Wilson, is raising a handsome residence near the Methodist Church. ) hotnson slid grows. c-iT We ask the continued aid of our friends in speaking such words for this paper as its merits deserve, thus aiding u* in extending its circula tion. ids' If you want to live two years in one, and bo happy as the days are long, just subscribe for the Jocesal. It carries knowledge and happiness into hundreds of families. PIT An lowa exchange says “Spring incoming.” It may be, but it is careful about making any signs of that approach. It is coy—tho horse that drags its car must be low in flesh. C,r Did it ever occur to the reader to ask him self where he will l>o a hundred years from now ? Bet him try for a moment to grasp that thought, and then tell us if ho can, what he is butting at so frantically here. ifiT No man in business should over write a busines letter without his card printed at the top of the sheet of paper. It is an advertisement, prevents mistakes and looks like business. CiT Oa last Monday the stro-t ia front of the depot was literally blocked up will) wagons, bearing away .guano freight. We don’t claim to be ii -ers but we predict (hat guano bills will 1)8 mighty hard to pay next fail. C3" An exchange says that some young men marry for dimples, sine ears, soma nose; the contest, however, generally lies between the eyes and hair. The mouth, too, is occasionally mar ried, the chin is not so often. We opine that it seldom happens that ho doesn’t get more MOUTH and CHIN than ha bargained for when the con tract was first made out. i£iT The Warrcnton Clipper of the 14th inst., rays : The sermon delivered by Rev. A. I Hartley, at the Methodist Chu eh, on Sunday last, was a clear, logical exposition of the text: “Wo, to them that are at ease ’ll Zion.” Wc noticed among the most attentive of tl>» congregation several persons not habituated to attending Divine Worship. -«-» Blast Shade Tbees. —Let every one in Thomson make calculations now to set out shade trees this spring. Many have already done so in the past, and now let all who have neglected the duty, do it this year. It will enhance the value of your lots many times the cost in a very few years, as well as to improve the appearance of your home, add beauty to onr town, and show that we are a cultivated and enteprising people. Plant shade trees this spring. Wiit is it?—Can any of onr cotemporaries tell us why is it that the Radical papers published in Geor gia, do not give the name of the editor in their col umns ? We belive with only two exceptions the names of the editors of all the Radical papers that have been published in this State, have not appeared in their columns. Are the editors of these papers ashamed of the bad odor that will attach to them a few years hence if too many should know that they once held such enviable positions ? Oca Town Council. —Mnoh credit is due the new town Council for the faithful performance of their duties and the strict and rigid enforcement of the ordinances. Several offenders have recently been arraigned beloro the Board, and were com pelled to pay reasonable admission fees. Hereafter we intend to give the regular proceedings of the Court a- A while we cannot promise our readers to intersperse our reports with as much wit and poetry as Moore, of the Atlanta Hat), yet we shall at least try to keep them posted with the “modus oper mdi’ of the Honorable Court. Monumental Dedication.— The Monumental Slab, or Record of the Confederate dead of Colum bia county, was dedicated at Appling, on Thursday last, the 11th inst. The ceremonies ou the occa sion wore conducted by the Rev. Air. Florence and Dr. 11. R. Casey. The Monument was erected in ■ho Court House, and contains the names of all tho soldiers from Columbia county who fell battling for the‘‘Lest Crf .’ The following companies with the numbers of their killed, were represented on the Slab; Thomson Guards, —killed, 50. Ramsey Volunteers—killed, 35. Oglethorpe Infantry—killed, 10. Hamilton Rangers —killed, t* Jennings Rangers- killed, 0. Craw ford Rangers—killed, 10. McDuffie Rifles—killed, 1. Milledgo Artillery—killed, 1. AValkcr Light Infantry—killed, 1. Gcu. John Morgan’s Command—killed, 2. State Troops—killed, 7. Unknown Commands—killed, 0. The speech of Dr. Casey was a model of elo quence, and abounded in patriotic so; dim cuts strikingly appropriate to the occasion, lie en couraged and applauded the raising of monuments to perpetuate tho mem >ry of tho i o' to do id, not f r tile purpose of perpetuating national strife, but that tho recollection of our gallant dead may ever remain green in our memories, and he handed down to tho generations that arc to follow after ns as an heritage everlasting in the good name anil fame of the noble, tho gallant souls who immolated themselves upon the altar of their country's liberty. The Doctor briefly reviewed Radical legislation and the many wrongs that have been practiced upon nu over-burdened and oppressed tax-paying people since the cessation of hostilities. 110 ex horted all to be submissive to the laws, and to await patiently the coming of onr deli veranee from Radical thralldom. IVlio Was Grant I Senator Wilson, in an elaborate speech at Groat Falls, N. IL, has un ilertaken to answer this question. lie said : When tho war opened he was earn ing a few hundred dollars a year tanning leather out in Galena, lie offered his services to the nation, and they were not accepted. He went down to .Spring field, and served there for some weeks, helping to enroll and organize the regi ments, they were raising in Illinois. Fi nally they gave him a regiment. He had not money enough to buy a sword with which to light the battles of 'his country, nor a horse to ride. You did not know anything about him ; few had heard of him. In that statement is there not such suppression as is a suggestion of false hood ? He was educated and graduated at West Point. Why did he leave the army? Does not the Senator know? And having left it, why was his social and pecuniary condition so low ? Why could a young man infirm health, with the advantages given by the best educa tion the nation alfordod at West Point, not ascend above ‘a few hundred dollars a year tanning leather in Galena’ ? Was the Senator honest with his audience '/ llow and why did it happen that this young army ofiicer was in fact a de pends tof the Dent family till the re bellion broke out? The Senator adds: lie has been President three years, followed by obloquy and reproach. He has made some mistakes in appointments no doubt; but the leading measures in his administration are in the inter ;st ol the country. The masses of the people who have grievances, who only want good government, see it, feel it, realize it. They believe we have the best ad ministration this nation has seen for forty' years ; and they' are right in this conviction. The Republicans of the country are looking to you, men ol New Hampshire, to recover your State. Pray what are the leading measures of his administration if the Santo Do mingo job. and the Loot general order iniquity, be not a part ? Why has he been censured as no President had been up to 1861, the advent of Republican ism. If the masses of the people con demned the censures, why are they con tinued ? Has not general Wilson him self reproached Grant for want of pro per tone in the administration of his high* office? Has he not condemned his intimacy with the late Jim Fisk, his acceptance of the hospitalities of the steamboat and theatre of the latter, his nepotism, his gift-taking, his indecent haste to be rich, his junketing about the country, his repeated absences from the White house, his selection of associates in New York and elsewhere, his persistent devotion to the military ‘mess’ and ring of Ingalls, Babcock, Porter and company ? Has not the Senator repeatedly stated in conversa tion that he deplored the necessity which was on the Republican party of again taking up such a candidate? [A 7 . Y. World Mr. John Graham, a citizen of Cam den recently died, aged 101 years. He was probably the oldest person in the county. He died in great want. He served in the South Carolina militia in the war of 1812, and had made applica tion for pension, but, owing to the ‘law’s delays,’ had not received it, Governor Scott has postponed the execution of Taylor Wilson, of Sump ter, convicted of murder and sentenced ! to be hung Friday next, until the fifth < day of April, a petition of inquiry and ‘ request that the sentence be commuted to life imprisonment having been re ceived. —Chalcston Courier Another Amendment.—On Friadayl last, tne Civil Service Committee ol i Congress agreed to ta he up for discus-1 sioti and action, at its meeting vester-l day, the joint resolution of McCrary,- of lowa proposing an amendment of the Constitution of the United States, which read as follows‘All civil offi cers of the United States, except Judges of the Supreme and Inferior Courts, the heads of Department and those whose duties are temporary in their character, shall hold office for a term of four years, unless a longer term shall be fixed by law. Congress may by law provide for the election by the people of post masters and other officers whoso duties are to bo performed within the limits of any State or parts ol a State, hut the President shall have the power of removal of any such officers, whether appointed or elected, for any cause af fecting the incumbent’s character, hab its or other qualifications, excepting for political or religious opinions.’ The Columbus (Miss.) Democrat says that Gen. Stephen D. Lee, well known in Mobile as a good soldier, was recent ly made the recipient of a pair of spurs used by General Robort E* Lee.
