Bright well and J. R. Porter, Maxey's: M. G. Broome and O, A. McLaughlin, Union Point; Dr. S X Gresham, Greensboro ; Wallace Lampkin.Athens- SI. Jordan, Augusta. ®T All advertisements in the local column will be charged SO per cent upon the published rates.. front this date. We are now prepared to furnish all kinds of le gal blanks, bill and letter-heads, at the very lowest rates. Ocs Jon Depabtment. —Having supplied our selves with a large stock of'fine paper, we are now enabled to furnish the public with Job Work promptly and cheaply, and executed in the best style. The McDuffie Jout.xal is the official organ of McDuffie county, and is the only papeb published in the county. The Weather. —Tire weather for the past week , has been intensely cold and disagreeable, being in- 1 terapersed w ith rain, sleet and snow. Guano. —Gup.no is beginning to arrive at the de- 1 pot, and from what we have been able to learn, large quantities will be used the present year by our farmers. Ofr Schools.. Mr. X, A. Lewis has opened his ‘ school at “Greenway Academy” under flattering auspices. Mr. Thomas M. Steed has also opened at the “ Thomson High School Academy” under very fa vorable circumstances. Mr. R. H. Pearces select school is in fair oper ation at his private residence. Miss E. B. Richards is teaching a very interest ing school at Mrs. J. C. Richard’s millinery store. We direct especial attention to the Guano adver tisements in this issue, of Messrs. Sibley & Son, Augusta. Ga. These excellent, fertilizers have been tried, and hence need no recommendation that we could give. Mr. J. H. Stockton, our ener getic townsman, lias the agency for the sale of th. se Guanos, and would bo pleased to fill orders for liis planting friends. Give him a call. Bonham’s Entertainments. —On last Friday and Saturday nights Prof. Bonham gave two of his splendid entertainments at the Town Hall, which "ere exceedingly interesting, mid highly apprecia ted by onr people. His exhibitions are refined, el evating and instructive, and are really models of their kind. Mr. Bonham's talents as a comedian, delineator, balladist and elocutionist are very sel dom excelled. We commend him to the public, , with the assurance that his entertainments are well of liberal patronage. Picayune. —A subscription list was going the rounds scune time since with a number of our citi zens’ names attached, for the purpose of petition ing the O Railroad Company to run the Pic (Nyune to this place. We are satisfied that an ar rangement of this kind could be easily made with the Company, and if effected, would not only prove a great convenience to our people visiting Augusta, i but would be of real interest to our town. I; ; would be an inducement for business men in An- j gusta to settle with us—especially in the summer-1 season—thereby enhancing the value of our prop erty, and at the same time building up our town. ! We trust our citizens will push forward the matter. Fire Engine. —We most earnestly urge upon our citizens the importance and necessity of early pur chasing a fire engine for our town. It is well known that our town is built up entirely of wooden buildings, and owing to their proximity to each other, should a fire break out in any one of the business houses on Main street, there w ould be no possible chance of saving anything—neither houses nor goods. Notwithstanding insurance companies have pos itively refused to insure any further, owing to the great risk to be run, yet many of our business men who have nearly all the property they possess in vested in store-houses and articles of merchandize, remain perfectly quiet and inert upon the subject, as if a fire in Thomson would be an impossibility. Some of our business men have no insurance upon their property at all, and the probabilities are good that, they will not have soon under present circum stances. From many quarters we hear the sad in telligence of destructive fires. Only a few days ago our sister town, Warren ton, sustained a heavy loss by fire. We urge that it is time for our people to be wide awake upon this subject. A small contribution from each of our merchants and business men would raise a sum adequate to the purchase of a good engine. We have plenty of young men that would willingly organize themselves into a fire company, if an engine could be secured. We of fer the suggestion because we honestly think it a timely one. Now, who will be the first to get up a subscription list to buy an engine ? Remember that “a stitch in time saves nine.” The Atlanta Sun for 1872. Alexander IL Stephens, Political Editor. J. Henly Smith, General Editor and Business Manager. During the present year a President and mem bers of Congress are to be elected. Liberty must be preserved or lost. The Corrup tionists of the day—the Bond Rings—the ambi tious enemies of free government—are artfully, persistently paving the way to the overthrow of the I Federal Republic, founded by Washington, Jeffer son and Madison, and the establishment of a Cen tralized Empire and a Dynasty in its stead. The people can prevent this if they will. They ; can retain their freedom, or they can become j slaves. The destiny of this country is to be deci ded by the people’s votes ! If the Democratic party will but stand firmly upon its time-honored platform, and erect the standard of Liberty and honesty in the adminis tration of the government, a glorious triumph will be achieved. Victory is within our grasp. The enemy is giving way —is receding from his utter disregard of law and constitutional guaranties.— Now is the time for a vigorous charge upon his wavering lines. The Sun has been sowing the good seed of truth, it has already brought forth good fruit. We shall continue to sow the seed, and shall expect a rich harvest to be reaped in the triumph of honest principles in the next election. trust our patrons will aid us in extending the' circulation of the Sun. We have entered upon our enterprise to assist in the great work of re ' deeming the country from the control of robbers, tyrants and money-changers, who are infesting the temple of Liberty. Their tables must be ovei tnrned. and public opinion must scourge them from the public presence. \'e shall give all the news from the State Capi tal proceedings of the Legislature—decisions of the Supreme Court, and all important news and events connected with the State Government; and shall endeavor to make the Sun a welcome family visitor. Hon. Alexander H. Stephens, the Editor-in- Chief, has specially arranged his business so as to devote almost his entire time to the political de partment >f the Sun. during the coming spring and summer, and to the end of the Presidential election. , Forms for the Daily, $lO per annum: six months : one month, sl. The idea that invalids weakened by disease can be relieved by prostrating them with destructive drugs, is no longer enter tained except by monomaniacs. Ever since the introduction of Dr. Walker’s Vinegar Bitters it has been obvious that their regulating and invig orating properties are all-sufficient for the cure of chronic indigestion, rheumatism, constipation, di arrhoea, nervous affections, and malarious fevers, and they are now the standard remedy for these j complaint**~in every section of the Union. f>w4 j Caution —The merits of the Soluble ; Pacific Guano, manufactured by the Pacific Gua lno Company, having been attested by so great a ! number of our planters, who have used it for the past seven years, its superior excellence is no longer a matter of doubt: and as spurious articles of the same name are being offered for sale, 1 take this method of informing the public that none is genu ine unless branded on the sacks, “John S.
