BRAD IVEY, Sheriff Columbia County. KiT Egg time is at hand. SsT Peach and plum trees are in full bloom. CfT The weather bos been beautifully spring like for several days past. (if Gardening is now the order of th e day with t he provident ladies of our town. &fT According to the signs of weather prophets, this is to be a very late, cold spring. tfciT Lucias Q. Laz*»uby and Thomas Collins, w :re presented to the Grand Jury at this term of the Court for Vagrancy. CiT Work on the plantations in our vicinity is progressing vigorously, and large quantities of fer tilizers are daily being caried from our depot. Lusus Natur*. —We were shown a few days since a curiosity in the form of a four-footed chick en. The chicken, which died at hatching, was perfectly developed and natural in formation, ex cept a continuation of the spine beyond its usual length, and to which were attached the extra two feet somewhat smaller than the first, with the toes placed in the opposite direction. Wo turned it over to Dr. L., who we bclive has preserved it in kerosene, and can be seen at the Doctor’s office by those *ho are fond of the curious. Our Town Council Again. —Our Town Council -fcr energetically engaged in repairing the streets, planting shade trees, Ac., to the great convenience and pleasure of our people. Thomson is being made one of the prettiest towns along the line of the Georgia Railroad, and is rapidly enlarging her l>or ders. The present Town Council are certainly the *ight men lh the right place, deserviug and receiv ing the commendation of all, except those who are ■wont to render night hideous by their bacchanalian orgies, and vagabonds who [live by imposing upon the unsuspecting. Go on, gentlemen, in the good work you have begun until your programme is fully enacted, not doubting that you are on the right road. The Babcock fire Extinguished. —We were invited by Mr, John Cummings, the agent, a few evenings since to witness an experiment made with the above named machine to extinguish fire. The experiment was a total failure. We make it a rule to commend nothing without merit, or to censure •without cause, and while this experiment failed en tirely to subdue or check the fire, we must attrib uted more to the Ibad mangement of tho operator resulting from inexperience than to the lack of capacity in the Extinguisher. While we do not believejit would extinguish a flame that had become much heated, yet it would be eminently useful in extinguishing flresjin their incipient stage, or to hold them in check until efficient aid could be procured New Advertisements. —Messrs. Kean, Landrum, & Cos., ofler for sale a splendid stock of Dry (Goods through our columns to-day. See their (advertisement. Mrs. Leckiq, Cm! D. Cohen advertises his shoe-house to-day, and .offers this indispensable article on very fa c„Tahle terms. Examine his offer, which can be found is our columns to-day. James If, Hulsey, 123 Broad street, offers his services to our citizens to dye and renovate clothing. This will certainly be taken advantage of by the public. Clothing, uninjured in texture, is often (thrown aside bqgߣ3 they are faded. See application for guardianship in its proper column. The pressure on us forces us to deal curtly by our advertising friends to-day. We shall take oc casion to give a more deserved notice in an early issue. Superior Court. —The Spring session of the Superior Court of this connty convened on Mon day last, Jndge William Gibson presiding. The visiting bar in attendance were Frank H. Miller, H. G. Wright, Solicitor General Davenport Jack son, and W. T. Davidson, of Angusta; Charles H. Shockley, of Appling ; W. D. Tutt and Joseph Strother, of Lincoln county. Judge Gibson’s charge to the Grand Jury was able, eloquent and very forcible. He dwelled at length upon the law touching vagrants, and whisky venders—urging that the sale of intoxicating liq uors to men while drank, was the most fruitful Source of crimes. Judge Gibson makes an efficient officer, and we believe, presides with entire satisfaction to our people. The Grand Jury found a true bill against young Baker for murder, charged with the recent killing of a man named Thompson, near Dearing, Ga. Several presentments came before this body, but we have not been able to learn the result. Owing to the conflict of this Court with that of Warren county’, and the absence of many of the bar of the Augusta and Northern Circuits, in at tendance upon the Supreme Court, who are retain ed in cases here, Judge Gibson adjourned the Court till the fifth Monday in this month. Commusioxeßs Court. Edward Lamertine Kicklighter, a gent of the jack-o’-the-lantem per suasion, put in an appearance at our Commission ers Court on Tuesday morning last, charged with a violation of the 13th section of the town ordi nance. From the evidence adduced, it seems that Edward suddenly appeared in our town in the role of a showman, and, in scientific parlance, “billed” himself to give an entertainment for the edification our citizens, announcing in flaming posters that “Satan will soon appear in your midst.”— This frightful annoucement naturally produced a feeling akin to fear among our people, es pecially in the marshal, who came to the conclu sion it was the best policy to gather in his tax be fore his Satanic Majesty should appear, so before his wondrous performance commenced in the even ing, the marshal shouted out tax ! Edward told him to hold on for a while, and the marshal did hold on for a while, but no tax came. Then Ed ward said that his funds were low and that before any tax could come that it had to be made from his night’s performance. But every body being un willing and unprepared to see the devil so soon, only a small audience greeted] Edward’s eyes, Tax ! again yelled the marshal. Edward procras tinated, and said he would give a free show if the Commissioners would not claim a tax. That was agreed to by the Commissioners, but Edward be ing sharp did not stick to the stipulations of the treaty, but began to take in all the checks that offered. After the short performance was over the marshal grew impatient, and again de manded the tax, and planting himself in the door, declared that Edward should not pass until the tax was shelled out. Edward attempted to go out 4 4 just for fun but the marshal not seeing it in that light, nabbed Edward Lamertine, and invited him to repose in the calaboose. Edward protested, but ’twas no use, and after a night’s rest in that quiet chamber, Edward appeared before the grim visaged Board under the charge above stated. Af ter much testimony pro and con, the Court requi red him to pass a V into the treasury, for the tax and to pay the marshal for his room rent. Sweet Edward left promising to attempt to bring Satan in our midst no more. [From the Augusta Constitutionalist 28th ult] Inauguration. —The magnificent new building of James A. Gray A Cos. was opened to the public yesterday at 12 o’clock. Shortly after that hour a stream of ladies and gentlemen began to pour into the edifice, and the three floors were soon filled.— From the first story to the third they passed, sur veying the splendid dimensions and well arranged details of one of the finest buildings used as a store in the Southern States. Tlie proprietors re ceived the guests and bado them welcome. Every one appeared delighted, and expressions of admira tion were heard on every side. Upon the second floor an ample collation was spread out upon three long tallies, covered with snowy damask. Champaign and claret were furn ished in abundance, and the entertainment was recherche in every particular. It was an anima ted scene that one viewed, looking down from the arcade railing of the third floor upon the assem blage of ladies and gentlemen around the tables be low. The popping of corks and the hum of con versation filled the air, and all present seemed to be enjoying themselves in no little degree. The hosts, Messrs. Gray and Delaine, were attentive to their guests, and none were neglected. Tlie presence of the beautiful women of Augus ta lent no small charm to the occasion, which wil be long remembered by those wh° participated in its pleasures. The building is a great ornament to the <rftv and never fails to attract the attention of strangers. — Its front, composed of iron—painted white—and plate glass, presents an imposing appearance.— The entire length of the building is one hundred and twenty-five feet, its width forty-five feet and its height about sixty-feet. It is composed of three full stories and a basement or cellar. The latter is ten feet in height, and is a spacious store in itself. Above this is the first story, proper, sixteen feet high. This portion of the establish ment will contain the retail department, the book keeper’s desk, and the proprietors’ office. The second story, which is also sixteen feet in height, from floor to ceiling, will be devoted to the ladies’ reaily made clothing department female clerks will lie employed. The third story, which is four teen feet from floor to ceiling, is set apart for the wholesale department. A patent elevator for con veying goods or customers from the cellar to the third story, or intermediate floors, will be placed in one of the rear corners of the building. The balustrades of the staircases and the arcade are of American walnut, while the posts are of handsome French black walnut. A fine arcade in the centre of the edifice is topped by a dome, into which large panes of very thick glass are fitted. By means of this dome the establisment is thoroughly lighted during the day. The edifice is altogether a splen did affair, and a credit to the architect, the owners, and, last but not least, to the city. Editorial Notices are so common that it is nlmoet impossible for au editor to express his honest opinion of the merits of any article without beiog suspected of interested motives. Thi< f ct, however, shall not deter us from sayiog what we think of a now ad dition to the Ma eria Medica to which our atten tion has been directed. We refer to Dr. J. Walker’s California Venegar Bitters, a remedy which is making its way into more families just now than all ihe other advertised medicines put logether. There seems to be no question about the potency of its tonic alterative properties, while it posse, ses the great negative recommendation of containing neither aloohol nor mineral poison. That it is a specific fox Indigestion, Billiou-ness, Constipation, and many complaints of nervous origin, we have reason to know ; and we are assured on good authority that as a general iovigurant, regulating and purifying medicine, it has no equal- It is stated that its in gredients, (obtained from the Wilds of California,) 'are new to the medical world and its extraordinary eflbcts certainly warrrant the conclusion that it is compound of agents hitherto unknown. If popnlarity is any criterian. there can be no doubt of tho efficien cy of the Vinegar Bitters, £pr the sale of the article s immense anil continually increasing. nl3 4 The New Yoik Star is assured that Grant is now worth two million dollars. He may be worth it, but his party would be glad to sell him for one-tenth of the sum if they could find another candidate for whom the office-holders would all work and vote. —Courier Journal. The Prince Imperial of Fra ce.— A recent edition of the French Siecle says: ‘We learn by our London let ters that he who was Napoleon 111. will soon abdicate. The 16th of March, on which his son will come of age, is even mentioned as the day of abdication. The young Louis, whom. France could reproach neither with the war nor Metz nor Sedan, would become the ostensible chief of the Bonnpartist party. The ex-Emperor, disembarras sed from all personal care, would take up again his old trade of conspirator, and place his abilities at the service of his son.’ d&ommetrial. Cotton Report.
