Siegel Snook*.
AVfcßl MOCKNI I I. «»I,UB CONCERNTNfI A r.AWTF.R
OF THAT ILK.
Ia bis dark den ant lawyer Snooks,
Great piles of script around him grew;
His table held as many hooks
As was a table able to.
Tor Siegel (such the name he liorc)
Was learned in law and equity ;
Full many a baffled lawyer swore
At Siegel’s eagle legal eye.
His brow was stern ; bis lip was sad :
Ami twixt his eyes a nose arose ;
But if the Jewish shape it had,
Or Oteek or Roman, no man knows.
(’Twas nil three, and I guess aright,)
A foe to all the w orld was he ;
And like some Demon of the Night,
At men ho leveled deviltry.
For ruined homes, dishonor’d biers,
Or groans, or curses, naught oared be ;
He would have drowned the world in tears ?
So he might ‘get a little feed
Hu wipes tils pen—looks up--with fright
Ho starts, for bursting on his viow,
Stood near his desk u lady bright;
Sure never brighter, writer knew.
Her fueo so fair, so purely grand,
Were tberno to write a sunset on ;
Sho wore a sea-green bonnet, ar.d
Upon the bonnet honitoti 1
lie rose and placed his client’s chair,
Then sought ‘her wish ?’ in accents grave ;
She smiled her thanks, and asked, ‘if e'er
Unpaid to lady aid he gave?’
His brow black. ‘Without the cash
My poverty forbids, you see ;
E’en virtue whispers, ‘Work wore rash
Without you get a lilllo fee.”
Sho smiled: A kiss I bring for fco !
I laugh at lies —your tale is such,
You poor? Ydu can’t impose on mo I
Nor will your virtu* hurt you much 1‘
‘Sol an attempt upon tnino honor;
That, Ma’am, ‘twero host you do not try.’
lie stood, and scowling, glared upon hor
With his b-iglit, ragle, legal eye.
‘Thcro let my tears'— ‘Nay, gold’s tlio key
That fits my lock on heart and brain ;
Who have it not, and hope to seo
The easket open, hopo in vain.’
‘Yet hear: a maid of kin bereft
Implores then on her bended knee.
Hast thou no spark of pity left?
As Ihou'rt a man, Sir, answer me !’
‘N"tone !’ ‘And hop’st thou Ileav’n to spy ?’
‘k’oarboys with bugs! ’tin sai l,’ sneered he.
'Satan’s tlio lawyer's sire, so T
Would with my father rather he.’
Then clmngod, l trow, that lady’s hue
To foul and loathsomo hue of death 1
A ghastly thing, above, sbo grew !
A nameless wonder, undornentb 1
llluo blnses lit tho murky gloom !
Sho pressed bis lips ; he shrieked nguin !
Sho wound him in Itor arms! tlio room
Began to founder round her thou 1
They sank ! while loud, infernal mirth
And fiendish laughter pealed on high ;
And never more was soon on earth
l’oor Siegel’s engal legal eye.

A My sterions Masquerader.
A rather amusing scan* occurred at a certain
masquerade party lost Monday night. It ap
pears that when tha merry throng of fancifully
costumed revelers entered the! dwelling, a mys
terious looking stranger, closely masked, step
ped inside tho door and mingled in tha festiv
ities of tho evening. lie had ostensibly as
sumed tho part of a negro, and so true was ho
to nature, in mien, gesture and smell, that
grave suspicions were soon aroused as to
w hether ha was not really an American citizen
of African descent. When tlio time for un
masking arrived, the stranger very determin
edly refused to raise the piece of pasteboard
that concealed his vissago from the gaze of the
crowd, whose curiosity had by this time b*-
oome terribly e-.cited. The mask w»s at last
torn from his face, however, when, to the in
describable astonishment of all present, the
delicate features of an unmistakable sou of
Ham were revealed. It is almost needless to
say that ho wa seized simultaneously by the
collar and seat of his unmentionables, passed
to the door and ignmniniously thrust into the
street. But even those into whose company
he had so unceremoniously thrust himself,
were compelled to admit that lie played his
port to tho life. —XashiuUc /fanner.

Kar.v years ago, tko writer cf theso lines and an invalid physician, while visiting the
Island of St. Crois for their health, experienced and witnessed many surprising and
beneficial effects of the Sum there produced upon many cf the invalids who were (like
ourselves) seeking health ; and, upon inquiry and investigation, obtained a full history
cf its medicinal virtues. Ho was delighted and surprised, and after his own recovery,
which soon occurred, determined, if possible, to procure the solo right to manufacture
and sell it in the United States.
The result of his labors was a glorious success for himself and suffering humanity,
for the celebrated PLANTATION SITTEES was thus made known to the world. fLAU
TATIQN BITTESS being an article of real merit, founded upon new principles, and
relying wholly upon the vegetable world for its medicinal effects, worked a rapid revolu
tion in the history cf medicine, and became as a household word all over the civilized
world. The cabalistic S. T.—l£6C—S. was a talisman cf health, and the demand for
the FLATTA7ICN EITTEP.S soon far esoceicd the abilities of the proprietors to supply.
hfcvwithstanding the large importation of St. Crois hum, made espressiy for the com
pounding of these Sitters, the quantity was inadequate. It therefore became necessary
that arrangements upen an estensive scale abroad should at once bo made, and an agent
was dispatched to St. Thomas 'for that purpose. He was fortunate in securing and
leasing several plantations on seme of the largest and most productive estates on the
island. Houses, stills and presses were erected as if by magic, which utterly “ aston
ished the natives.” The cerwlses of enperienced men and natives of the island were pro
cured, and very stcu the proprietors of the PLANTATION BITTERS were in a position
to supply their laboratory v. ich all the porfeot'y pure Sc. Cross Rum needed in mamufac
turing-ths 3REA7 STSPEPTIC TONIC AFT A.vIGOhATOh. The above cut represents
the natives crushing the sugar-oar, o and otherwise preparing it for the stills and presses.
jAs an an-fV.e to Fever and Ague, Intermittent and Halarlous Fevers, Syspepsia, and
other kindred diseases, the use cf the PLANTATION BITTERS is unsurpassed in tho
history of the world. Over five niiiim boiilw are ditg-sed of annually. They are
adapted te old and young, male and : - They are atTOcablo in tacts, and always
