mother while she went to the field.
By some means the child’s clothes
caught on fire, and after running
around in the house, he run out iuto
the public road, where he was soon
overpowered by the flames, and died
from the burning about two hours
afterwards.

—Since my last report the small
grain crops have improved wonder
fully, especially the wheat. The
coin crop is about all planted.
—I was shown several ears of up
land corn, a few days ago, raised by
Mr. Joel Perry. r J he ears were re
markably long, the grains • very
white, narrow and thin and almost
an inch in length. The seed of this
corn was sent to Ma Perry by an
old Alubaina friend, and he lias nam
ed it the “Alabama Sling” va iety.
—I attended the performance of
the Autbur Love Comedy Company
in Thomson, and do not hesitate to
say that it was the most laughable
entertainment I ever witnessed. 1
advise ali of your weakly, nervous
citizens, who do not wish to laugh
themselves to death, to keep away
from this Company. I wish the
Company much success and hope
the “Widow Walker” may get mar
ried.
I have refrained from giving the
ingredients of Jim Mandeville’s fa
mous smallpox disinfectant, and will
not divulge the secret now, but will
give lhe opinions of a few experts.
Dr. Rogers didn't think that it was
dangerous. Mayor Ivey was confi
dent that it contained combustible
materials, while Joe Johnson de
clared that the stuff was clearly a
fizzieal blunder..
—Jim Johnson and Tom Pilcher
weut fishing a few days ago, but in
a short time their bait gave out and
they had caught no fish. They
scuffled a: ouud and found a large
black bug and hitched him by the
gabe end to their hook. Then they
sat down, both holding to the pole,
and patiently waited to catch a
whale, but got no bite. Fiually
they concluded to examine their
bait. To their astonishment the
hug was much larger than when
they put him on the hook, so they
cut him open aud found that he had
been fishing himself and had caught
and swallowed a half dozen min
nows. The young men looked at
each other iu silent disgust. Then
they went homo resolved never logo
fishing in Maddox creek again as
long as ihey live.
