IpaceUaneoitiSu '1 Ins lJoatU Penalty—X.loj«l itiul IInntr««l sit Ojik>llion>e. Tlw crowds had been pouring into the town from all quarters on every animal that could carry a human being and by every conveyance that could run on wheels. ll<ach passing train made its contribution, until the num ber assembled could have been counted by thousands—the majority, of course, negroes. The day, which had broken with a cloudless sky, bright and beauti ful during the morning, became some what cloudy but still excessively hot. Most of the members of the family of both men paid their farewell calls during the morning, but these last part ings were too sacred to be intruded upon by me. Many were affected at the sight, the sheriff by no means the least. The attendance, though im mense, was orderly and in the main quiet. I must confess, however, some surprise at the questionable haste of a number ot people of the better class, among them many ladies who had evideytly conic miles to see two fellow creatures launched into eternity. The excitement increased on the ar rival of the down passenger train. It brought an immense crowd, including Dr. Collins, Baptist minister, from Pci ry, and Drs. RawD and Cooke, of Marshallville, summoned as medical witnesses. These gentlemen were at once conducted to the jail. Ihe Ilev. R. C. Horn ad ay, of Mercer University, was also present, she ministers had a I lid interview with the prisoners, ex horting them to consider their condition and io make their peace with their Maker. Alter this, preparations were made lor the march to the place of ex ecution, which was in the following order; A body of guards, a buggy containing llolsenbake, driven by Air, Hudson ; buggy containing Lloyd, driv en by the Sheriff; guards, physicians and reporters. The guards were oil each flank of the buggies, a deputy sheiill being in the immediatereach of each. At twen ty minutes past eleven the procession moved at a slow pace, followed by crowds, llolsenbake appeared to suf fer much mentally, but Lloyd wots indif ferent. The Gallows was erected on a piece of waste ground situuted about a quar ter of a mile from the city, which form erly belonged to the murdered man, Fish. The hideous machine was well put up by Mr. James Lowry, of Ogle thorpe. It reached sixteen feet trom the ground to the. top of the beam ; the drop platfoim being placed in the mid dle eight feet from the ground. Closo by were tliecotlins that were to receive the boddies of the men then living.— Thut of llolsenbake was a Fisk motalic case, furnished by Messrs. Griffin & Hy att. of Montezuma. Lloyd's coffin was of walnut, covered with black cloth. On the arrival at the place of execution, llolsenbtke was assisted up, as the wound lie received in the thigh pre vented his walking or even standing alone. Lloyd walked up with much limitless. Both then sat down, umbrel las being held over them. The heat was now intense. The ropes were now produced and were adjusted by IS he rill Lee, assisted by Mr. Gumago, a former Sheriff of the county, and JJi-puty Ssbcritl Greer. — The fatal noose was first put over the head of Lloyd, who, seizing it in his hands, tried its strength and apparently the possibility of it "giving away from above. When it came to llolscubake’s turn, he rose, and uot being satisfied with the length, asked for more topo, and measuring the drop by his own length by putting the noose on his too, remarked, ‘lf it has got to come, let it come.’ The adjusting of the rope oc cupied sometime, ami exactly at 11:50 Sheri If Lee announced the execution was about to take place. Ho said they had one hour to live, and during that time each of them would be allowed thirty minutes to address the crowd it they wished. llolsenbake rose with difficulty.— Ho was supported ou each side. Lloyd was sitting down chewing tobacco calmly, with his back against one of the posts. He eyed llolsenbake closely and listened to him with profound at tention. Having taken water freely, llolsenbake said, in substance, as fol lows : Fellow-citizens, we are met on a most solemn occasion—met here to take my life. I entreat your prayers. Task your fervent prayers in my behalf.— The fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much, and in praying for me you may convert your own souls. I appear before you as a criminal about to suffer an ignominious death, but 1 can sincerely say that at heart 1 am no criminal. lam about to be unjustly executed. I have failed to obtain jus tice in the courts of law. The laws have been illegally or unjustly execu ted. Ido not speak as a lawyer, but so it seems to me. 1 am arraigned as the principal for the crime of rnarJer ing a man who has long since gone ‘to that bourne from whence no traveler ’ere returns.’ I trust God has been I merciful to him. lam the man who J took his life. [Murmuis of horror] 1 ; had lost my reason ; I was a monomani ac; I had nothing against Golonel Fish, i but I had heard that he had desecrated , the dearest affections of my heart; that : he had violated my household ties and sullied the reputation of my little daugh ter, who thank God, lias been for months in Heaven, and I trust I shall speedily bo with her. Ido not fee! as though I was the author of this crime. Everything I have stated coneernidg my accomplice has been honestly and truthfully stated. I have been betray ed by wolves in sheep’s clothing. He then gave the particulars of his confession to Col. 11. P. Furrow, late Attorney General for the .State, stated how it was obtained, and said of Mr. Furrow : I tell you, fellow-citizens, he stands to day before God and this community a degraded and disgraced mortal. I have nothing against him, but he has not only forfeited his word, bat sacri ficed his honor; and more still, he is a convicted perjurer, and the court records will prove it. There is here to-day standing before me an honorable and high-minded gentleman, one who was engaged in my defense—Col. W. S. Wallace. I refer to him ; he knows what I say is true. I wish to God (passionately) I knew how to talk, but my language is inadequate to tell of the murderous outrage that has been perpetrated against me. I waff derang ed ; the separation of my family from me was my ruin. [Pause ] The in juries I sustained in that connection caused me to lose my reason. [Pause.] My life will pay the forfeit—-I am exe cuted wrongfully—l have-failed to ob tain justice; it has all been done through prejudice ; they have suffered their prejduices to be aroused. He than/ced and complimented the prison officials that had had charge of him, and closed by saying lie left the world without bearing malice against any man, and he hoped no one had a prejudice against him. If there was he did not know it. The above speech was well delivered. The first part of it was at times elo quent. The delivery was clear and distinct, and it appear as if the entire audience caught every word of it. Lloyd was now assisted to rise, lie spoke rapidly and in a loud voice, but what he.said was not nearly so connec ted as his predecessor. Our space pre cludes the possibility of giving his re marks in full. The poiuts were us fol lows : He was in his G2d year; had never had a difficulty ; never paid a line or costs. Had lived an honorable and useful life. Had neVer himself, or in collusion with others, entertained one iota of criminal feeling against any man, lie declared that Jones. Farrow and the detectives had hatched the matter up. ‘I swear,’ said he, ‘before you and before my God, before whom 1 shall soon appear, I am innocent. II I had dreamed of such a tiling I would not have allowed it.’ lie said his death was a conspiracy, and W. B. Jones was at the bottom of it ; his blood would cry for vengeance ; and conclu ded, ‘I put my blood ou him (Jones) for three generations and ca’l God to witness it. Jones got Stubbs out and exerted himself to convict me. I want all Mr. Fish’s family to know it. lam innocent.’ Several parties mounted the scaffold to bid good bye to the unfortunate men, most of them being much affected. At Holsenbake’s request a hymn was sung, after which a beautiful and ap propriate prayer was offered up bv the Rev. Dr. Collins. During these religious exorcises the audience was much affected. Holsen bakc was religiously excited, clasping his hands, crying and exclaiming ; ‘I am going to Jesus ;’ ‘O, Lord, take inc;’ 'Jesus, save my soul,’ etc. Lloyd looked pale but took no notice. Both men wore then closely pinioned. Lloyd said; If I have insinuated anything in what I have said against any one lam sorry lor it; if God can forgive them I can. Holsenba/iO said something to the same effect. Lloyd continued —I have lived a long time and have knowingly done no wrong to any one. Il l have I will restore it fourfold. The white caps were now produced and every one was awaiting the fatal moment. Lloyd said, as the cap was being ad justed '1 am about to die. My hands are clear ol any other man’s iilood.’ llolsenbake said. ‘Lord Jesus, re ceive my spirit.’ The caps were then tied, and at two minutes and a half before 1 o'clock three strokes with a hatchet were heard, then a heavy ‘thud,’ a few convulsive strug gles, very slight, and the spirits of two mortals hud lied to the Goa who gave them life, there to be arraigned before a tribunal that cannot err—a Judge whose justice is tempered with mercy. The physicians declared Lloyd dead in 10 minutes. Holsenbake’s pulse did | not cease to beat for 27 ) minutes. Their bodies were deliveied to their friends and the vast crowd dispersed. J. L>. L.
