Goodwin, a gentleman of this State, who went to California last spring to mend his broken fortunes, writes back the following letter : “If those restless, dissatisfied persons who think that every other place is better than home, would take the advice of many who have learned by experience, they would remain where they are. It cannot be dented that al most every new country, especially California, possesses many advantages over the older States, and presents many alluring induce ments to the young and energetic ; but tell all who contemplate leaving home and its hallow ed associations, to remember that “distance lends enchantment to the view,' 1 and that in most instances it is better to endure temporary inconveniences and reverses of fortune than “fly to ills they know not of.'’ The majority of those who have left the South to seek for tunes in Brazil, Mexico or the Western wiids, have experienced sad and bitter disappoint ments. Fruitless enterprises, dissipation, ruined health, and perished hopes have resulted from following the wares of excitement which have so long lashed the Pacific slope.” Manv years ago the writer of this notice and an invalid physician, while visiting the Island of Sk Croix for their health, experienced and witnessed many surprising and beneficial offeGis of the Rum there produced upon many of the invalids who wete, like ourselves, seek ing health, and upon inquiry and investigation, obtained a full history of its medicinal lirtues. was delighted and surprised, and determin ed to make it the basis of a Tunic and llestora tire Medicine. The result of his labors was a glorious success for himself and suffering hu manity. The celebrated Plantation Bitters was thus made knowtf to the world.
