IKCUCASE OF FA I iLG ~ .
The Bill tor the increase c>{ the salaries
<>f the I’re.’iffer.t, Vice-Preakfent, Mem
bers of Cabinet, Judges of Supreme
Coon, and laetafccrs of Congress has
been passed, and to this part of tie Radi
cal policy the Connecticut. Republican*
eiupitnti rally object, not becaoso the act
is an unneoeAsary or unwise appropriation
of tho public funds, but because their
party has already quite as rauah rascality
and extravagance ao it can conveniently
aarry, and this will render it still more
unpopular, and greatly endanger its suc
cess in future elections. There’* poll teal
virtue and honesty for yon.
The time has been when the honor
attached to these olSees was considered
ample reinuouution for trie services of
the ineu who v.ero so fortunate as to be
elected to till them ; but that was when
boucttty, miegrityauxl statesrnenaliip were
the tests of qualification, instead of per
.jury, njsadacity and “loilty .” If C in
gress had realty meant to carry out
their boasted policy of retrenchment and
reform, they should have com monied by
uduiiuintoriag to their own Ixidy a moral
cathartic ol nuCw out strength to expel
the odioutCsctUn of carpet-baggers, scala
wags, nogrots, bribers, bribe-takers and
petjuters, which now disgraces tho Gov- i
ermnont, so that honest men and patriots
would again, as in the post, consider the
honor and dignity of these various offices, !
together with a moderate salary, as a
sufficient reward for their time and labor. ;
Ac it is they have only repainted tlreir ;
“whited sepulchre” to dasw.it> and deceive
the public, while they offer an
reward for future rti-eality ami uu,hon
esty.
fio far as the intaeiiflo of tho t ahu ies
of these respect ivc officers is concerned,
abstractly considered, wo cannot ray
that we oppose it. The rapid growth
mid sipanuinn of our ao-caUed Republic, ;
and the increased imporbuieo and rtsipon- j
•ability attached to the high potations ;
which they occupy, demand i.alariea auf- ;
ficiently remunerative u> support them
with becoming dignity. Besides, wc urn
now, as wo hi.vc always bee., opposed ,
to cheap Judges, Legisialors, Govoru
nora, President*, or public Officers of
any kind. Wo think that the remunera
tion or emoluments should always be
romem-ainfe with the leepoluubiHly
ku. 1 tolerd requisite for the faithful and
efficient lUseharga of tiro duties apper
taining to each respective office. And
had the hit..* <’ ...rr tcoufiie and it.. ‘lf to u
reasonable inerrusdof future salaries, we
would have hud no opposition to offer.
But when they deliberately vote them
idea a certain amount as batik pay for
services which, at. and before their elec
tion, they agreed arid were even unxtous
to render' for i- ranch less sum. it icy place
themselves in a very awh ward and unevia
hle position before tho world—a position
which tiuuest men will not hesitate to
cundomu. Tlioexp ijo for the Sajthor.i

at present mi general, it is ftl Wwable and
even oonuiicmlablo to rccicvcd or take
anyf/ife*?, whether riglitiully or not, from
the general Government, is, in our opin
ion, rather flimsy.
We do not know what arguments or
reasons were advanced in favor of this
measure, but wo arc at a loss to Compiv
lieud how any Southern lh.moc.rat could
have given it support.

GEORGE WEST.
| From Chronicle and Sentinel.]
! Mercer’s walls are clad in mourning,
i Every mirthful spuai is hushed,
; Flowers of Spring the walls adorning,
Now lie faded, withered crushed,
And amid this wreck, this sadness
1 Death triumphant pits in ghidue/M.
! Ar.u within those walls so dreary
j Is the battle ground where Death
Comm to battle Life — now weary
i Os itsseorchiag, dying breath
j In that room round one that’s sleeping
iineel his friends in hopeless weeping.
; Through tii: window pano are beaming
I Golden rays of evening’s sun,
: Still the bay lies silent dreaming
1 As the grim and ghastly One
; Nears the seat of life so tickle,
| Clips the life cord vithliis tickle.
Then the sun seems growing brighter,
Haste to Death is beckiiirig now,
And the m .m grows light and lighter
As an Angel smoothes his brow.
Clone the body to her bringing
Now ascends the Angel singing ;
“Wfelcoir.*, George, U> bliss eternal;
Say farowel! to cv-u-y woe,
Welcome to this land where vernal
Zcphvr.i ever gentle blow ;
Where tin night can throw its shadow
O’er our LciuU to make theru sadder.
“Farewell, Father ! farewell, .Mother !
Do not weep your darling boy.
I’nrewwlf Sisters ; farewell, Brother!
George is in a land of joy ;
Ail tratiMgrc.'i.ucmi arc forgiven,

Disappcoriug in the distance

To the glittering existence—
