Our fellow townsman, Mr. W. C. Worrill, has been appointed Railroad Agent at Thom son, vice Mr. W. J. Steed, resigned. Quite strring revivals of religion are in progress at both the Methodist and Baptist churches in Thomson. More interest is man ifested than we have seen for years. Over fortv have joined the two churches. We are pleased to note this, and hope the good work will continue. Fall and Winter Dry Goods. Merchants and others will save money by noticing the announcement of P. & M. Gatla her, of 190 Broad Street, Augusta, befo e they purchase their Fall and Winter supplies of goods in their line. Their stork will afford something to suit every variety of taste. Fleming & Staples. Persons having business in Augusta or send ing Cotton to that market will do well to call . n this New Firm, as these gentlemen are prepared to serve the public on most favorable terms, and can store cotton or other consign ments in their fire-proof warehouse. See their advertisement. Metal Tipped Shoes. Shoes are an important item in the expense of clothing children, ns every parent will un derstand. They invariably wear out thoir shoes at the toe first, and not unfiequeutly before the other parts are a quarter worn.— Child-en’s shoes with Metal l ips never wear out at the toe, and it is safe to say that on an average one pair with them will more than out wear three pairs without them. \\ e believe all the shoe dealers keep them .—Riston JJa ald. A Mr. Coningsby is writing tn the London Spectator on the American working clashes, and among other tilings says that when he was a stranger in America it seemed queer to him >• to be parasolsspiktsd out of a seat in a street car by an elegant young lady, wboonly vouch safed ihe explanation that she would ‘sit right it ere.’ ” The Chronicle & Sentinel. With pleasure wo received tins Augusta Daily enlarged and improved. The prosperi ty indicated by tbis improvement is not only cheering to the profession, but it shows a healthy condition of the publi, ml, as well ns increased pecuniary ability to patronize publications devoted to the interests id the jiapple. May this old veteran of the Georgia | press long enjoy popular favor. The Constitution. Notwithstanding the contumely heaped by politicians upon the original Constitution o our land, we are glad to see the Atlanta Con stitution enlarged ami otherwise indicating a liberal patronago. The energy and ability with which this sprightly Ilemocratic Daily is edited have already secured it a position among the leading papers of the country, while its devotion to the best interests of the people has secured for it a popularity which many older journals might covet. The Rural Carolinian. The first cumber of a very complete agri cultural monthly under this title has reached us. It is edited by D. H. Jacques, Esq., and published by Walker, Evans & Cogswell, Charleston, S. C. It is well gotten up and deserves a liberal patronage. Ibe present Dumber contains 04 large double column pages with wood cut illustrations. Terms $2,00 a year in advance. Fire Proof Storage. We call particular attention to the adver tisement in another column, of W. 11. How ard & Son, Cotton Factors and Commission Merchants, Augusta. This firm is entitled to t|e honor of being the first to cotne out against tie combination on the part of the Coinmis stin merchants of Augusta to raise the price fir selling cotton to 24 per cent. They promptly announced that they would continue tq sell at the old rate of lj per cent. Sustain them. Onr Literature. If our people knew the many good things evyry month published in the “XIX Century ; if thev fully appreciated the fact that this ' f-'iitlfcrn Magazine, with Ex-Gov. Perry, Win. -Gimore Simms, Rev. Dr. Ilicks, and others, fo| contributors, is equal to the best of North- W« Monthlies ; iT they realized that it is in jtielf a “circulating library ‘ of choice litera itute, cheap at $3.50 a year, they would, like ourselves, welcome it to their homes and fire sides. The October number is before us, full %s usual of entertainment. The XIX Century may be had at the Book fetare of John R Davis, in Covington. I dan it he possible that over Five Million hojtlcs of Plantation Ritters have been sold during the past year? It is almost incredi ble, nevertheless it is absolutely true, and is the most convincing proof of their wonderful \ medicinal and health -restoring qualities. Eve- j ry iatnily should be supplied with these Bit tertj. at whatever cost or tremble it may be to obrpn them. Be careful that you get the ger.jiine, and that you aie not imposed upon bv i spurious article. _ _ Mir.NOT.T v Water Superior to the best tfcpmeil German Cologne! and sold at half tun price. .*■•l , Sumter Bitters. This new T >nie has been introduced in Cov | ingfon by Messrs. Bowler & Harris, who have i the agency for its sale at this place. When we have soon their effect we shall be better prepared to speak of their merits. The Blessiug ol’tlie Age. No more Sick Headache, no more Dyspepsia, no more Indigestion, no more Piles, no more Chills, no more Liver Complaint, no mure Kid ney Disease, no more Costiveness, no more Heartburn, TUTT’S VEGETABLE LIVER PILL is a certain guarantee against ail these distressing comp'aints. Negro Mechanics.—A Washington dispatch says: The various trades unions here are adopting new constitutions, which prohib's negro mechanics from having membership.— The carpenters took such action last night. Honesty is not only the best policy, but the highest wisdom. However difficult it may he for integrity to get on, it is a thousand times more difficult for knavery to get off. -♦•ae-. SltacLE vs. Gold, —The notorious John Morrissey, an acknowledged gambler and ex pugilist, lost $83,000 in the recent panic at New York. The equally notorious James Fisk. Queer.— A Now York merchant has de posited SIO,OOO in a Lynchburg, Ya., bank for safe keeping. He cannot trust the pre cious metal tn Gotham. It is the surest angury of sues cess. If the recent reports as to Federal inter vention again.- : Dent in Mississippi and Hamil ton in Texas ho true, both these States may be set down as sure to go against tbo admin istiaii n and the Radicals. “So mote it be!’’ It is state I, on English authority, that over thirteen hundred thousand Hindoos and three hundred th- u-nnd Egyptians hive perished within tbela-t five years from starvation, con sequent upon the forced cultivation til eolton instead of bread. Boats and si if taken care of properly, j wiii usually last two or three times longer j thrisi thev usually do, nod, at the same time, lit the iect far more sansfuetnrilv, and keep time dry and more comfortable in wot and cold weather. The upper leather should be kept soft and pliable, while the soles need to be hard, though, impervious to water. The first tiling to be done w ith any pair of new shoes for farm use. is to set each one on a platter or an old diiiner'plate, and iri boiled linseed ml, sufficient to HU tho vessel to the upper edge of the soles. Allotv tho leather to absorb as much oil as it will for eight hoots. Lm-ectl oil h mid not be applied to upper leather, as it will soon become dry. rendering the leather bard and tough. But if the soles be saturated with tbis oil, it will ex clude the dampness, and enlarge the pegs, so that the so'es will never get loose from the upper leather- If the shoes be sewed, the linseed oil will preserve the thread from rot ting. Now, wet the uppier leather thoroughly when the boots or shoes are to be put on the feet, so that those parts which are tight may render a trifle, and thus adapt the form of tho shoe to the foot far more satisfactorily than when the upper leather is not wet. Keep them on the feet until the leather is nearly dry. Then give 'he upper leather a thorough greasing w ith tallow and neat’s-foot oil. If shoes be treated in this manner, and a row of round-headed shoe nails be driven around 1 the edge of the soles, they will wear like copper, and always set easy to the feet. Roots and shoes should be treated as suggested, and worn a little several months before they are put to daily service. This is the true way to save your shoe money.—[Hearth and Horne. GEORGIA.
