Tho Way-worn piljrrim.
JIT THE LATE BET. WJC. AK*OLD.
Now my Lord doth bid me labor,
And do all the good I can,
To mjmelf and to my neighbor,
That is every child of man.
And when all my work's completed,
I ehall then l>e called away;
•Jeans — high in glory Rested,
Then will apeak to me, and say:
“Way-worn pilgrim, thee I pity,
Thon hast suffered ranch I know,
Labored hard to reach the city
Where immortal pleaanrea flow,
Now thy pleasing expectation
Thon ahalt fnlly realize,
In tho joyful habitation
Os my saints above tho skies.
“Wny-wom pilgrim, end thy journey,
Hie, and thon shalt happy be,
800 ! I've sent my angels for thee,
Como with them, and dwell with me;
Lot the passage not alarm thee,
Though the waves of Jordan roar
Nothing in the least shall harm thee—
I will bring Ikce safely o'er.
“Way-worn pilgrim, I am gracions,
Though my ways may seem sevore;
In my sight thy death i» precious,
And to savo thoo I am near,
I have always thee befriended.
And I will befriend then still;
Every heir of my salvation,
Here shall live and reign with mo.”
Moplgsiffo on tho Farm.
Mary, let’s kill the fatted calf and celebrate tlio day,
For the last dreadful mortgage on tho farm is
wiped away.
I have got tho papers with mo--they »ro right as
right can bo—
Lot us laugh and sing together, for tho dear old
farm is free.
Don't all the Yankees celebrate tho fourth of July?
Jlocauso 'twns then that Freedom's sun lit up our
nation's sky;
Why shouldn't we, tliou, celebrate, and tho day
ne’er forget?
Where is there any freedom like being out of debt ?
I’vo riz tip many mornings an hour before the sun,
And night hoH overtaken nio lioforo the task was
done.
When weary with tho labor, 'twas this thought that
moved my arm —
Each day of toil will help pay tho mortgage on tho
Farm.
And, Mary, you havo done your part in rowin’ to
the shore,
By hikin' eggs and butter to tho little villngo storo j
You did not spend tho money in dressing up for
show,
lint Rang from mom till evening in your faded cal
ico.
And llossio, our sweet daughter—God Moss her lit
**■» heart—
The lad that gets her for a wife must bo by naturo
smart —
film's gone without piano herlonoly hours to charm,
To have a hand in paying off tho mortgage on tho
farm.
111 build a little Oottago soon, to nmko yonrhoart
rejoice,
I’ll buy a good piano to go with Bessie's voice;
You shat! not make your butter with that up and
down concern,
For I'll go this very day and buy the Uncut patent
churn.
Lay by your faded calico, and go with mo to town,
And buy yourself and Bessie a nieo and shining
gown;
Low prices on for our prodtteo uood not give us
alarm,
Sprueo up a little, Mary, thero's no mortgngo on
tho farm.
While our hearts are now so joyful, Mary, lot us
not forget,
To thank tho God of heaven foi being out of debt:
For Ifo gave ruin and sunshine, amt put strength
into my arm,
And lengthened out my days to soo no mortgage
on the farm.

Immediately after the Into lamented
surrender I returned to llie bosom of
my family, bearing upon my body the
marks of honorable and legitimate war
fare. If a man has no right, in the
bosom of his own family, pray whose
bosom lias he a right in 1 But I didn’t
go right in. Not by any means. My
badge of chivalry just at that time, was
not of a character to commend me, at
once, to the arms and affection of my
too scrupulously neat and tidy wife. I
was ordered into quarantine. I was
put upon docks for repairs. In other
words, I had the itch. California itch,
it was pronounced by competent
judge*; but why so denominated, I
nm at a loss to determine, unless be
cause it was a healthy, robust, salubri
ous case. This was the true state of
the case—and it was the first case 1 had
ever had, although I had been a law
yer for some time, by profession, bar
ring the practice—for it is always well
to bar the practice at the bar.
I reached home that night in May
<>s, after a hard day’s walk through a
gentle rain, and took my seat by a
cheerful spring fire. Somehow I had
conscientious scruples against letting
the itch part of nay military giory leak
out until next morning. But it was in
vain. In vain I strove to let conceal
ment, like a worm, feed on my damask,
etc. My grimaces, my bodily gyra
tions, soon began to point a moral and
tell a tale. Uriah, said the old lady
slowly and gloomily, you’ve got the
itch/ And I wouldn’t have ft to break
out in the bosom of my family for any
thing on eirth. It would be a shame
and a scandal to the neighborhood. I
had to own up. I nut on a ghastly
grin and tried to make her believe the
itch, after all, was nothing but a patri
otic luxury, a good thing to have in a]
family. She couldn’t see it. She re- j
fused positively to come within six feet ;
of me, while the children stood aloof |
and stared at me as if I was a wild !
beast. I tried to he familiar— but it j
was no go. I had been absent many j
weary months, and was full of love 1
and poetry.
“Como rest in this bosom, my own stricken dear,”
didn’t seem to strike any one in particu
lar. The question was, was I stored
away that night in a room to myself,
to muse on the pomp and pride and
circumstance of gloriously —especial-
ly the circumstance. My wiii* was in
exorable. I suppose you knoiK what
that means—in a woman ? It you
don’t, come down and stay a week
with me, and take occasion to bring a
quantity of mud in on your boots, and
it won’t take you long to find out. —
She dou’t put her foot down often, hut
when she does she puts it down a little
of tho firmest. I know very well I
would have to get rid of that case
completely before I could ever Anow
my rights and knowing dare maintain
them. It was the worst case I had
ever heard of. Scratch. I reckon if
all the scratching I did in any one day
had been spread it would have covered
a surface equal to twenty-five acres—
good measure. And what was getting
to be still more serious, my nails were
fast wearing down into the quick, and
corns were growing on the batls of my
fingers. So early the next morning,
after my arrival home, I hurried over
to consult an old steam doctor who had
long been the oracle of the neighbor
hood, and laying alt tny troubles lairly
and squarely before him, begged for a
short, sharp and decisive remedy.
lie asked me if I was equal to the
emergency. I gladly answered in the
affirmative. I was equal to anything
that would speedily restore my wife’s
lost love. I felt like one who trode
alone; and there was nothing in this
world that was half so sweet as love’s
old dream;—tho same old dream. He
said he though lie could sweeten me.
I took the bottle of turpentine ac
cording to directions, went home and
locked up in my room with all hut me
departed, I began to strip for the con
test. I was all over as spotted as a
leopard, and as raw as a pioce of new
beef. I poured the saving fluid into a
saucer, caught up about a gill into the
hollow of each hand, and rubbed it on
with the energy that springs from des
pair. I used up half the bottle before
L stopped to think. Then I didn’t stop
long. I made a start as I thought for
tho door, and found myself half way
up tho chiniiey. I rolled down and
rolled over, and screamed tike a wild
Indian. Talk about yallow jacket
plasters and hornets nests and honey
bees and abominable bumble bees, and
hot ashes, and hell fire / If I hand’t
boen dumped heels over head into the
furnace of the Tennessee Iron Works, 1
would freeze to death in five minutes.
I was on the bed, under the bed, walk
ing first upon my heels and then upon
my toes and champing the hit, and
chawin one leg of my pants, till it loot
ed litre a dilapidated dish-rag. I had
enough rebellion in me to havo started
three small republics. My wife and
children vveTe pounding and screaming
at (be door trying to get in; but 1
oouldn’t find the door, for the room
was (lying round like a spinning jenny.
I was foaming at tho mouth IHe fif
teen cases of hydrophobia, and calling
alternately for water and fire.
Tho next morning there was less one
case of itch in the so-called, anyhow.
I pealed off like an onion. I shed
enough scales that night to have set up
a Now England fishery.
My hide drew up till it was with the
greatest difficulty I could get my feet
to the floor for more than a week. In
deed, all my friends say that my sivin
has been short ever since.
In less thou twenty-four hours after I
was able to get about one steam doctor
had timely notice, signed, sealed and
delivered by order of the chief of the
Klu-Klux-Klaq to emigrate. He is now
a matyr in some county of Ohio on ac
count of his ‘political opinion,’ and has
once represented his district in Con
gress.
The Orangemen of this city have de
cided to parade July 1 2th, and expect
that six thousand men will join the pro
cession, not counting the police or the
military. It is said that the Police
Commissioners will be requested to al
low the Orangemen to carry their ban

they consider their espesial property.
The question of a parade rests with the
