Arrested. —A man calling himself George
Langston, but whose true name is thought to be
Conner, who killed Dr. Malone, of Columbia coun
ty, four or five years since, was arrested on
clay for that offense, by the Sheriff of our county^
ifsT During the Superior Court last week, a
white youth of seventeen summers, while being
examined on the witness stand, was asked what
Statehelred in, he intelligently answered “I do-no.’’
In vindication of the moral status of McDuffie, we
would say that the young mau lives in another

tciT Thecontiact for building the county jail has
been awarded by the Grand Jury, to Mr. Knox
of Union Point.
The Ordinary has been instructed by that body,
to borrow money for the purpose of insuring a speedy
erectiou of the same. Our county has recently in
curred a heavy debt for jail fees, and the sooner we
have One of our own, the better it will be tor the
■ooanty.
N. 8.-We take pleasure in calling the attention
of our readers to the advertisement of Mr. C. W.
Arnold, to bo found in auother column. Mr. Arnold
has purchased the entire interest of C. W. Arnold &.
Cos., and can he found at the old stand ready to wait
on his customers. Friend Charles sells
Fresh corn meal and good meat,
Fine flour from the beßtof wheat.,
Sugar and molasses, oh, how sweet —
And other things so nice to eat.
Homes. —We know that our farmers as a rule pay
little attention to home adornment, and many think
that every dollar expended in shade trees, pictures
and other adornments is so much money thrown
away, but they are Fadly mistaken. Make home
pleasant, and how betiei do it than by investing in a
few shade and ornamental trees.
[ There is nothing on a farm when offored for sale
that will attract attention sooner than a good well
with a pump in, plenty of sh-de trees in the door
yard, good fences and in repair, a variety of fruits
oi all kiuds adapted to this part of Georgia, neat
building*. &c. Inf ct iheee will make a farm sell
for more than one-third more. People passing by
and seeing a farm without these things will say that
the owner must be a eloveuly mau, or be would not
let his farm go to wreck in such a manner.
Columbia Superior Court. The Superior
Court met on Monday morning last, the Gth inst.,
Judge William Gibson presiding.
There were a good many cases on the common
law and equity dockets, but on account of the ab
sence of Gen. Toombs and CoL E. H. Pottle, who
are attorneys in most of the important cases, this
term of the Court will be a short one.
The Grand Jury returned several true bills on
indictments for misdemeanors. There is little bus
iness #n the criminal eocket.
From the Richmond bar there -were present
Gen. A. R. Right, Judges Hilliard and McLaws,
Frank H. Miller, Gen. Thodeus Oakrnan, and So
licitor General Jackson. Wm. D. Tutt, and
J. Strother, from Lincoln county: M. P. Reese,
from Washington; P. C. Hudson, and W. T. o’uea|
i from Thomson, and the local bar, Chas. H.
‘ Shockley and D. C. Moore.
j Marriage. —Mr. Charles S. Dußose, of War
j renton, was married yesterday [last Thursday, the
2d inst.] morning in Warreuton, io Miss S. Der
j telle Welbom, of that place* His attendants
j were Messrs. A. M. Dußose, N. E. Harris: S. S.
Shields and B. H. Sassnet: and Misses A. Lou
Cody, Mary Cody, Mary Digram, of Columbus,
and .Anna Rogers, of Augusta.
Mr. Dußose and his young bride passed through
this city last evening en route for Kentucky and
the West. He remained at the Kimball House a
few hours, where he received the congratulations
of his friends.
Mr. Dußose was formerly connected with the
Hancock Journal. Afterwards he was one of the
editors and proprietors of the McDuffie Journal,
both of which he left to devote his time to the law,
in which profession his energy' and talents will in
sure him success. It is a little singular—but none
the less pleasant—that all of liis attendants (ladies
excepted) are ex-editors. The happy couple have
our cordial congratulations.
The above from the Atlanta Sun, and, as usual,
he gets things into a slight tangle. Mr. Dußose
was the founder of the McDuffie Journal, and for
several months the sole editor and proprietor of
this paper. The talents and energy of Mr. Dußose
gave the Journal a character and popularity rarely
attained by any journal in so short a time. He
left the Journal, as our co-temporary observes, to
seek for fame and for fortune in his profession.
We are not aware that Mr. Shields is an ex-editor.
We regret much that circumstances prevented
our attending the marriage ceremonies of our
friend ; but present or absent, if good wishes avail
anything, we tender them to him—as pure as
friendship can make tm-m —in lavish abundance.—
May he and his fair bride never know sorrow.
The Cause of Temperance finds somo of its
most insidious and dangerous foes in the many so
called “tonics” and “appetizers,” made of cheap
whisky and refuse liquors, finished up to suit de
praved appetites, under the name of medicins, Dr.
Walker's California Vinegar Bitters are none of
these. They are not a beverage, but a genuine
medicine, purely vegetable, prepared from Cali
fornia herbs by a regular physician. For all dis
eases of the stomach, liver, kidneys, bladder, skin
and blood, they are an infallible and unrivall rem
edy.
' 3lhsoiik* Troubles.
The colored question is agitating the
Fremasons of Now Jersey. Two years
ago, application was made to the Grand
Lodge of the State for a charter of anew
lodge in Newark, to be called Alpha
Lodge. It having been reported that the
new lodge intended to initiate colored
men, the applicants weie questioned on
that point, and declared the report false.
A charter was granted to the new
lodge, on the reception of which, pro
posals for membership from a dozen
colored men weie entertained. This
created great excitement among the
white Masons throughout the State, and
on the night when the candidates were
to be balloted for, the Grand Marshal
of the State appeared by order of the
Grand Master, and demanded the char
ter of the lodge, lie received it, and
Alpha Lodge was formally suspended.
The matter came up at the last ses
sion of the Grand Lodge of New Jer
sey, and after a sharp discussion the
charter of Alpa Lodge was restored by
a vote of 113 to 103. Alpha Lodge
then elected the colored candidates, and
began to give their degree. This ac
tion aroused the white Masons to new
efforts. Trenton Lodge, No. 5, imme
diately petitioned the Grand Master to
call a special communication of the
Grand Lodge to reconsider its action,
and a united effort was again made to
secure the revocation of Alpha Lodge.
The effort has failed. Grand Master
Blaine has refused to convene the Grand
Lodge. Meanwhile Alpha Lodge has
giveu its colored brethren the degree of
Fellow-craft, and on Monday last, two
black men were raised, through the aid
and assistance of their white brethren,
to the sublime degree of Master Mason.
