Good evenin’, Mr. Pettingill.
He don't mind me, it aint no use—
Ah, wa’al, my time has come and gone!
But, then, I’d really no idee
How Tilda was gettin’ on.
These gals grow up, and pretty soon
They lay us old ones on the shelf,
Lorenzo is a smart young man—

When you see a ragged nrchin
Standing wistful in the street,
With tom hat and kneeleaa trowsers,
Dirty faced and bare, red feet.
Pons not by the child unheeding ;
Smile upon him. Mark me—when
He’s grown he’ll not forget it,
Kor, remember, boys make 'men.
When the buoyant, youthful spirits
Overflow in boyish freak,f
Chide your child in gentle accents—
Do not in your anger speak,
Yon must sow in youthful bosoms
Seeds of tender mercy, thenj
Plants will grow and bear good fruitage
When the erring boys are men.
Have you never seen a grandsire,
With his eyes aglow with joy,
Bring to mind some aot of kindness—
Something said to him—a boy?
Or relate some slight or coldnoss,*
With a brow all clouded, when
Ho said, they were too thoughtless £
To remember boys make men.
Let ns try to add somo pleasure
To the life of evory boy,
For each child needs tender interest
In its sorrow and its joy.
Call your boys homo by its brightness TT
They avoid a gloomy den,
And seek for comfort elsewhere,
And romomber, boys make men.

Further Particular) of the Tragedy.
A balloon ascension, resulting in a
fearful tragic catastrophe, occurred nt
Decatur, Alabama, Inst Monday. The
balloon was one of the mainattrac tions
connected witli Mike Lipman’s Queen
City Circus.
When a largo crowd had gathered
and before the process of inflation had
been fully completed, Prof. Adkins, the
aeronaut, expressed great uneasiness as
tn the safety of the ascension. The
circus men, however, only laughed at
his apprehensions, and, in a joking way,
remarked that ho would come down all
right. Still he could not dismiss his
dark forebodings, and after he had got
ten into the basket of tlio balloon pre
paratory to its being let off, he remark
ed to the spectators in a sad tone of
voice, ‘This is the lust ascension I’ll ever
make!’
Very soon, the balloon was released
from its mooring and shot up almost
like a rocket, ascendiug to the height of
about ball a mile. It was steadily driv
en by a current of wind over Decatur,
hovered over the Tennessee River and
then descended as rapidly as it had as
cended, falling about the middle of the
river. Prof. Adkins soon rose to the sur
face, but having unfortunrtely become
entangled in the ropes attached to the
basket, lie succeeded in releasing him
self only after a desperate strnggle
which, it, is supposed, exhausted his
strength. lie swam heroically toward
the shore opposite Decatur, while the
balloon floated down stream.
A fisherman named Abe Nichols,
who was half a mile away at the time
the balloon fell into the river, rowed
toward it as fast as possible, to save
the daring .eronaut. Not being able to
see him after the balloon had stuck the
water, and believing that he would
cling to it until it sunk, Nichols made
for the balloon. On nearing it how
ever, he discovered Prof. Adkins some
distance off. and at once tried to row to
him, but in vain, for just as he got
within about twenty or thirty feet of
him, Prof. Adkins, who had himself
nearly reached the shore, sank and rose
no more.
Some who are urging the Democrat
ic Party to forsake its principles, tram
ple upon its record, stultify itself, and
completely Radicalize the party, are al

Amnesty Cheapening. —The Wash
ington correspondent of the Baltimore
Sun says:
It seems to be conceded now among
Liberal Republicans that it was a short
sighted policy to make any exceptions
in the amnesty bill that recently pass
ed, and there does not seem to be any
serious objection to passing in the 36th
37th Congress. The House, at least, it
liberally disposed in that direction. Is
some days ago passed one special ate,
and on Monday passed another to re
lieve Messrs. Walker and Underwood,
of Georgia, and John V. Wright, A. O.
P. Nicholson and John M. Quarles, of
Tennesse, who were members of the
36th Congress.
Subsequently, Mr. Sloss, of Alabama,
offered a bill to remove the disabilities
of Geo. S. Houston, of Alabama.—
Mr. Walla, of Florida, urged so to do
by GBn. Butler and Mr. Maynard, ask
ed leave to offer on amendment, and
proposed to tack on the Civil Rights
bill, but Mr, Sloss declined to accept it
Mr. Wells appealed to be permitted to
offer it on the ground that he had never
refused to vote for amnesty, but it
was suggested that that bill should
stand or fall on its own merits. The
Amnesty bill was then passed.
We ought to welcome as allies and
friends, all who forsa/re Radicalism and
Centralization and who will co-operate
with us in checking these and restoring
the government to its ancient principles
of local Self Government; (not Gree
ley’s kind of local self government,
which subjects it to what the Central
Authorities may permit) but whfin
Democrats have their own professions,
their record, their time-honored princi
ples, and go over to the support of a
Radical upon Radical principles, they
ought not to hold out the idea that
such a step is Democratic, or a triumph
on such a line would be a Democratic
triumph, or be of any advantage to the
Democratic Party or its principles.
Shall the Great Democratic Party go
over to a small squad of dissatisfied Radi
cals, who refuse to come to us, but in
vite us to forsake our principles and join
them on their Platform? Let them
come to us if they are in favor of reform
—if they are in earnest—if they desire a
restoration of tho governaient to its
pristine purity.
Hard Run. —‘So far as Mr. Greeley's
remodelling of the Cincinnati platform
has any political bearing, its signifi
cance consists in his shaping it with a
view to catch Democratic votes. The
platform, as he has newly framed it,
contradicts and puts to shame the re
cord of his public life. It is an abject
renunciation of almost everything
that he has spent his life in advocating.
This stiffbid for Democratic votes, at
the sacrifice of consistency, stamps him
as a demagog::?- He has virtually
given up everything for be bus
been contending for the last forty years,
political philosophy add all. It would
be curious to append to each article of
the Cincinnati platform as he has fash
ioned it, contradicting quotations from
his own writings on the same points.—
The contrast might not make him
blush ; but it would convince the coun
try that Mr. Greeley is ready to make
any sacrifice of principle and c insisten
cy to gratify his ambition of spending
four years in the White House as the
dispenser of offices.— N. Y. IVoclil.
During a class meeting held several
years since by the Methodist brethren of
a Southern village, Brother Jones went
among the colored portion of the con
gregation. Finding there an old man
notorious for his endeavors to serve God
on the Sabbath and Satan the rest of
the week, he said : ‘Well brother Dick,
I’m giad to see you here. Haven’t stole
any turkeys since I saw you last?’
‘No, no, brudder Jones, no turkeys.’
‘Nor any chickens, brother dick ■’
‘No, no, brudder Jones, no chickens.’
‘Thank the Lord, brother Dick!
That is doing well, my brother,’ said
brother Jones, leaving brother Dick,
who immediately relieved his over-bur
dened conscience by saying to a near
neighbor, with an immense sigh of re
lief:
‘Ef he’d said ducks he'd had me!

One of the lackeys of The President
