Z.” Editor of the Journal— Dear Sir : A people is known by its representative—a cause hy its defender, is a rule which cannot be applied generally at the South since days ante bellum. For instance the people of McDuffie County, as a class, are intelligent, generous and liberal-minded; the successful establishing and permanency of their county is, with them, a com mendable and just cause and should be advocated and defended candidly, honestly and openly by pure, intelligent and patriotic men. That McDuf fie has such men laboring in her interest Ido not question, but that “Q. I. Z. ” —the presumptuous ignorant and malicious nincompoop—is of that or der I unhesitatingly deny, if he is to bo judged hy his communication in your lust issue. In the first place he is an egotistical ass, or ho would not have assumed, unsolicited, the respon sible and honorable distinction of appearing in public print “in behalf” of an intelligent, high minded people, as evidenced by the first sentence of his communication. In the next place he is an ignoramus, and a fool —ignorant of the Constitution of his State, and a fool for the lack of common sense. This is shown and made palpable when he quotes the following language from the Clipper of August 29th as an “excerpt showing the animus of the editor of the Clipper to the people of McDuffie county ‘ 'McDuffie will have to wait until another cen sus (1880) before she can hope for any represen tation.” Now, if there is any animus in that sentence the editor of the Clipper is not responsible for it.— The language is founded upon the spirit of the Constitution of the State, as expressed in Art in., Sec. 3, Paragraph 2, which provides that the “ap portionment of Representatives shall be made by the General Assembv after the taking of each cen sus.” The General Assembly which convened af ter the taking of the census of 1870 having failed to pass an apportionment bill giving McDuffie county representation, a similar bill cannot be en tertained, according to the Constitution, until af ter taking of the next census, 1880. The last par agraph of “Q. I. Z’s” communication stamps him in the minds of all intelligent men as an unscru pulous knave—one that would not hesitate to pen a lie to serve his purpose. The “editor of the Clip per” has never been before a nominating Conven tion, or sought to be nominated for the Legisla ture. The Constitution provides that electors not professions are alone eligible to the position of Representatives in the General Assembly. The accusation of “intrigue” I treat with greater con tempt than I bear anonymous scandal mongers. In conclusion, I say to the people of McDuffie that my opposition to the forming of McDuffie as well as all other new counties, is based upon higher grounds than personal ambition and purer motives than self aggrandizement. What I have heretofore written iu regard to McDuffie county was done in conscientious discharge of my duty to the County of Warren as the conductor of its coun ty organ. When the proper time comes I may, perhaps, show that “Q. I. Z.” in his anxiety to benefit and enrich himself, has lost sight of certain statutes re garding bribery, etc. chaß. e. mcgregor, “Editor of Clipj>er.” [Extract from the Macon Telegraph A Messenger.] We have tested its virtue personally, and know that for dyspepsia, billiousness and throbbing headache arising therefrom, it is the best medi cine the World ever saw.
