Many of you are in arrears for sub

small amounts, which y m can easily pay
withoat inconvenience, and the agregate
of which would greatly assist and en

of money matters, we have worked along

stances paying your postage, trusting to
your honor to pay us in the Fall. That
time has now arrived ami we respectfully
but urgently re pleat you to pay the

Epizootic.
This much-dreaded horse disease,
tuoiigii less fatal m its affects, is again
quite general throughout the country
and may at uuj time make its appearance
iu our section. It is said that rest or
Tcrv moderate exercise, protection from
ram and cold, wetting the grain and
provender, and cleansing the nostrils
frequently with the lather of carbolic
soup, are usually all that is necessary to
effect a cure.
A correspondent of the Atlanta Jhr
ald gives the following simple reme y :
‘■’Take brown or black mustard, grind
it, and give a teaspoom'uli scattered over
the horse’s bran-mash or chopped food.
Give tliis much at each feed. It serves
to eut the polegui, and give quick relief.”
Accident Iu Lite Kail road.
Ou Sunday evening last it was adver
tised that Howe’s London Circus would
leave Augusta for Macon via Thomson.
Now Thomas Hams,(colored) had not
seen his wife for some time, and conclud
ed he would go with the show as tin- as
Thomson. When the train arrived here
Mr. Howe forgot Thom, was on board,
in fact lie may not have known it, and
having no other buisiues which claimed
his attention at tins poult Ins train wab
dashing by at the rate of 20 miles per
hour. Thom, didn’t want to go any fur
ther, and just us the train was opposite
the crossing he squared himself, took
sight at a cross-tie, and it is thought if
it had not been for a box car loaded with
ootton he would have knocked the track
to pieces.
He has not been able to see his wife
yet.

An tC.-irU!ii«takc Shock.
Just at tou o’clock on Monday night
almost our entire p-opniuiiou were star
tled by a dull; rumbling sound followed
by a terrible quivering of the strongest
buildings. At first the noise resembled
that of a slowly-moving train of cars, but
it increased in violence until every one
was convinced it was something super
natural even before the buildings began
t a shake. There are different opinions
iu regard to the direction whence tii
sound came, but we ;,!*■ inclined to leij i
upon the judgment of Lev. \V. X. Hsmii

and says he thinks the sound was from :

from Atlanta, 'union Point, Athens and !

At the meutiou of the name of Gen.

only difference being that Washington

folly for our conquerors to attempt to

great Leaders in their struggle for liberty
or their convictions of the justice of the

The Richmond papers inform us that
the State of Virginia proposes to erect
an equestrian statute of Gen. Lee at
Richmond, and as a liuoloua to raise the
necessary funds, every .State officer and
employee from the Governor down,
agrees to set apart one day’s pay for that
purpose.
But the memory of Leo belongs not
alone to Virginia, but the whole South ;
aud why should not Georgia contribute
her mite m honor of the noble dead r
Our State officers should not wait to be
urged, but should act voluntarily,

DR. FED EDMONDS,
: a highly respectable citizen of this coun

li.eei.iilaristn.
The frequent and increasing losses in
flicted upon the white people of Gvorgia
by the torch of the incendiary is truly
appalling, and particularly is this trim in
regard to the destruction of gin-houses.
Nearly every exchange comes to us with
the report of the burniug of one or more
of these buildiugs, with machinery, cot
ton, Ac, The Savannah iViicn reports
the destruction by life of one hundred
gin-houses in the State, from September
Ist, 1875, tliree-fourtlis o f which were
tilvd by incendiaries. Our own section !
iu particular has suffered severely, and
the laws seem powerless to afford pro
tee; ion. It is such ail easy matter to
tire a gin-house containing lint cotton,
that the average fieevlmnn, laboring un
der some real or imaginary wrong, can
not resist the temptation to wreak a
dastardly revenge ou its owner. It is a
great pity that our Legislators, in their
Wisdom, cun not devise some law to pre
vent this growing evil.
It is sometimes the case, however, that
these flies result from accident or care
lessness. Upon this subject the Consti
tutionalist lias this valuable suggestion :
Thousands of cotton gins are needless
ly injured, if not entirely ruined, by one
single cause. That cause is permitting
moat or lint cotton, that is cotton that
has been once ginned, to be mixed with
seed cotton and pass through the saws
a second time. Such lint cotton catches
in the teeth, clogs the saws, dulls the
teeth, mid bends or breaks them. If al
so bends or breaks tbe ribs, wears the
boxes, and strain* the whole gin so as to
make it produce a bad sample, and speed
ily becomes almost worthless. It like
wise increases the draft no as to distrust
the mules propelling the gin, and creates
so much friction as often to Set the gin
house on fire. Thus ran be explained
the burning of uuuiy gin houses by tin*,
supposed spontaneous combustion of
cotton.

A Beautiful Woman.
In a neighboring village there lives a
young lady who, two yeers ago. was nu ob
ject of pity to all who knew her. From a
little imprudence at an improper time, she
became irregular, and was the victim of sup
pression in all its horrors. Such were the
ravages of the disease, she was miserable
ami unfit for social enjoyment. After try
ing many remedies, andpaying much money

; bottles of Regulator. .She improved after
taking the first, before taking the second
; she became sound and well. Now, two
