Of course Mr. Cleveland's selec tions are not approved by those who preferred and expected others to be called to these important positions; but, in the opinion of all disinterest ed persons, the Cabinet is a good one, and will reflect honor upon the Administration. A fow condensed facts of their history may be appro priate. Mr. Bayard, in the estimation of many, is considered the foremost statenian of his party. He is fifty seven years old, aud is the third of his family to ocoupy seats in the U. 8. Senate. His grandfather, liis fath er anil himself have all been distin guished members of tho Senato. His father and himself wore for a while Senators from the same Slate at the same time, which is tho only case of the kind on record. Daniel Manning wns born in Al bany, N. Y., Aug. IC, 1833, and has worked liis wav to eminence from the position of errand hoy in a news paper office. He is a thoroughly successful business man and one of the leaders of his garty in his State, but bus never held uny offico until the present ti*ie. Mr. Kndicott is 58 years of ago aud is a member of a pi ominent Massa chusetts family, tiis grandfather having been Secretary of tho Navy tiudor Jefferson. Ho is a distin guished lawyei*#d a leading Demo crat in Now England. Mr. Whitney was born in Massa chusetts iu 1831), aud for a number of years has been a prominent la>v yei and party leader of New York. Ho is the son-in law of Senator Payne, of Ohio lie distinguished himself during the prosecution of the Tweed ring in New York, aud won tho permanent confidence of Mr. Tilden. Mr. Lamar was born in Putnam county, Ga., Sept. 17, 1825. His brilliuut career as soldier ami states men is too well known to need repe tition. He is tho brainiest mau m tho Cabiuot. Mr. Vilas was born in Vermont, July (5, 1841), but has been a distin guished lawyer and Democrat of Wisconsiu for many years. Ho lias always refused office until appointed to his present position. Mr. Garland was born in Tipton county, Toiin., in 1832, but has been a resident of Arkansas nearly all liis life. He served iu both the House and Senate of the Confederate Con gress, and was elected to the U. S. Senate in 18C7, but wai not allow ed to tako Lis scat. He was Gov ernor of Arkansas in 1874, and again sent to the U. S. Senate lit ttie expi ration of his term as Governor. He is regarded as ihe ablest lawyer in Congress. BARNETT ITEMS ■ Y WANUimKH.
