The Republican papers ure perfect
ly silent alxiut the rebellion in Kau

Inmation and are pushing into forbid

that rebellion against the sntliority
of tlie United States was located a
few miles south, every ltepub'iean
organ in the oouutry would lie bel

The organs ure completely out of
patience with Senator Urnoe and Fred
Douginas. Not only have both of
these distinguished colored men ad

from the South, hut Senator llruoe
has shown such a disposition to ener
getically investigate that disgraceful
affaij of the Freedniau’a flsnlt that
lie ia already accused of “doing an
injury to the Republican party."
It ie said that an astonishing num

A member of the Cabinet lately re
marked that in ease of a change of
administration from Republican to
Democratic, the turning out of 7,000
clerks would fill Washington with
paupers. Among the clerks are six
ty-one alumni of Yale, thirty-live of
i’nnoeton aud thirty of Dartmouth,
besides a Urge but uoaaccrtaiued

Editor Journal :
For the benefit of the com in unity
aud acolal welfare of the village of
Linoolnton, I beg leave to make a few
remark*. It is a case of common oc
currence, on entering the stores of
this place, to sec a lolling group of
idle peraous seated around on benches,
boxes, nail kegs, and even monopo
lising the counters of the nicrolinpta,
deluging the lately swept floor with
spittle and tobaoco quids, and load
ing the surrounding atmosphere with
unrefined and low conversations. La
dies, while shopping, not unfreqnenl
ly call, and doubtless as soon as pos
sible retire, embarrassed and dis
gusted, to seek the more invitiug
scene aud congenial atmosphere of
out of doors. To this class of per
sons l would say that this is great in
justice to the merchant, whose better
nature keeps him from ordering you
out of his house.
It ia certainly offensive to the re
fined tn b-s of ladies aud gentlemen.
It nuinot possibly promote moral
or social culture, either in yonrselves
or others; but, ou the contrary, it ui
bwnefully degrodiug to the morals,
and is the broadest road to idleness,
vice and rowdyism. It is a relief to
the mind, when wearrled with work
and prolonged study, to redox itself
iu social conversation; but let that
oouversatiou he chaste aud instruct
ive, not low and degrading. Vain
indeed will be the effort of pureuts to
instill into the uiinds of their chil
dren thoughts of purity aud ideas of
the true, the beautiful and good,
when they permit them to atteud
these gathering- aud breath in the
obnoxious contagion of these “loafer’ 1
meetings.”
It is earnestly hoped that these
! topics of trash and vile nonsouse, no
I oommouiy discussed at village stores,
will bo exchanged for sudjeot- ot
some true merit, fraught with more
interest both to tint individual w and
community at large, aud more pro
