During the past week we have had
several days ot beautiful weather. The
clear deep blue sky flocked with an
occasional cloud, as it drifted lazi'v
athwart the firmament; bright, worm
floods of sunshine, dispelling tbq cold
but vigorating air; whilst all nature,
after having been in laboi during the
spring and summer and brought forth
crops, fruits and buds, has ceased her
functions; and the stilluess which fn*
lows the harvest has come, broken or
ly by tho whirr of flo.de* of partridg:

Rev. E. H, McGcheo and family, left
last Wednesday morning for Hons ton
county, where his mother lives, and
whcrche will remain until after confer
ence till he learns whether he will come
back or not When we say that we
hope that the conference in their wise
direction may return him, we think
we express the universal sentiment of
not only the church, bfit of the entire
community. He has made us a good
Pastor, zealously performed his whole
duty, and greatly endeared himself
With the people. Of coarse the con
ference will kiiow their business and
duty, and do it, but we can’t see why
he should be removed. Wc think he
might do more next year even than
this on account of Iris knowledge of the
church and people, while it woujd he a
new starting with a new man. We
hope he may be returned, and we know
i he church could not .do better.
And while speaking of preachers being
removed, while there is nop robalrility
we suppose aud earnestly hope, ol him
being changed, we canuot pass
without a mention of our worthy pre
siding elder. Rev. J. M. Austin, who
has been so uutiringly faithful and
zealous in his ardious work this year,
nc has truly had a hard task, travel
ing a District of sonic 500 miles in
length, but we are glad to see he
stands it well, and always cheerfully.
We have never heard a complaint
against him, aud think as an elder be
is a success, and proved himself not
only equal to the task but worthy the
responsible trust imposed in him.
should hate for it to become necessary
in the arrangement of the conference
air.irs for him to be changed, and
>pc it may not ho so, for we should
be sorry to lose him aud his estimable
imily from our community.
Bressuanfo European House,
Among our new advertisements will
he found that of J. Bressimn’s Euro

have on account of a press of busiucss
failed to notice. We had heard much
of this house and had the pleasure un
der the guidance, of the popular and
clever host or going.through It, and
wc must say that we were surprised
at the extensive and complete arangc-
meuts, kept in such tidy, tasty manner,
more so than any thing of the kind
we have seen; and what is more sur
prising is the chapness of his fare, just
think only $1 50 a day for board and
lodging, aud that loo, as good as can
he had in the city. This it seems
would be a great convenience for
farmer and others who want to visit
thu city but many times can’t afford
to au account of the high price of
board in the city hotels. He has a
real nice place there, quiet and in best
order, where the most fastidious can
be pleased, iu every particular. We
are glad to see too that he. is being
well patronized and we hope it may
continue to be so and that the clever
host may grow rich and be happy.

THE HALL MYSTERY.
In our account last week of tho -dis
appearance of Mr. Juniper Hall, we
stated that the negroes had confessed
to having killed him, and subsequently
patting bip in the cypress swamp or
rather pond, just beyond the eight mile
post It seems that upon the parties
accompanying the self confessed mur
derers to the place they failed to find
the remains, and have failed to do so
up to the time of this writing; although
large bodies of citizens have hunter]
diligently ever since the fatal Tuesday
night, but Lave tailed to find a single
clue. The eutire party who accompa
nied Mr. H. to town have been arrest
ed and placed in jail, to await the un
raveling of this mysterious murder; for
murder it must have been beyond a
doubt, judging from all the tacts and
which may be briefly stated as follows:
The missing man was seen by two or
three responsible parties in company
with these negroes just before and after
dark traveling toward home together,
they were beard in loud aud angry al
tercation, Mr. II—. being considerably
under the influence of liquor. The
last seen of the missing man was at
the eight mile post where Mr. Robio-
son. Mr. Laney and some other gen
tlemen we recampiug for the night,be*
ing on their way to the fisheries. Mr.
Hall passed these gentlemen on Ids
mule, being sojne 30 or 40 yards be
hind the wagon. The negroes stopped
some three or tour hundred yards af
ter passing the camp and stayed
die gentlemen think, about two hours,
during which time they were very
noisy. They came back to the camp
twice, aud enquired if they (the camp
ers) had seen a white mnu pass. Tw
of the party were seen in this locality
under suspicious cicumstances next
morning. Mr. //all’s mules is found
at daylight the next morning, at Dr.
Copeland’s from whom it had bceu
purchased. The woods und entire
country leading to Dr. Copeland’s have
been thoroughly searched; so there ii
no probability of him having been
thrown and killed by his mule, for in
that event, the hundreds of anxious
citizens who have been scouring these
woods ever siuce, aided by the buz
zards, would certaiuly have fotiud
*he l>ody after the lapse of ten days
if it had been a&ore ground. The in
ference is plain and irresistable, that
Juniper Hall is concealed. We do not
rehearse these facts to prejudge, or
prejudice the public against the accu
sed, but there is an idea among some
that Mr. nail has not been murdered*
and this if not checked, may stop the
search, which is going on aud the body
may never be found, and consequently
the guilty parties never brought to
justice. This should not be tho case;
every citizen in Thomas county is in
terested in f errctin:f|out this dark mys
tery. It will soon come toihe point,
that whenever one of these fieuds,
finds a good and safe bole where he
can put a victim out of sight, that the
murderous work will be done.
Wc arc no advocates of extreme
measures, aud shall always counsel
moderation and a strict observance
of the laws of the laud, hut a citizen
of the county entitled to its protection,
should not he spirited away in the
manner in which Mr. Hall has been,
without some strenuous efforts bciug
made to find his remains. One or
two of the party have insisted that
the murdered man was put iu the
pond referred to after being killed;
u|j»n this information. Mr. David Hall
i brother of the missing man, togeth-
r with a large number of citizens,
have been, and are still engaged in
draining it; which owing to the large
volume of water is a slow pro
cess. They hope to find the remains
in this pond. We trust they msfy; but
the very fact of the negroes saying
that they put him there is evidence to
our mind that they did not. We sin
cerely trust that this painful mystery
may be cleared up, and the good name
of Thomas couuty. be relieved cf this
blot on her fair escutcheon. The mat
ter should be thoroughly investigated,
and if these parties have been unjust
ly suspected, turn them loose, but if
they have been guilty of this crime*
let justice be meted out to them hy
the proper tribunal of tho land.
The meeting of the Stockhold
ers on Last Saturday.
We join heartily with our cotempo
rary in congratulating the citizens of
Thomasviile, of Thcmas county, ami
o! South West Georgia, on the action
of the above body on last Saturday.
It was just such action as might
have been looked for and expected, on
the part of the intelligent aud public
spirited geutietnen, who participated
in the meeting. The deficit was
promptly provided for, by oue of the
public spirited Stockholders and Di
rectors, agreeing to advauce the nec
essary amount. Wc should tike to
give this gentleman’s name to the pub
lic, but as “ true merit is always mod
est,” he declines the use of his name.
The rest lotion of the Stockholders
instructing the President, Col. A.
Wright, to make all uectasary and
preliminary arrangements, for the
Fifth Grand Annual Exhibition, has
the ’ring of the true metal about it
These gentlemen know no such won*
as foil; with them, to will is to do; and
wherever you see a spirit ot that kind
pervading an} - body of men, success
will attend their efforts, and victory
will perclron their banners. Let Ex
celsior be their motto, coupled with
determination on the part of all to sus
tain the institation, and it is bound to
grow in importance and magnitude, as
each successive year sees the bone and
sinew of the country gathered togeth
er in our beautiful grouuds, to inter
change ideas, and compare the results
of the years labor.
Again we congratulate our citizens
on the fact of the Association bein^
placed on a firmer basis than it has
ever been before. We here take occa
sion to say to our fhends in sur
rounding counties, that white Thomas
takes a peculiar prido in sustaining
