Hparkluff Sunday Niffht.
Sittting in the comer
On a Sunday eve,
With a taper finger
Beating on your nleev«;
Starlight eyea arc caating
On yonr face the light -
Blew me! this is pleasant,
Sparking Snnday night.
How yonr heart is thnmping
Gainst your Snnday vest,
How wickedly ’tis working
On this day of rest;
Honrs seem bnt minutes
Aa they take their flight—
Bless me ’ ain’t it pleasant,
Sparking Snnday night,
‘ Pa” and “ma” are sleeping
On their peaceful bed,
Dreaming of the things
The folk* in meeting said ;
“Love ye one another!”
Ministers recite;
Bless me 1 don't we do it,
Sparking Sunday night?
One arm with gentle pressure
Lingers 'round her waist,
You squeeze her dimple hand,
pouting lips you taste;
She freely slaps yottr face.
More in lovo than spite ;
Thunder I ain’t it pleasant,
Sparking Snnday night?

T'ho Pla.nto.moua* Comet
Nature quiet* the apprehentiona of
the public with regard to the Apocryphal
comet of the Geneva astronomer, after
the manner following: ‘We have rea
sons to know that many weak people
have been alarmed, and many still weak
er people made positively ill, by an an
nouncement that has appeared in almost
all the newspapers, to the effect that
Prefessor Plantamour, of Geneva, has
dicovered a comet of immense size,
which is to ‘collide,’ as our American
frionds would say, with our planet on
the 12th of August next. We fear that
there is no foundation whatever for the
rumor. In the present state of science
nothing could be more acceptable than
the appearance of a good largo comet
and the nearer it comes to us the better,
for the spectroscope has a long account
to settle with the whole genus, which,
up to this present time, bus fairly elud
ed our grasp. But it is not too much
to suppose that the laymen in those
matters might imagine that the discov
ery would be too dearly bought by
the ruin of our planet. Doubtless, if
such ruin were possible, or, indeed,
Erobablu —but let us dicuss this point.
mpler, who was wont to say that
there are as many comets in the sky os
fishes in the ocean, Inis had his opinion
indorsed in later times by Arago, who
has estimated the number of these bod
ies which traverse the solar system at
17,500,000. But what follows from
this? Surely that comets are very
harmless bodies or we should have suf
fered from them long before this, even
if we do not admit that the earth is
as old us geologists would muko it.
But this is not all. It is well known
that some among their number wliicb
have withal put on a very portentous
appearance are merely the celestial
equivalent of our terrestrial ‘windbags’
brought down to their proper level
they would hnve shrunk into very small
dimensions indeed. But there is mere
comfort still. The comet of 1770 pos
itively got so near to Jupiter, that it
got entangled among his moons, the
diameter of which is only some 9,000,
miles; but the moons pursued their
courses as if nothing had happened,
while the comet was so discomfited by
the encounter that it returned by anoth
er road—t. e., astronomically speaking,
its orbit was entirely changed. While,
last of all, in our correspondence this
week will be found one fact the more in
favor of tho idt>a that, in ISGI, we
actually did pass through a comet.
Wc have a suggestion for those weak
people who are still alarmed by these
celestical portents and steadily refuse to
acquaint themselves with the most
elementary work oil astronomy, which
would conviuoe them how groundless
their tears are. In India, during the
late eclipse, the priests reaped magnifi
cent harvests from the offerings of tli»
faithful. In England, possibly, it would
be considered Hi correct to make such
offerings to the priest; but let them
still be made—to the Royal Astronomi
cal Society. In this way the Euglisli
Philistine would approach nearer the
standard of his less civilized brother,
science would be benefited, and, doubt
less, the orneti would be averted—at
all events, they always have been.’
Papeb House. — A style of house
which is said to bo coming somewhat
into vogue is made largely of paper,
this being the best nou-conduetor of
heat, cold and dampness. The paper
which is heavy and oompact, is put on
the outside of the frame, and in turn
covered with siding. It is said that
these houses are being built in tho
Western prairie country, where the
scarcity of timber renders some cheaper
material necessary. They are said to
exclude piercing wiuds and intense cold
better than ordiuary frame houses.
