A FATHER’S LESSON.
One day Robert's father sew him
playing with some boys who was rude
and unmannerly. lie lmd observed
for some time a change lor the worse
in his son, and now he saw the cause,
i/e was very sorry; but he said notli-
iug to Robert at the time.
In the eveniug he brought from the
S arden six -rosy checked apples, pul
icm on a plate, and present cd them
to Robert. lie was much pleased
with his father's kindness, and thank
ed him. “You must lay them aside
for a few days that they may become
mellow,’ 1 said the father, and Robert
cheerfully placed the plate with the
apples on ui lus mother's storeroom.
.lust ns lie was putting them aside,
his father laid on the plate a seventh
apple, which was quite rotten, and
desired him to' allow it to remain
there.
“Rut, father,” said Robert, “the rot
ten apple will spoil the others.”
“Do you think so? Why should not
the fresli apples rathcr«make the rotten
one fresh?” said his father. And with
these words he shut the door of the
room.
Eight days afterward, he asked his
sou to open the door and take out the
apples. Rut what a sight presented
itself! The six rosy cheeked apples
were now quite rottcn v and spread a
bad smell through the room. *
“Father 1” died be, “did I not tell
you that the rotten apple would* spoil
the good ones. You dul not llstcu to
me.”
“My boy,” said the father, “have 1
not told you often that the conipnuyof
bad children will make you bad, yet
you do not listen to me. tslee iu the
state of the apples that which will hap
pen to you if you keep iu bad company
with wicked boys.”
Robert did not forget the lesson.—
Wlieii any bad boys aske 1 him to
play with them, lie thought of the
apples, and kept himself apart from
them.
