In the trial of Mr. W. H. Roberts in
Angusta last wiek, Judge Roney dis-
CuMed the writ of habeas corpus. Im

taoltargo the prisoner, but allowed him
to appeal to the IT, S. Circuit Court, fix

Twq horrible tragedies eeourred in
tibia State last week. On Thursday
night, iu Butler, Jesse Cook, a eolored
preacher, becoming enraged at ids wife,
knocked her down with an ttxe, and,
placing his foot on hor throat, heat out
her brains with the deadly instrument,
fa Macon, ou Friday morning, W. If.

killed his wife and then killed himself.
The Mas* assigned for this terrible

Was oi sized by her depraved oouduot, and
adopted this mode of ondiug their exis

The rnmofa of the serious defalcations
of Mr. Jno. L, Stovall, book-keeper of
the Georgia Chemical Works, of Augus
ta, are unfortunately coufiimed. Tho
full utaouut of his defalcation, it ia cal
culated, will reach 840,(100, for which
Geu. M. A. Stovall, Ins uucia, is res
ponsible, and which, it is feared, will
ruin him financially. An indiotment
has lieeu found against Mr. Jno. L.
Stovall, but he, alter surrendering ail
of his property to Uie Chemical Works,
has left the country. Speculations iu
futures, it is said, caused his ruin.
Much sympathy ia expressed for Geu.
Stovall, who ia one of tiie most promi
nent and respecter! citizens of Augusta,
and whose only fault wis his implicit
confidence of his nephew. The stand
ing and credit of the Chemical Works
are not affected by this nufertnnate
affair.
