Mr. Charlie Just was arraigned
before the County Court on Monday
charged with stealing a quantity of
amalgam at Tatham's gold mine,
but the pro*eeation tailed to make
a case even of reasonable siipirion
against him, and ha was discharged.
—Rev. J. A. Gargile, of Steven
son, Aa, a minister of the Advent
Baptist faith, preached a series of
sermons in this place last week. We
do not, of.course, venture an opin
ion as to the orthodoxy of his doc
trine, but all who heard him agree
that hs is a man of ability, and that
his discourses wore very interesting.

meeting services. Everybody is cor

the residence of Mr Juo. M. Curtis,
on Monday night, and was well at
tended, notwithstanding the inclem
ent weather. The next meeting will

The receipts of cotton at this

I —Rev. J. T. Lowe, recently ap
| pointed to the Thomson circuit,
| opened his ministerial labors at tbe
Methodist church in this place on
j Sunday last. 'The weather being
quite inclement the congregation
was not as iarge as it otherwise
would have been, but was deeply in
terested and very attentive to the
excellent discour-e of the preacher.
His tone of delivery is conversation
al rather than declamatory, his lan
guage chaste, scholarly and fluent,
the points of his discourse clearly
defined and earnestly expressed.
Mr. Lowe baa very favorably im
pressed tbe people of hia new
charge, and his labors among them
for the ensuing ytur will no doubt |
result in n. ti h gooj.

many new departures in the way of
progress inaugurated by the present
Council, and for which Mayor Dur
ham and his coadjutors desoive the
thanks of the people.

Died-
At the home of her grandfather,
in Burke county, Miss Cieo Ha: din,
of McDuffie eo'unty. She was a
member of the Baptist church a
Silver Run, and passed away in the
full triumph of faith. A gentle spir
it lias gone above, leaving many sor
! rowing f ■ iends. None kuovv her but
Ito love her. Frinuds she had many;
eueuiies none. • •
Itev John Hudson died at the
residence of his mother-in-law .Mrs
Hi.icry Langford, in this county, on
Friday night lust, ihe 11th instant

; last stages of consumption, and was
carried to tho resideuce of Mrs.

Mrs. J. 0. Wiley, wife of Mr. Al
bert Wilcv, died of dropsy at the
home of her husband, m Wrights
boro, this county, on Friday morn
ing last, and was buried in the
i graveyard at that place.

Mr. Charles btone who fives near

Thomson yesterday iu search of a
mare and the thief J in Williams,
co ored, who stole her. We have
not learned the pm thumbs of the
theft, and only know that Mr. Stone
assisted bv Mr. James Wall, of this
county, found Williams at Mr. M.
W. Curry's, near the o and camp
ground, this c uuty, and took him
aud the mare in possession. Wil
liams had cut off the mane and tail
of the mai e, but she was easily iden
