Grand Jury Presentments; We, the Grand Jury chosen andsworn for the August Term ot the McDuffie Superior Court, beg leave to make the following Presentments. We have, through appropriate com nutties, examined the records of the Or dinary and Clerk of the Superior Court, and as far as we are capable of judging, find them neatly and correctly Aept, in a manner refiecting credit upon those officers. We recommend that the Or dinary maie a distinction between the record of white and colored marriage license, by inserting the word “colored” after the names of colored parties, and that this be done from the beginning of the record. We find that the number of colored poll defaulters, for the year IS7I, was 4SS, and the number of white poll de faulters, for the same year, was 114, and I that the State and county default list, j including polls, amounts to S-'440.57. The Collector has issued executions igaiust all of the colored defaulters, and as now at woik on the white list, and will soon have them all in the bauds of the proper officers for collection. Amount paid Treasurer, 5G609.30 County portion of de fault list, 1293.33 Ordinary’s order reliev ing parties from double taxes. 125.2 G 55030.59 Amount levied, $8030.89. TREASURER’S BOOK.' Amount received from Treasurer, 56009.30 Amount borrowed, 1741,68 Amount from other sources, 415.00 Paid out as per vouchers, $8753.00 Paid to Ordinary 100.00 Paid note, 12.98 55765.98 $5705.98 We (iml the County will be in debt the first of January, 1573, about S4OOO, and the same amount levied for last year will raise over SSOOO, leaving bal ance in the hands of the Treasurer, the first day of January, 1573, of over SIOOO. Your Committee have had be fore them the books ol only one Justice of the Peace, Mount Auburn District, which they find correctly kept. We congratulate tiie County in having effi cient officers in the department which your Committee were directed to exam ine and report upon. Respectfully sub mitted. We further recommend, after consult ing the Ordinary, that the building of t ho Courthouse and Jail be given to Junes Knox, at his bid, or to any other contractor at the discretion of the Or dinary and Commissioners appointed, with the instruct oils to have them erected as soon as practiceble. We find the following portions of the public roads in bad order, to wit: The road by -J. M. Lazenby’s to Thomson has not been worked; the ford and bridges over the Greenesborough road at the Sweetwater Mills are in bad or der, almost impassable. Also, other portions of the roads in the County are n bad order, and could not be repaired on account of the dry weather, but will be repaired as soon as it rains. We further recommend, that the Or dinary appoint a Board ol Commission ers to examine the road Irom Thomson to the Greenesborough road, and also the ground over which the new road is proposed, and report upon the necessi ty of changing the same, with power to act upon their report. We further re commend, that the bridge on Germa ny’s cieek near Mt. Vernon Church, be put in good order. We also approve the action of the Ordinary in building bridges across the creek near Mrs. M. A. Hamilton’s Plantation. We also re commend that a bridge be built across Upton’s creek, between W. 11. Murray’s and Mrs. E. R. Seay’s, and the road to it be opened. We further recom mend that the Ordinary, when he con tracts for the building of new bridges, require o( the contractor a bond to keep the same in good order for live years fioin date of contract, without addition al pay. We return our sincere thanks to his Honor, Judge Gibson, for the efficient manner in which he has presided over the Court at the present Term : and al so to Solicitor General, Davenport Jac&son, for his polite attention to this body.
