One of its most interesting failure* is
the puli ical .on of original serial stories,

We bix that a number of newspaper*
in tins District arc suggesting Judge
(Mosul for Congress at the next election,
if not merely complimentary, tlinse sug
gestions, in our opinion, do great injus
tice to that gentleman, and present him
in a false light before tlie people. The
public life of Mr,,Stephans, our pi cant
lli plist'iitative, ia too well known, mid
hi* great and noble aetu of patriotism
and statesmanship are too deeply im
pressed upon the heart* of his country
men lo be easily erased, or to blind ti mil
to the fact tluil, however worthy other
imp rants may be, hi t conservatism,
riillifnlness, political honcuty and won
derful intellect render him hy far the
most prominent ami influential ltcpre
sciitativc from the South. Often has his
political wisdom, and his broad and con
ciliatory eoiioßptiotM of a o n titntioiuii
repiihlioiMi government allayed llernc aini
hitter eoffcat* in the Federal council*,
and produced toleration, if not actual
harmony between the auctions. His
very name i* n "tower of strength" to
any canso ho may espouse, and a few
words from his lips carry with them to
the Northern heart- more weight than the
combined oloipu nce of the entire S utb
ern delegation.
Tho cry that Mr. Stephens is tm old
and infirm to discharge the duties < f his
office, that lie Ims outlived his tisefol
noiis, and sliimld retire in favor of a
younger and more vigoioua man, is n
false a* it in transpurent. llis very preu
cnoo in Washington, yes, oven his faunl
iar crutch, leaning agah st his vacant
chair ia the embodiment of eloquence,
intellect and patriotism.
There lire a number of worthy, able
men in this District, who are competent
to repreuent ns in Congress with honor
and credit [ but, to fill successfully even
a small portion of the wide gap which
Mr. Stephens' uhsouca would oh-nt-, hi,-
successor must indeed be a marvel of
wisdom, eloijucnoo and political sagac
ity.
Ti eao facts, aud tho many noble deeds
which render illustrious the public career
of the “Great Commoner," are welt
known to .fudge Gibson, and no doubt
meet bis hearty oomo'.eudatiou And,
while Judge (Ibsen's patriotism and
sense of duty would forbid him to dr
oline any public position worthy of his
talents mid acknowledged abilities, to
übioii hia conutiymau might call him,
wo do not bi licVß tp it ho will p-rwi
over-ti-alons friend,-.t to place hitu in >-
bigoufaht*to Mr. Stephens, or that b"
oven desires to supplant that great states
man in the office which ho has so king
filled and is yet filling with so much
credit to himself mid honor hi his Dis
trict, liia State, and tho win ie country.
Should lie oppose Mr. Stephens, it may
uot only imperil the Democratic repre
sentation of this District, hut it will
certainly alienate trie da who, under
other circumstances, would give him a
lieurty support.
Agaiu wo say that the friends of Judge
Gibson are doiug him an injustice in
urging, or oven suggesting his name for
Congress at this time. Our understand
ing Ims all the while been, that lie would
uot antagonize Mr. Stephens 'or Con
gress, but would accept a re-election to
the office of Circuit Judge, which ho
now so ably and worthily tills; and for
this office, or for any other he may desire,
lie will receive a strong support from
this section, provided his election does
uot deprive the oouutry <xf the intellect,
wisdom an 1 experience < f our great tU-p-
Mseutativv.
This, of coarse, is written under the
supposition that Mr. will be a
candidate for re-election. Should lie
daoline to ag.du servo his people, the
(piastion of Judge Gibson's candidacy
will ba presented iu anew ami far more
favorable light, and many who will not
vote for him, or any other man in the
District, ugaiuut Mr. Stephens, wi 1 give
him a lMsu-ty support.

We bail a splendid ruin on Sunday

as they cuo look, although tlie cut-worms

farmers are working with more vim t; an

This, 1 think, is owing to 'he fact that
they have hud ;o hay less corn and meat
than usual.
The prospects lor better t.mes in this
