We are gratified to learn that Miller stood quite a favor able Examination before the Examining board, one with credit and honor to himself. We certainly wish our friend all the success possible, and predict that a bright future awaits him. Milittart Orohsization.—A m eting of our, citizens was held on last Saturday lor the porposo of taking some preliminary steps towards the organ ization of a military Cavalry corps in our county agreeably to the provissions of the Code of Georgia, ou that subject. Hod. G. P. Stovall occupied the Chair, after some discussion and the appointment of committees to draft resolutions of organization, by-laws and other regulations the meetiug adjourned to meet again at the Court House on next Saturday afternoon the 13th, at 4 o’clock, when a permanent organization will be ezpected. All citizens favorable to this laudible object are requested to be on hand at the above mentioned place and time, or hand iu their names to R. W. Neal Esq., Secretary. No comment from us is necessar; to point out the meritorious object es such an enterprise, and we ' hope all of our young men will promptly respond to this call and take a zealous interest in the accom pl shment of an eatty organization. Upon application to the Governor, all necessary arms and accoutrements will be furnished, as soon as a permanent organization is effected. Beautify youb Fabm.—lt is a great mistake to suppose that money spent in reasonable improving the appearance of a place is money thrown away. It may be doubted whether there is any more di rect method to increase its pecuniary value.— Certainly its market valne will depend very much upon its outward appearance. Tastful and well potato<l buildings, well arranged yards and gar dens with neat fences, shade trees properly dis posed, good farm fence and cleanly-kept field, trill set off a farm to great advantage, and make an amazing difference when it comes to be sold.— And even if it be not sold, these things will add amazingly to the enjoyment by its possessor, if he be not blind for everything but the dollar. Every man, too, owes it to the community in which he is living to contribute to general reputation and to public enjoyment by making all his surroundings as attractive as possible. There is such a thing as paying too much attention to outside and to show; I but there is reason in all things, and a measure I of time and attention and expense should be devo- j , ted by every one to making his farm and his home More attractive every year that he lives. .1 onrnalisms, American lloMes. —The April number of this brilliant and successful illustrated dollar magazine, marks the close of the first volumn; This tnaga sine is eminently adapted to every homd in Ameri ca, since its splendid stories, sketches of travel, Sabbath Thoughts, songs set to music, fashion notes, jokes, articles for boys and girls, farmers, mechanics, and Free Masons and all secret societies make a variety of reading which must shit every body. It is filled every month by popular writersi All who subscribe get nearly GOO pages of reading matter, and an elegant engraving for only sl, and all who buy it of news dealers get a rich collection of amusing and instructive literature for only ten cents. Charles A. Taylor * Cos., of Boston, are the publishers. The Savannah News. —We have noticed for sev eral days past a large and beautifully printed pros pectus of the News hanging up in our postoffice. Prospectuses Tery often exagerate, but from a long and intimate acquaintance with this popular paper, we do not hesitate to say that nothing is claimed in the prospectus of the News that is not due to it. The News is beautifully printed, ably edited and fully up to the times in every department. We take real pleasure in recommending the News to onr readers as one of the best papers pnblshed in the South —lacking nothing that is essential to a first class paper. The News is published daily, tri-weekly and weekly, at Savannah, Ga. ffiTThe Savannah News says, the Cartersville Standard A Express is one of the largest and best edited weeklies in the State. We most heartily endorse the above compliment to the Standard A Express. The Lebanon Hebald. —The Lebanon, (Tenn.) Herald has donned anew dress, and looks os bright as anew pin. The Herald is emphatically a good paper, well edited and high-toned in its conduct, and scrupulously courteous in its intercouse with the press, meriting the good opinion of its contem poraries. We wish the Herald a long and happy career. Nfw Advertisements. —Our old friend, Peter Keenan, the celebrated Augusta shoo man, again advertises in our columns. Mr. Keenan is becoming widely known in the shoe busines, and enjoys the reputation of keeping on hand at all times one of the best selected stocks of boots and shoes in the city of Augusta. He is now located at 226 Broad street, at tho store lately occupied l>y James A. Gray A Cos., where he will be pleased to see his old McDuffie friends. If you want to deal with a "one price” store, and to get good bargains, go to Peter Keenan’s, The Advertisement of W. A. Ramsey, tho popu lar and well known Clothier, of Augusta, appears iu this issue. After sn experience of thirty years in the clothing business Mr. Ramsey flatters himself, and not without (food reason, that he has learned to “suit" all. W* have hail the pleasure of exam ining his stock, and pronounce it as fine as nny we have ever seen in the Augusta market. Mr. Ram sey is a Southern man, a polite gentleman, and a strictly honest merchant. Onr fathers knew Gus Ramsey, and patronized him, and we ask our friends visiting Augusta to go and do likewise. Christopher Gray A Cos., 204 Broad street, Au gusta, advertise their large and varied assortment of spring goods in this number. They have on hand an entire new stock of ladies dress goods, of the very latest styes and fashions. This firm is well known to onr people, and we hazard nothing in recommending it as worthy the confidence and patronage of our readers. Give the Emporium a call. Mr. J. Murphy A Cos., 244 Broad street, Augus ta, wholesale and retail dealers in Crockery, Glass and China ware, have openod the spring trade with an extensive and very fine stock, which they are selling at low prices. This is a good house, and we commend it to our merchants and trading friends. See card in another column. James G. Bailie A Bro., 205, Broad street, Au gnsta, have jnst received a beautiful assortment of spring goods, consisting of carpets of all kinds, mattings, window-shades, ..all papering, Ac., also have on hand groceries of all descriptions, which they are selling low for cash. Sec card iu to-day’s paper and be sure to give Bailie A Bro. a call. We direct attention to the professional card of Dr. £. S. Harrison in this issue. The Dr. has lo cated in our midst, and can be found in the office of Dr. J. S. Jones. We trust that pill-making may prove beneficial to him, and that he may live long to dispense blessings to the ailing. All and singular who have tan-bark anil hides for sale, will find it to their interest to consult tho ad vertisement of the Bonesville Manufacturing Co.— The petition for incorporating thiH Company will also be found in to-day's issue. It really affords us pleasure to have an opportuni ty to call the attention of our readers to the adver tisement of Mr. B. R. Johnson. Thomson has long felt the need of a good cabinet shop and furniture store—we now have one, with a skillful workman at its head. Let him be encouraged, not by buy ing what is not needed or unnecessary, but by giving him all your patronage in his line, instead of going to a distant market to purohase those ar ticles that may jnst as well be had at home. We believe onr citizens will find it to their benefit to sustain this as well as other home enterprises and industries. Give Mr. Johnson a call, and our word for it you will be pleased. Read his adver tisement. 1 ♦ «—— The Mexican Revolution.—Tre vino, with an escort, made a forced loan of twenty thousand dollars at Sal tillo. Tervino directed the exaction of fifty thousand at Monterey, where an American merchant’s store was plun dered in the enforcement of the loan. DIED. On the 31st of March, little Sallie R. Hadley, in fant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Hadley, aged about 17 months. Sweetly fell asleep in Jesus our little Sallie, she thafc had won the hearts of all by her innocent prattle, and winsome ways has left us to draw our hearts to Heaven Then, disturb not her slum bers, but let her sleep on in her beauty and inno cence, for the world was too dreary, too dark and too cold for one so lovely, so fragile, so fair. So very sad are tho hearts of those fond parents since the pet of their household is gone, but life’s troubles are over, they may go to her, though she cannot come again to them. They laid her in her little grave, With flowers upon her breast, A lovely blossom for the sky— So fragile yet so blest. In shadowy beauty o’er her brow, the life-like tresses lay; Her eyes were closed, as close in sleep—Death scarce had dimed their ray. dtotumewalL Cdttdil Report. Editorial Notices arc so common that it is almost impossible for an editor to express his honest opinion of the merits of any article without beint; suspected of interested motives. This f cl, however, shall not deter us from saying what we think of anew ad dition to the Materia Medica to wbich our atten tion has been directed. We refer to Dr. J. Walker’s California Venegar Bitters, a remedy which is making iu way into more families juit now than all the other advcrti.ed medicines put together. There seems to be no question about the potency of its tonic alterative properties, while it possesses the great negative recommendationof containing neither alcohol nor mineral poison. That it is a specific for Indig-stion, Billion ness, Constipation, and many complaints of nervous origin, we have reason to know ; and we are assured on good authority that as a general iuvigorant, regulating and purifying medicine, it has no equal. It is stated that its in gre tients, (obtained from the Wilde of California,) are new to the medical world and its extraordinary effects certainly warrrant the conclusion that it is compound ofageuis hitherto unknown. If popularity is any criterian. there can be no doubt of the efficien cy of the Vinegar Bitters, for the sale of the article is immense and continually increasing. n!3 4 O IST T I UVE E TILL THE FIRST OF NOVEMBER.
