DEATH OF BISHOP PIERCE.
The recent continued lllnena and iuereaa
ing teehlenena of tbo great Hiabop bad, to
aatiiu extent, pri>ered the public for the and
annonueemeut ot hid death, which all knew
could not long be delayed; and yet no event
for many yearn put baa arnuaed mioh pro
found and nuivcrsel aorrow. Hid lent tuin
iatcrial lalwir tvaa a Hormon delivered in
Thoiuaon, Angnat 17, in the iutereat of Ibe
Auguata Dfatriet High School. Jteluruiug
to Ida home, ''Huuahinc," near Spur In,
Hancock enmity, the combined elleeta of
age, bodily affliction* and arduoiiH labnra
in the eanae of the Maater overcame him.
Ho lingered until !l o’clock on Wedueaday,
September 4, when he quietly and peaceful
ly breathed hie teat, retaining to tho au
pnmin moment hid Intellectual clearnom,
anil an unwavering fqilh in tho Christian
religion, which bad been the inspiration
end glory of his life aud his labors.
The funeral eervieea were held in Sparta
on Friday, lu tho presence of uu immense
concourse of people. [) r . A. G. Haygood
delivered the funeral sermon, and Drs. J.
11. MoFerriu, Fetter, Hass, Mann, Key,
J, E. Evans and ltev. Mr. Htoodlove assist
ed in the solemn aud impressive services.
Among the many telegrams of sympathy
and sorrow, waa the following sent by Dr.
Talmage, of Brooklyn .
“Thousands of good people at the North
sympathize with the sorrow at Sparta to
day. A bright light has not lieeu extin
guished hut raised to a higher orbit to shine
with n more glorious brilliancy. They that
•rn many to righteousness shall seo the
stars for ever and ever." So has passed
away and hus been buried out of our sight
the truest, honiwtcst. bravest, liest man I
have meiaraougmeu. To-nightMioead, soft
moonbeams will fall down upon anew
uisde grave, in whiult sleeps till the ream
lection morning tho Issly of the Chiristliest
man Georgia ever saw.
In the d<th of Bishop Pierce, say* the
Constitution, the Christian world lows oue
of it* brightest ond puiiost lights, aud the
AletlikKlist obmoh oun at Ha most devoted
nud illustrious bishops.
Gifted with mnrrflom alorjnenco. of
splendid permui and ability, thoughtful, In*
duMtrious and comprehensive, the world hail
littlo that was bright or alluring that it did
not offer to him when he began hi* public
life, In a worldly career, Bishop Pierce
would have achieved great and lotting dis
tinction. But he wedded himself to the
church, and with singular fidelity and de
votion ho has served her for moro than half
a century. A* a pulpit urator, he was in
comparable* and one of his sermons won
from Macaulay the praise that it was the
fluent specimen of English he had seen from
any American. Asa bishop, he was the
*onl of dignity and of devotion. It is tho
fashion of Um world to believe that no man
lives wbfNo plu* cannot W filled, and the
Almighty cen inspire men to take up the
unfinished work of those who fall by the
wayside. But it dots scum, in the hour of
Wreaveuieut, that the loss sustained by the
Methodist church in the death of Bishop
Fierce is irreparable.
We heard hiut once, in a superb eulogy
on Dr. Allen* the Chinese missionary, say
that the light of his life would live long af.
ter his death* as the light that streams from
far distant stars shines for ages after the
stars have been blotted out. What lie thru
said worthily of his colleague iu the church,
the church can say this moiuiug of him.
Though he is dead, and him entered into
the blessed kingdom of the Lord* the work
he has done will li>e after him, aud the
light of his life will illumine the church
long after his name shall be but a memory,
and his dfvotiou a tradition that mothers
will whisper their children as a benedic
tion and a blessing.
