A Ballosn Voyage Aoross the At
lantic in Contemplation.
Pan.apnx.PHU, May 81.—It is now al
most a fixep fact that Professor John
Wise, Secretary of the meteorologioial
section of the Franklin Institute of this
city, will start from Boston Common on
July 4, me his aerial voyage across the At
lantia Mr. Washington H. Donmleon
he daring aeronaut, and two scientific
gentlemen, not yet aelected—although
there are many applicants for the adven
ture—will accompany him. Within a
few d«ys past the common 000 .cdl of
Boston have appropriated tha sum oi SB,
000 for the purchase of the materials for
the Balloon and for other neeeaaary ap
paratus. provided the Boston men of
aoienoe can be satis tied that the profes
sor’s theory is a plausible one. Profes
sor Wise says he can do this beyond all
question. He will make the journey of
8,000 miles in not more than seventy
hours and probably only sixty. His oon
fidenoa in the success of his venture is
baaad on the theory, whioh liia frequent
experiences ae on aeronaut havs proved
to be a true one, that the entire upper
etmoephere surrounding the earth moves
with tha revolution of the earth East ward
y. According to this, as soon as this
air-tide is struck by the balloon the air
ship will drift F.uropeward at the rate
of 100 miles and hour. But this immense
rata of speed will not be a source of peril
to the voyagers, for, as Professor Wise
svplsins, to the voyager the balloon, no
matter how fast it may go, seems to stand
still. Professor Wise does uot claim that
he can return across the Atlantic through
the air, hia theory only involving the
practicability of the voyage to the East
He will take a mail out with him which
he will engage to deliver at their desti
notion in three days, time or leas. The
air-ship in which this extraordinary ven
ture will be made will consist of three
balloons, one nearly three times as large
as the other two. They will be capable
of lifting 11,000 pounds, exclusive of
their own weight, basket, life-boat, Ac.,
of whioh latter, one fully equipped for an
ocean aeaident will be carried along.
The basket end its appurtansncee will be
something novel. It will resemble a cov
ered room, with a cellar, where the water
and stood for the trip will be stored. It
will have windows on all sides, and a
lime-stove fur hast and cooking, while an
aieetrie light will be secured at night by
means of a vaeum tube with platinum
tube at each end.— Oorrttputtdence of

A ".senms in the rural districts lately
gave her five-year-old hopeful an outfit
of fish tackle. Soon she heard a shout
from Willie, and running out found one
of her beet hens faat winding up the line
in her crop, whituer the hook had already
preceded it. Willie, observing the
troubled look of his mother, quietly re
marked : “Don't worry, mother. I

A serious charge was brought against
a school teacher in Illinois, the specifica
tions of which are; “1. Immairality !
2. Parshality! 3. Keeping disordly

The committeeman who wrote the charge
thinks of running the school himself next
quarter.”
Some questions very naturally suggest
themselves to an inquiring mind. Ama

with a plough before crops can be rais

Somebody has writen a work entitled
“Useful Hints for Ugly Girls,” and the

United States.
“Calf’s Head,” remarked the waiter,
quite innocent of any equivocal intent,
but when asked what the calf said he
very unreasonably took umbrage and de
clined further conversation.
