The Mystery ot Nature.
The work* of Ood are fair for naught,
Unles. ou, ever, in seeing,
See hidden in the thing the thought
That animates its being.
The outtrnrd form it not the whole,
Os every part is moulded
To imago forth an inward soul,
That dimly is unfolded.
The shadow, pictured in the lake
By every tree that trembles,
Is cast for more than just the sake
Os that which it resembles.
The dew falls nightly, not alone
Because the meadows need it,
But on an errand of its own,
To human souls that heed it.
The stars are lighted in tho skies,
Not merely for their shining,
But, like the looks of loving eyes,
I/avs meanings worth divining.
Tho wftes that moan along the shore,
The winds that sigh in blowing,
Are sent to tench a mystic loro
Which men are wiso in knowing.
The clouds around the mountain peak,
The rivers )n their winding,
Ilnvo secrets, which to nil who seek,
Aro secrots in the finding.
Thus Nature dwells within our reach,
But though wo stand so near hor,
Wo will interpret half her speech
With ears too dull to hear her.
Whoever, at thccoarscst sound,
Still listens to the finest,
Bhall hear tho noisy world go round
To music the divinest.
Whoever yearns to see aright
Because his hoart is tender,
Shall catch ft glimpso of heavonly light
In every earthly splendor.
So, sinoo the universo began,
And till it shnll be ended,
The soul of nature, soul of man,
And soul of Ood nro blendod 1
A Model I.nwjrcr.
“Squire Johnson” was a model Inwyor, as
tho following anecdote will show :
Mr. Jonos.once rushed into tho Squiro's
offico in a great passion. “That infernal
scoundrel of a cobbler,Smith, has sued me, Mr.
Johnson—sued mo for (ivo dollars I owe him
for n pair of boots.”
“Then you owe him the five dollars?"
“To be sure I do ; but he’s gone and uuod
mo—sued me I”
“Then why don't you pay him if you owe
him ?”
“Bccauso lie's sued me ; and when a man
does that, I'll never pny him till it costs him
something more than ho gets. I want you to
make it cost him all you can."
“But it will cost you something too I”
“I don’t care forthnt, What do yon charge
to begin with ?”
“Ten dollars ; and ntoro if thoro is extra
trouble.”
“All right 1 There's the X. Now go
ahead I”
No sooner was his client gone than Squiro
Johnson stepped across to his neighbor Smith,
ajid offered to pay tho bill on condition that
the suit should ho withdrawn. The shoema
ker gladly acceded—all he wanted was his
Bay. The lawyer retained tho other five for
his fee ; and as tho easo was not ‘trouhlesomo’
made no farther demand upon his client.
Ten days after Jones came in to see how
hi* case was getting on.
“All right!” said tho lawyer. “You won’t
have any trouble njmut that. I put it to
Sinjth so strongly that ha was glad to with
draw the suit altogether.”
“Capital!” cried tho exulting Jones. "You
havo done it up brown 1 You shall hnvo
all my business.”
Changes In Thirteen Years.
In 1855, Mr. Buchanan wns Minister to
Knglnad. Captain George B. McClellan was
letailod on secret sorvit-o to the harbor of Cu
ba, under instructions from tho Secretary of
War. General Quitman. Lieutenant Beaure
gard am! others were plotting fillibustering
ends against five island, for which the Govern
ment soon after made an offer of $100,000,000.
Parson Btownlow had written a savage work
in defense of slavery, and wns challenging
Northern clergymen to dispute its divine au
thority. Gerritt Smith, 1 >r. Ilowe, Henry
Ward Beecher, and a few hundred others were
doing • qttiot and limited business in*tlie un
derground railway. John Brown had not yst
left bis farm in tbo northern wilds. An ob
scure individual, remembered by a few as hav
ing on pc Represented Sangamon District, Illi
nois, in the House, and opposed tho Mexican
war in an awkward, diaingonious and ex
tremely unpopular argument, received a few
complimentary votes fur Ylce-l’rosident, in
competition with Mr. Drayton, tho nominee.
Captaiu U. S. Grant, hardly suspected of be
ing an exafray officer by those who bought
molasses or cordwood of him, was generally
taken for a steamboat captain, temporarily
stranded by a stress of ill lock, or who hardly
had the energy and pluck to succeed in any
business calling, and therefore collapsed into
a speculator in sundries. W. T. Sherman
wns teaching in Louisiana. General Sioklos,
Butlor -and Logan were rough-and-tumble
Democratic lawyers of some notoriety. Two
of the most prominent and promising officers
of our little army were Colonel Albert Sidney
Johnson and Lieutenant Colonel Robert E.
Lee.

T. C. Howard, Esq., of Darien Ga., writftsa#
follows:
“It is proper Mint I ?h.«uM say the results of the
use of y. ur fertilizer have been very marked
nnd indeed surprising. I have made more cotton
by :t» aid on worn out laud, that has been in
cultivation in two years past, than I lave been
able to do on the best swamp or bottom land on
ray [lace in Mississippi.”

V rs. P. P. IV w .v< : e., Atlanta : I applied
the two ton* ol Rhodes’Super-Phosphate, which
you furnished me last \ ear, at the rate of 400
pounds to the aero, c i tLin land, considerably
exhausted by continued cultivation, without
manure, an* l have m. hesii ation in saving that it
ua« c.\ •<*'V-iit fertilizer for cotton. On the
eight acres to which 1 applied it, I picked up
wards of SOdO pounds tis seed cotton —more than
double what the land would have produced
without the fertilizer. It is also proper to men-,
tion, that while the caterpillars stripped all the
leaves and young bolls off an adjoining patch,
manured with Dickson’s Mixture, commencing
their ravages in Auj.nd, they did net attack that
manured with Rhodes’Super-Phosphate until the
first week in October. Wm. M. Browne.
Thousands of certificates and letters ceuld be
published, showing the value of Rhodes’ “Stand
ard,’* a quick and permanent fertilizer.
