Messrs Editors:
Farming is at a very low ebb in this
section. The extreme wet weather lias
made onr farmers more backward with
their work this spring than for several
years past. Many of them have a good
portion of their corn laud yet to bleak ;
a few who are planting ridge land alto
gether have finished planting their coni.
But there are very few of this class.
Tlio majority of farmers iu this viciuity
have done very little towards preparing
their cotton land to plant. One old gen
tleman in this neighborhood, who is a
very close observer, says he lias never
seen a year but what there was enough
dry weather to make a crop. And ho
thinks if it is the will of I‘rovidence
there will be enough this year. You
meet a farmer now, and after passing the
usual compliments the first question is,
how are yon getting on farming ? He in
variably answers “j am not following
that business.” The land has not been
in wliftt you might call good order to
plow but few times since Christ
mas, The most of tlio corn that has
been planted was planted wlion the laud
was too wet, mid if the sun does not
shine on it in a few days it will sour and
rof. There were pretty good crops of
small grain sowed last year, which is
looking tolerably well.
rev. t. c. ROYJKIN,
of Atlanta, addressed the Sabbath
School at Lincoluton, on lust Friday,
Saturday and Snuday, and notwith
standing the inclemency of the weather,
there was quite a crowd in attendance
each day, and the liest of order pre
vailed. Ho certainly lnm a natural tact,
for commanding tlio attention of chil
dren. On Saturday night he had a lit
tle show for tlio amusement of tlio little
children. lie exhibited Bible scene a
mostly, nnd all were well pleased* with
the entertainment.
RUBRIC MISBTINO.
There was a public meeting of (lie cit
izens of this county yesterday for the
purpose of taking up a subscription to
aid the sufferers by the late tornado.
Owing to some cause there was not many
iu attendance. Wo learn the few who
were present subscribed very liberally.
Committees were appointed to take up
subscriptions over tho county. The suf
ferers have many sympathisers in old
Lincoln, and they will do all they can to
help them.
MARRIED vs. SINOLR LIFE. .
Not long since I reeieved a letter from
a very genial and clever friend of mine
who had recently married, and to show
you how lie appreciates the new life I
will add the following : “T., old fell.,
try it. There is truth in the saying, if
you are sick it will cure you. If you are
lazy it will make you smart. If you are
ugly it will make you pretty.” Ei hoc
genus o nine. If it will accomplish that
much good the remedy is worth trying.
Yours, &0., Tui.t.u’i.

Editors McDuffie Journal:
From tlio chaos and desolation which
hut a few days since disfigured the land
in this section, peace aud order, despite
the bad weather, are again slowly begin
ning to assert their sway. The heavy
and continued rains have so changed and
washed out the beds of several of ou,
creeks as to render crossing extremely
dangerous—especially to strangers. This
fact was realized by a very jiopnlar Lin
coln county physician who, yesterday,
drove into one of the aforesaid ford*
whistling—“ Mother may Igo out to
swim.” Ho realized that lie and his
horse were both “iu for a swim,” and
now says that lie thinks that creek needs
a bridge.
The surprising energy of our friends i
in Columbia, although Ifco weather will
not allow them to plant yet, lias not pre- \
vented them from doing much to recu
perate from some of the most sad results j
of the storm. The great secret is Unit j
they work and a m hit thcmselrcs. Their j
pride is of that high and independent |
type, and their true manliness is only j
equaled by their generous sympathy for i
their, friends, v
Since tlio storm two more of the ser- 1
viuitivou Mr*. Walton’s plantation have
died from their wounds. The rest are i
slowly recovering. The county authori
ties are moving, though as yet they have
done but very little towards removing
the obstructions from the rends, which,
at many points, arc almost impassible,
'l’he farmers living adjacent to the path
way of the storm have kindly opened a
way through their plantations. “An in
telligent contraband,” a preacher, has
revealed to his congregation the cause of
the storm, lie says that “some niggers
on do coast notch a uiHrmnid aud refused,
at its request, to put it back iu de water,
and date do reason of de storm, and data
wut makes it lain so.” His explanation
is received as orthodox by all colored
troops in this region.
In one respect Thomson, with ninny
other places that I could mention, would
do well to imitate their Kiokce neigh
bors. I allude to Temperance. The
Good Templars organized through a por
tion of this county about four years ago,
and nowhere iu the State has more been
achieved. The ladies have done much
to make the work a success and have cer
tainly succeeded far beyond the expecta
tions even of tlio most sanguine. It
would require a long letter to tell even a
portion of what lias been accomplished. |
.Suffice it to say that thp young men lmve,
as a class, faithfully kept their pledges,
and a very decided improvement, in all
that refines and elevates is the result.
1 will reserve for a member of the Or
der a more elaborate and minute account
of what has been accomplished.
