For wedlock’s bond I never sigh ;
In freedom's light I love to bask me ;
I wouldn’t marry 'om—not I
If twenty duchesses should ask me!
I never yearned for worldly pols,
I love to dwell alone and humble ;
To sow my buttons on myself,
And when I priok my fingers—grumble.
I own there’s one occasion, though,
When even my contentment fails,
I do not like the girls I know
To go and marry other males !
I know I should be quite at sea
At aught beyond a mild flirtation ;
And nursing “oherubs” is to me,
A most nnpleasant occupation.
Till true love's course shall smoothly ruu,
And while aufettered hearts are plenty,
It may be sweet to oherish one—
But I prefer to worship twouty !
But ah I the even rosy glow
Os my contentment sadly pales
When any of the girls I know
Will go and marry other males !
From gout I'm not entirely free—
But gout befit* my social Btation ;
I’m older than I used to be —
But that's the ease with all creation ;
So, why the damsels I adore,
Although they smile upon me sweetly,
Will go and fancy some ono more,
Is what perplexos me oompletoly !
Perhaps I feel no orusliing blow—
No gnawing pang my heart assails ;
But still I hate tho girls I know
To go and marry other uialos!

[Special telegram to the Richmond Dispatch. j
A Soducsor Hhot iu lilh Oell.
Manassas, Va., August 31.—James
F. Clark, the seducer of Miss Fanny
Fewell, was shot, and probably killed,
in the jail nt Brentsville, this morning
about 8 o’clock, by her brother, Body
Fewell. Mr. Fewell came up on tho
night truin from Lincyburg and got ofT
at Bristow station and walked over to
Brentsville, and on going to tho jaij
found the front door open. A black
boy, the only person present, told him
in which cell Clark was, and on going
there found Clark lying on his bed.
Seven shots were fired through the gra
ting of the cell door, one of them tak.
ing effect in Clark’s breast just below
the heart. Mr. Fewel retuined to Ma
nassas, and has surrendeicd himself into
the hands of the authorities. It is
thought Clark is dead by this time (11
o’clock a. m.)
The brother of the wronged girl has
tho undoubted sympathies of the public
with him, wondering why ho did not kill
her seducer before.
SECOND DISPATCH.
Brrntsv.llb, via Manassas Junction,
Va., August 31. —At about nine o’clock
this morning some men sitting on the
porch of Mr. Kincbeloe’s store, which
commands a view of the court house
and jail, discovered a man creeping on
his hands ann knees towards the front
door of the jail, which at that time hap
pened to be open. On getting to the
door he was observed to enter, but taking
him to be the brother of the jailor, the
spectators gave him no further thought
until in a very few minutes tiring was
heard in the jail; whereupon several
of the citizens ran from different parts
to the jail, and Major W. W. Thornton,
who was the first to arrive there, seized
the intruder, who proved to be Miss
Fewell’s brother, by the right arm.
Fewell had a pistol in each hand—one
supposed to be a navy pistol, the other
a smaller one. Major Thornton attemp
ed to drag him away and begged him
to stop, but Fewell told him to go away,
that he did not want to hurt him (Thorn
ton). The Major, however, did not
succeed in taking him away, as Fewell
bad his left arm bent inside of the iron
grated door, and with the pistol pointed
toward Clark, discharged another shot.
He then walked to the door, ran out and
jumped over the fence of the court green
and down into the woods, about a hun
dred yards behind the jail.
Medical aid was at once secured, and a
warrant immedfate'y issued for the ar»
rest of Fewell, who, in the mean time,
walked back into the village and drove
off to Manassas in a carriage which hap
pened to be here from that place.
Clark was at first placed in a debtor’s
cell, which is in the upper story of the
jail, but owing to some remark made by
him that he could easily get out, he
was yesterday morning taken and placed
in a cell on the ground floor and close to
the front door. It ap[etis that Fewel
had been up the Orange road putting up
lightning rods, and came down this
morning. He got off at Bristow and
walked to Brentsville unperceived by
any one until it was too late to prevent
this supposed fatal affair.
Clark thought that he had received
but one wound, which, on examination,
was discovered to have passed about an
inch below the left side of the heart and
penetrated the backbone. Upon sub*-
sequent examination, however the phy
sicians, Drs. Barbour and Leary, found
that another ball had entered the back,
hut so far have been unable to discover
its location. The doctors think that
he will die in the course of twelve hours,
as internal hemorrhage has taken place.
The following is the dying declaration
of the wounded man :
‘I was lying on the bed about half
asleep. I was aroused by hearing the
room door open. On looking I saw a
pistol, pointing through tho inside door,
in liody Fewel’s hand. I jumped up
and ran to the corner on the right hand
side of the door. As I was going to the
corner ho fired on me and missed me.
I ran to the corner on the other side of
tho door, and he shot at me again. I
saw him poke the pistol again through
the door, and I grabbed it. It was
about the size of a navy pistol. I tried
to wrest it from him, but*failed. He
then drew a smaller one, and with that
shot me in the breast. Just before he
fired tho last shot Major Thornton came
and endeavored to stop him from firing.
Fewel fired four times, but (hissed twice,
the balls entering the woodwork in the
side of the cell.’
The doctors are of the opinion that
both balls came from the larger pistol,
and not from the smaller one, ns Claik
supposes. Clark is perfectly rational,
hut is evidently sinking. Up to this
hour Fewel has not been arrested.
THIRD DISPATCH.
Manassas., Va., August 31, P. M-
Clark’s condition is very critical, two
shots having taken effect iu his body.
Body Fewel left here at five o’clock in
company with some friends to go before
Judge Nichol, who will be asked to ad
mit him to bail, any amount being offer
ed, Miss Fewel has not been informed
of the shooting. She has been in a very
nervous and excitable condition ever
since she arrived at homo, constantly
requiring the attention of a physician.
THE LATEST.
Manassas, Va., August 31, 9P. M
— Advices just received from Brents
ville, state that Clark’s condition is ea
sier. Dr. Simpson, his attending phy
sician, pronounces his wound not mor
tal, and says with proper care he will
stand a good chance of recovery. One
ball has been extracted ; the other is
still in him.
