Dr. R, C. Johnson, of this place, met
withs serious accident on Saturday lasi,
the particulars of which, os we ate ha
formed, are substantially is follows:
Himself and wife were in a buggy, on
their way to attend the centennial meet
ing at Brier Creek church. At the time
of the accident tbe portion of the road
over which they were passing was down
bill and rather rongb. Some distance
in rear yontig Mr. Story was driving a
mule to a buggy. In descending the
bill Mr. Story’s harness broke and the
buggy ran up on the male, frighten
ing him so that he rnshed forward and
became entangled in the hind wheel of
Dr. Johnson’s buggy. The Doctor
stop|>ed bis buggy and seised the mule
by the bridle until Mrs. Johnsou could
alight. Then he attempted to get out of
the buggy himself, but, as he did so, the
male oommenoed floundering and strug
gling, and jerked him cut on the ground.
He toil upon his head and face among
the stones in tbe road, and received a
number of severe and serious injuries.
There was a terrible gash over the right
eye, the right olieek and eye were badly
bruised, and his right arm very much
injured. In addition to these it is
believed that ho received some serious
internal Injuries. He was insensible for
tome time, bnt recovered sufficiently to
be removed to the residence of Mr. A. J.
Story, where he yet remains, under the
skillful medical attentions of Dr Gibson.
We are glad to stato that according to
our latest information, the Doctor is
improving, anil it is thought he will soon
be well again.

McDXJFFIE WEEKLY jOU K N L.-~-September 5, 1877,
Ditiwb Bixtioia
On Tuesday evening of last week.
Rev. R. W. Bighorn, Presiding Elder of
tbia District, preached at the Methodist
eburoh in Thomson. We had not the
pleasure of bearing tbe sermon, but learn
from those who were present that it was
marked with that earnestness sad seal
which are characteristic of bis ministra
tions.
On Wednesday evening the same pul
pit was filled by Rev. W. T. Hamilton,
the former Pastor of tbia cbnrch, bnt
now in charge of the Oreeneeboro’ cir
cuit. The subject of bis discourse was
I the love of Jeans tor each and all of the
I human family; and, although suffering
I from extreme hoarseness, he held the
attention of tbe congregation to the end
of his earnest and fervid sermon.
On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
evenings the Rev. Mr. Chaudoin preach
ed in the Baptist church in this place.
In onr opinion there is not a more elo
quent and impressive minister in the
denomination than Mr. Ohandoin. Clear,
pointed, forcible, and, at tbe same time,
pathetic and pnrsuasfve, his sermons
always leave an abiding impression up
on tbe minds and hearts of thonghtful
bearers.

—Speaking of the new Constitution,
the Oaectte gives it a sensible endorse
ment ss follows:
"We cannot vote against or give onr
influence against the adoption of an
instrument merely because everything in
it is not in accordance with our views.
The Constitution, as a whole, is good,
and it is certainly a vast improvement
open the organic law under which we

—The Baptist chnrch in Washington
is enjoying *a considerable revival of
religion.
—We cell this a most singular freak of
good and bad luck : Messrs. Moore A
Kendrick, who are engaged in the mill
ing business just across the river, in
Taliaferro oounty, are also jointly inter
ested in hog raising—that is, the hogs
are fed at the mill and each party pays
one-half the oxpenses, though the hogs
belonging to Mr. Moore are differently
marked from those of Mr. Kendrick.—
Now, s short time since, the hogs were
taken with the cholera, which disease
killed every one of Mr. Kendrick’s hogs,
and Mr. Moore lost not one.
—William, Johnson, colored, has been
sentei ced by Wilks* County Court as
follows: For stealing melons, four
months on chain gang; assault ami
battery, six mouths, snd for stealing a
hat, six months—all at one term.
—Three negroes, Sumter, Silos, and
Felix O'Neal went serenading last week,
and got into a fight over a I ottlo of jam
same fair dame gave them. O'Neal shot
Sumter in the back of the head, and
made his escape. Sumter is not quite
dead yet.

sixteen to the Methodist church.
—Mr. and Mr*. Walter Scott have
returned from their European tour.
—Miss Anna Dardin's illness has as

death.
—Some frolicsome children got to

last week, which brought down s shower
of plastering upon them. No serious
injury resulted.
—A horse ran sway withs buggy near
Warrentou last week, throwing Mrs.

BrirrCrerk Centrnniak
The Baptists of Brier Creek church, in
this county, celebrated the centennial of
their organisation an Friday, Saturday
and Sabbath last, with appropriate
religions service* and impressive ceremo
nies. For more than one hundred years,
with all their vicissitudes and changes,
these faithful Christians have met aud
worshiped st the altar erected so long
ago, auJ, from generation to generation,
have continued firm and steadfast in the
faith of their fathers.
For the purpose of obtaining a correct
and authentic history of the church from
ita organisation to the present time, a
Centennial Committee. oonNiating of
Messrs. W. B. B. Canon, chairman, and
Samuel Hart, A. J. .Likina, Mr., and J.
A. Mathews, was appointed, who pre
pared an interesting report, which ana
read at the 3 o'clock service on Friday
and Saturday afternoon*, and from which
the following facta are derived.
In 1775 the Bars. Joseph Bnnon and—
Franklin commenced preaching in a
little aehoolbowse about one mile from
the present house of vorabip; end from
this humble beginning has grown the
present bugs, flourishing and influential
church. In January, 1777, a building
was steeled and the congregation regu
larly orgaained into a society. Rev. Jo
seph Bnraou wan the the first pastor, end
> continued to serve in that capacity for
about twenty years, when he was suo

I repairs were made upon toe chnrch
bnilding; and, as it was long before the
days of nail factories and railroads, the
! good pastor, himself a blacksmith, forged
tbe nails for holding tbe ceiivig to the
walls.
The records of the first twenty years
of tbe chnrch were unfortunately de
stroyed by fire, and the events which
they embraced had to be supplied from
tradition and the memory of ged citi
zens. The soooeeding records, however,
are complete. The church has had
twelve pastors, twelve clerks and eighteen
deacons. Rev. Aaron Adkins, now
deceased, served aa pastor twenty-six
years, daring which time tie baptised
one hundred and eighty-six persons.
Rev. T. J. Pilcher, is tbe preseat pastor,
sod the church is in a prosperous and ]
flourishing oondition.
Very large crowds of people attended
the services on Saturday and Sunday.
Rev. W. I*. Killpatrick opened the ser
vices Friday afternoon at S o’clock, at
which time a portion of the report of tbe
Centennial Committee was read. Sat
urday at 11 o’oloek. Rev. Dr. Tharpe
preached to the people, and at 8 o’clock
the remainder of the Committee’s report
was read. The Sabbath forenoon servi
ces were conducted by Rev. W. L. Eill
fatrick, and Rev. Dr. Tharpe preached
again in the afternoon. All of these
sermons were excellent specimens of
pulpit oratory, and were.dalivsreff'vritlr
much oaant'Ktness and fervor.
Quito a number of distingniahed min
isters were in attendance daring the
tbe meeting, among whom, in addition
to those already mentioned, were Rev-.
T. B. West, J, H. Htocktoo, Josephus
Hillman, J. W. Ellington and A. L.
Hillman.
When it becomes necessary to raise
funds for any charitable or benevolent
purpose, it is difficult to find a more
competent man for the bnsineas than
Mr. Chaudoin, and lie never acqnittod
himself with more ability and success
than on last Sabbath, when he appealed
to the generosity of the c-ngregation for
funds to repair the church building. The
response to his eloqnent appeal was
prompt and libera', and about S9BIOO
were subscribed, which, together with
about $500.00 heretofore contributed for
tbe same purpose, will put the edifice in
substantial and handsome oondition.—
The name of every contributor, however,
small the donation, was entered upon
the records of the chnrch, so that should
ever nnother Centennial meeting lie held,
those who ussisted in the good work may
be known and remomhered. There is
hardly a probability that even the yeung
ost infant who wss present will live to
witness another such occasion ; bnt let
us hope that the bread there cast upon
the waters may lie found again after
many days.
