HOME MATTERS.
J. L. W. M. HirJiway pays the highest mar
ket prices for cotton.
The Jocbsal.—The Journal will compare local
patronage with any paper in the State.
Quite an array of female beauty was noticeable
at the late Association. The McDuffie and Colum
bia girls came in for a good share of compliments. !
We are authorized to announce H. W. Young,
as a candidate for re-election to the Office of Tax j
Collector for McDuffie County at the ensuing !
election.
We regret to learn that Mr. Benjamin Harri
son's ginhouse was burned oh Monday evening, the
14th inst., by accident. The loss to Mr. H. is
about $2,500. About twenty bales of cotton were
burned with the house.
Maj. M. B. Kitrell has arrived with a car load
of horses and mules from Tennessee. We know
the Maj., and can vouch for the stock he brings to
this marke t. Go to Lansdale’s stable and see his
stock. He has brought some of the best stock
ever brought to this market.
Union Point Fair. —We learn from parties who
visited the Union Point Fair, that it was largely
attended and proved a decided success. Col. M.
C. Fulton, of this county, had on exhibition his
fine steed, Halcom, and bora away the finest pre
mium for the best Georgia raised stallion.
Judge Reese’s Communication. —The commu
nication of Judge Reese, in reply bo that of Hunt
George P. Stovall, will be found on our first page
in to-day's issue. The letters referred to in the
Judge’s communication, have been placed in our
possession, for the inspection of those who desire
to see them.
aurora. —Our town was visited on Monday
night by a beautiful lumen bore ale. We will ex
pect from our Northern exchanges glowing ac
counts of its splendors. A heavy frost, with a
alight erhst of ice followed,!' ties lay morning, and
rendered w-inter clothing decidedly pleasant as
well as fashionable.
Married. —On Thursday, October 10th, by the
Rev. W. F, Smith, Mr. James P. Johnson, of
McDuffie county, and Miss Indiana E 1 wards, of
Warren county.
W© congratulate Jimmie, because ho has secu
red a prize, and Miss Indiana has certainly entrus
ted her destiny and heart to a worthy, Christian
gentleman.
Personae. —Dr. Usry, of Glasscock county, was
in town on Monday last, shaking hands with his
many frien Is and ac pniatviess. If the Doctor
will m ike Thomson his home, we will pic Ige him
a "Warm welcome.
Dr. Med!iin, member elect, frvn Columbia
county to th * Le jislatare, was in attendance on the
Baptist Association.
We regret to learn that a serious accident oc
curs 1 near Wrightboro’ on Tuesday last by which
Elbert Cloud, a young colored man, was mortally
injured. Mr. A. L. Perry and Mr. E. E. Eunsdale
were training their horse;, for racing, Elbert < lou l
ridiULonsdale's ht Tr*“. Both hotses boiled
the track, the Lansdale horse dashing his rider
against a tree and crushing the skull near the
temple.
On*. Merchants.—Wo are gal 1 f > sc - * *W. our
merchants are all In i* i live, thrifty business.—
They have purchased large stocks of goods, an:l
are making rapid sales at low figures. Our town
is daily attracting the patronage of the surround
ing country, and bids fair at no distant day b> be
come a place of no mean importance. A more lib
eral-hearted, generous, upright set of gentlemen
than our business men cannot be found anywhere,
and we are perfectly willing to trust the future pros
perity of our town in their hands.
Fire Engine. —A subscription is going the
rounds in town, for the purpose of raising funds
to purchase a Fire Engine. We sincerely hope
that our citizens appreciate tho need of an engine
in our town, and each one will give freely, that
the enterprise may not f ail. There are a number
of active young men withfh the li nits of Tho n-
Bon, who would willingly join together and for m an
efficient fire company, that might save our town
in case of fire. All that is nee do lis the money to
purchase the engine and necessary accompani
ments, to render ns safe from the dangers of a
general fire. Let every one who owns a house iu
town give this matter serious though. The whole
town is built of the most inflammable kind of wr o l,
and should a fire, by any chance, bre *k out, it cer
tainly will, with nothing to check it, involve the
whole town in ruin. Our merchants have in store
the largest and most valuable stocks of goo Is th it
have, perhaps, ever been brought to this market,
and by refusing to contribute sufficient means to
purchase an engine may, some fine morning, find
their valuable stocks a heap of smoldering coals.—
Then your vain regrets will only add anew pang.
This is a serious matter, and we call on the think
ing men—those who have so much at stake—to give
jt a sober consideration.
Baptist Association. —The Association assem
bled in our town on Friday last, in fact a good
many of the clergy and delegates arrived on the
Thursday night trains. On Friday morning the
Association met at the Baptist Church, and was
called to order by the Rev. James Kilpatrick,
Moderator.
At 11 [o’clock the Moderator delivered a very
forcible and eloquent Introductory Sermon, from
the 17 Chapt. and 17 verse of John, to which the
congregation, listened with marked attention.
He is, comparatively, a young man, and one of the
best presiding officers we have ever seen, filling,
with credit to himself, and honor to the Church,
the chair of the loved and revered Dr. Mell. The
Clerk, Mr. Calloway, is a courteous, Christian gen
tlemau, well qualified to fill the O flee to which, !
we are glad to say, the Association re-elected hjm j
unanimously.
Mr. Kilpatrick was also re-elected Mo lerator
without opposition, an honor which he deserved.
There was a large crowd in atten lance on Sat-!
urlay, and on Sunday, really more than both
churches and Court house could accommodate,
and the sermons delivered were replete with sound
theology and practical christianty.
Our citizens gave the members of the Association,
and visitors, the warm-hearted, generous welcome
for which our town is proverbial, and extend them
in an invitation to visit us again.
r o Our Subscribers. —We hear many com
plaints from our subscribers at different places,
about the failure of the Mails in delivering their
papers. We assure all that their papers are reg
ularly mailed at this office, and if they are not sent
to their proper address, it is the fault of the Post
Office Department. The Post Master General, in
stead of m iking Grant speeches, had better
employ his time attending to the duties of his
office. If his appointees here, or elsewhere, are
negligent or incompetent, it is his duty to remove
them, and place men in office who are able and
willing to discharge tlieir duties.
If those, who are to blame, continue in their
course, they will hear from ns again.
New Ailvertisements.
Mr. J. H. Montgomery, No. 7 Main Street,
Thomson, is offering for aide as fine a stock of
general merchandise as was ever brought to thi3
market, and at prices to suit all customers. Look
to his advertisement and see what he has to sell,
and we can vouch that every line of goods there
mentioned is full end complete.
Mr. L. W. Flood, the Picture Man, adverties

his pictures, and can assure our readers that they
are good and cheap.
