Tho codfish is a child ov tho oihun. This ackounts for their being so salt. They are caught with a hook and lino, and bite like a steel-trap, and bang on like a poor relation. They are good eating for a wet day; they are better than an umbroller to keep a man dry. Dried codfish iz one ov the luxuries of life, but codfish three times a day would weaken my confidence in them. Codfish never venture in fresh water; they would spile if they did. I never hnvo been nodfishing myself, hut think I should like it better than fishing for frog*. I think I could catch frogs well enulT, but I should insist upon their taking tbemsolros off from tho hook. I had rather take a boss bumble-bee in mi hand than a live frog, not because I am afraid the frog would bite, but I am afruid of their kicking. ?omo people ain't afrnid to take dfinything with their hands, that they kan reach, not even an eel. hut if I should over git caught by an eel, if I couldn’t settle with him, right off, by giving him tho hook and line, I would throw the pole into the bargain and put for home. The codfish is said to he an aristokrat, and to k#p aloof from other fish of his size in the sea, and claims tew he a relation of tho whale, but this looks to ma rather fishy. I her noticed that the codfish nlwus lias a stiff upper lip, hut I think this is more owing tew the hone that iz in him than it is tew his blood. THE UACKREL. Tho maekrel iz a gamo fish, They ought tew be well educutcd, for they are nlwus in sohools. They nro very ensy to bite, and arc caught with a piece ov cld rod flannel pottycoat tied onto a hook. • They ain’t tho only kind of fish caught by the same kind of bait. Maekrel inhabit tho son, but those which inhabit the grooerys nlwus tasto tow me ns though they had been horn and fattoned on nothin but salt. They want n good doal of freshening before they are eaten, and want a good deal of fresh ening afterward. If I can hav plenty of maekrel for breakfast, I can generally make tho ether two meals out ov cold water. Maekrel are considered by monny folks the best fish that swims, and are called “the salt of tho earth.” Nothing on earth can smile hut human be ings. Gems may flash reflected light, hut what ie a diamond flash compared with an eye-flash and mirth flash? A face thnt cannot emile is liko a hud that cannot blossom, and Aries up on the stalk. Laughter is day, sobri ety is night, and a smile is tho twilight that hoTcrs gently between both, and is more bo witching than either. In whatever you engage, pursue it with a steadiness of purpose, as though you were de termined to success. A wavering mind never accomplished anything worth naming. There i* nothing liko a fixed, sfendy nim. It digni fies your nature and insures you success. “The blessed man that preached for us last Sunday,” said Mrs. Partington, “served the Lord for thirty years—first as a circus-rider, then as a locust preacher, and last as an ex hauster.” The only wny to be n gentleman, is to have tlte feelings of one; to be elevated above others iu sentiment rather than situation, and lo let the benevolence of tho heart be mani fested in the general courtesy nnd affability of the demeanor. [OFFICIAL.] EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT, I Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 16,1860. | TO THE SHERIFF OR HIS LAWFUL DEPUTY OF 8188 COUNTY. Whereas, At the May Term, A. D., 1869, of the Superior Court held in and for the county of Bibb, Henrietta Greer was tried for and con victed of the crime of murder, and was there for sentenced by the Judge presiding at said Court, to be hanged by the neck until dead, on the 23d day of July thereafter; and Whereas, The said Henrietta Greer has been reprieved until the 17th day of September, in stant, upon the representation of her attorney and other respectable citizens, and to the ond that tho testimony, facts, and circumstances produced upon her trial, might receire a thor ough and careful investigation ; and Whereas, Upon examination of the record in said case, it appears that the testimony against tho condemned was wholly circumstantial, and that her conviction was founded upon her own confessions, which confessions, when taken together, arc contradictory, nnd evince the in fluence of fear, and mental imbecility ; and Whereas, The perfect social intimacy of the condemned with the deceased precludes the probability of any malice aforethought, and raised a strong that the blows which resulted in death were struck in the heat of passion ; and Wh creas, It hns been made known to me, that the condemned was brought to trial when the public mind was much uxcited, and the pressure of public opinion for oonviction was great, and in addition to the fact that the coun sel appointed to defend tho said Henrietta Greer, at the time of her trial, is said to have been young nnd inexperienced, and failed to present the evidence in its proper light to tho jury : Now, therefore, in consideration of the facts nnd circumstances aforesaid, and to the end that impartial justice may be done, I, Rufus B.
