i’octrs. _ The Youug Widow. She in modest, she is bashful, Free ajid easy, but not bold— * like an apple, ripe and mellow, Not too young and not too old ; Half-inviting, half-repelling, Now advancing ami now shy; There is mischief in her dimple, There i» danger in her eye. Hire has studied human nature, She is schooled in all her arts, She has taken her diploma As the mistress of all hearts ; She can tell the very moment Vfhen to sigh and when to smile, Oh 1 a maid is sometimes charming, But a widow all the wlulo! You arc sad? how very serious Wi” uer handsome face become; Ar i you angry ? she is wretched, Lonely, friends, tearful, dumb, Are you mirthful 't how her laughter, Silvery sounding, will ring out; She can lure and onlch and plsy yon, As the angler does liis trout. All old bachelors of forty, Who have grown so ls>ld and wise, Ye adonises of twenty, With your love locks in your eyes, You may praetico all the lessons Taught by Cupid since the fall, But X know a little widow, Who could win and fool you all. “Uo Good to Yoiti’Mclf.” 7IY JOHN It. SAXE. “Good-by 1 good-by I” tho driver said, As the coach went off in a whirl; And the coachman bowed his handsome bond, •‘Be cioob to youiihelf -my girl 1” Ah! many fond good-by I’ve heard, From many nn aching heart; And many a friendly farewell word, When strangers came to part. And I've heard a thousand merry quips, And many a senseless joke, And many a fervent prayer from lips That all a-trembling spoke. And many a bit of good advice In smooth proverbial phrase; And many a wish —of little price— For health and happy dnys. But musing how the human soul (What’or tho Fates may will) Still measures by its self-control Its greatest good or ill. Os benedictions, I protest, ’Mid ninny a shining pearl, I like tho merry coachman's best— “Bo good to yourself—my girl!" Foeolirn- Horn Oltl/.on n. The census tables of ‘Occupation,’ just issued nt Washington, afford ma terial for instructive study. According to the last enumeration, 12,500,000 in habitants of the United States are en gaged in the pursuit of gainful occupa tions, and out of this aggregate 2,698,- 000 are of foreign birth. Analyzing the returns applicable to immigrants, we find that 949,164 were born in Ire land, 836,502 in Germany, 301,779 in England and Wales, 72,000 in Scot’and, and tho remainder in Scandinavian countries France, Japan, and British America. Tho approach to equality in tho numbers of tho Germans and the Irish is one of the remarkable points of the comparison. The rapid increase of the German element in the Unite! States has already attracted attention, and it now appears that the proportion of skilled workmen among this class is far greater than among tho Irish.— There are 108,000 Germans engaged in manufactures of various kinds, against 264,000 ol Irish birth—an actual ma jority of 44,000 in favor of the former, hut really a much larger proportion when the relative numbers of the two races are considered, the Irish exceed ing the Germans by a difference of 112,- 000 souls. Again, the common labor ers and domestic servants appear in tiie following proportions : Germans, 96,- 432 unskilled workm 'll, and 49,866 do mestic servants—making a total of 139,295, out of an aggregate of 836,- 502 ; Irish, 229,199 unski led workmen and 145,956 domestic servants—mak ing a total of 375,155, out of an ag gregate of 949,164. The superior skill of tho Germans is therefore strikingly illustrated. The Swedes, Danes, and Norwegians are chiefly engaged in agri culture The English, Sccrteb, and fFelsh are principally employed in manufactures. The number of miners in tho United States is 152,000; of carpenters, 344,- 000; of shoemakers, 171,000; of tai lors, 161.000; of operatives in mills, 224,500. There arc also 62,000 physi cians and surgeons, 44,000 clergymen, 5,286 journalists, and 40,000 printers. Probably one-quarter of the number of persons engaged in these avocations are of foreign birth, lmmigraton, there fore, has added very largely to the sources of our national wealth during the past decade, and it is likely that the next Census will show an increase still larger ; the Germans especially re vealing an intense desire to leave the Fatherland, with its meagre wages and its inaccessible lands, for the freer and broader country which offers them good pay, constant work, and as much as they choose to buy. —Commercial Advtr iscr. From the Hamilton Times. A Cow •with tlioH„y<li-i»l>lioT>lii Trees two Men. Mr. J. R. Parsons, who resides a few miles from the city, informs us that the other day he went with his hired man, a German, into n large timber lot to drive up some cattle. Among thjpm was a fine cow, whose actions indicated that something was the matter, and he called the attention of the hired man to her, and told him to look at her eyes, that she was mad, and he thought she was ‘going for’ them. The words were hardly out of his mouth, when the cow made a charge at Jack, with a most ter rible bawl, and he made for a shell bark going up it with admirable facility fora few feet, out of reach of the vicious brute. The cow then turned for the German, and he‘cooned it’ up a small sapling and was soon among the branceh es and out of danger. Jack’s tree was a rough one, and hard to climb, being from twenty-five to thirty feet to the limbs, so he tried to slip down and find a better tree, but the cow was on tho war path, and made for him every time he came to the ground, and once catch ing him on the leg and bruising it se verely. Finding that his strength was failing, he determined to go up to the limbs, where he could take a rest. This he accomplished with conside damage to his clothing as well as abra ding the skin on his arms. Once safely among the branches, the two patiently waited for the cow to go away, hut she seemed determined to keep her advant age, and watched the two treed gentle men like a hawk. Hours passed, and night was coming on, and Jack began to feel uneasy, so he commence a series of hallooes for help. A neighbor pass ing along the road answered the call, and was made acquainted with the situ ation, and succeeded in directing the at tention of the cow to himself, and she vigorously attacked the new comer through the fence until time was allow ed Parsons and his man to get down from the trees and skip out out of the enclosure, closely pursued by the in furiated cow. It seems to have been a plain ensn of dydropliobia, and the an imal died that night. Defiant.—Washington, August 4. —-Garrit Smith has visited thelvu-Klux prisoners at Albany, and urges clemen cy, in the case of Samuel G. Brown, aged 60, who pleaded guilty under had advice, and Ezekiel Porter, aged 19, who is dying, and David Collins. Smith says, in his letter to Grant, that Spotts well, one of the North Carolina men, is defiant, scorns pardon, and is studying law. Smith, however, suggests that these pardons should be postponed-until after the election, as it might be thought that the clemency was prompted by interested motives.’ What a comment does the foregoing telegram convey on republican institu tions/ Old ago and youth wasting away in Northern prisons at the fiat of an inflated usurper and political sports man. It is pleasant to know that the days of his reign are numbered. Blodgett. —A correspondent writes us as follows from Orangeburg, S. C.; ‘I saw Foster Blodgett a few days since at Newberry, S. C., where he is living, lie devotes his valuable time playing at billiards and driving fast horses, lie Keeps quite a number, and when he turns out for a big swell, brings out a splendid pair of blacics.— Ilis funds ho has deposited about in spots —made quite a deposit in a hank in that town, and has quite a large amount in a certain man’s safe in that village. ‘1 was told that he had tho assurance of Scott that he should not be molested ; that Smith might maKe his requisitions ami bed . It is evident that Foster lias plenty of money.’ The Last Rose of Summer. —Says the Christian Union : Senator Wilson lias returned from a political excursion to North Carolina and reports very favorably on the pros pects of carrying that State on the Ist, proximo. Naturally he takes a rose colored view of the situation, an! will not acknowledge that Greeley lias a shadow of chance. That he addressed ‘large and enthusiastic’ audiences we are quite able to believe, hut that he did not find a ‘Greeley Republican, as the Times declares, we are inclined to doubt. An inebriated man, walking along the streets at night, regarded the moon with sovereign contempt: ‘You needen’t be so proud, old fellow,’ he said, ‘you are full only once a month, and I am full every night.’ WILLIAM D.
