The McDuffie Journal-
J. 15. WHITE, Edjtob * Phopkibtob.
WEDNESDAY NOV. 80, HOC
Tbo promised blizzard arrived on time.
Mr. Jsspor Cobh, of Stewart connty,
wsh standing uear tlie opi ight braoes of
Id. oorn mill, oue day l*t week, when
(lie lover cams arooad, oangfit bis head
IgninKt the braces and CT'elii ll it.
Last week, in the Methodist Confer
ence in Danville, V.t., reaolntiona wore
introduced taking very strong grounds
against the running of railroad traina,
atenmlemta and atreet cnrv on Sunday,
and against Sunday news! apers. After
an aniunited discussion the resolution*
were voted down.
Two other eoiiutie* in tliia State, be
ai lea Fulton, i ‘ed hi the question of
prohibitum hint week. Stewart county
decided to try prohibition, but Hunuock
county, after u trie' of two yours, repudi
ated it by a large majority. On Monday
of (tiia week Taliaferro county, which
baa been a prohibition comity for nev
er Hi yearn, bold an election and declared
agninnt prohibition by a majority of 107.
The tide neema to Imre turned against
prohibition in nearly every direction.
In 1884 rnbbile wore first introduced
into Australia, and now they have in
creased ao rapidly that tlie Government
offers a reward of *125,000 for rny pro-
O-se to exterminate tliona. Tltoy Itavo
become a daugeroua jiest, and threaten
to destroy tlie crops and the sheep pas
tures of the entire oountry. A few yeare
ago the newspapers announced that
some idiot waa preparing to introduce
these prolific animals into Louisiana and
Texas. If he lisa done ao lie ought to
be shot. The English sparrow experi
ment ia enough for one century.
IHE ATLANTA ELECTION-
Tlio prohibition campaign, wliloli baa
kept tlio people of Atlanta in a fever of
excitement for several week* pant, wan fi
nally terminated by tlie election of Hutitr
day last. It wan the greatext, and in
some reapeota, the moat regretful polit
ical atrnggle ever witueeaod iu a southern
city, and its evil effects will be felt for
years to come. The exoitemout inoident
to the eleotion was not confined to the
city of Atlanta. The whole State and
conutry at largo "looked U|Hjn the contest
ax a momentous inane, and anxiously
awaited the result. In tlio oity aud
throughout the oonnty tlio exoitemout
rail high duriug eleotion day, and far in
to the night, but, fortunately, there was
no rioting or bloodshed. Both sides
confidently olaimed that* the victory
would aurelr be theirs, aud both were
alike surprised at the result,
Iu the prohibition election of 1886 the
oity voted wet, but the dry majorities of
the oonntry preoinote carried the elec
tion, Iu the eleotion of Saturday every
preoiuot in the oouutry, save one, mid
overy ward in tbo city gave majorities
agaiust prohibition. Following is the
official vote;
IN THU OOCNTHY,
Total vole ,2,203
Agaiust prohibition 1,251
For •• U 4
Majority against proliibition 305
in the oity.
Total vote 7,011
Against prohibition 3,329
For “ 3,112
Majority against prohibition.... 317
in the ooonty.
Total YOte 9,211
Agaiust prohibition 5.183
For •• 1,001
Total mnj'ty ag'st prohibi ion... 1,122
This was a much larger majority than
anybody roally expected, aud allowed al
most a complete revolution of sentiment
in Fulton oonnty against prohibition.
Asa oonseqnenoe, it ia Dot probable
that tlio election will be ooutested. There
were doubtless a number of illegal votes
east, but not enough by the suti-prohi
bitionists to change the result. The
proliibition leaders seem disponed to
abide the verdiot of the polls, aud rely
upou tlio pledge of tlioir victorious oppo
nents to throw all reasonable restrictions
around the liquor trnflo, and reduoe its
evils to the lowest possible minimum.
AN IMPORTANT DECISION.
Tlie ease of Hull, Hammond it 00. vs.
VTileher, appeal, from Glascock county,
wna based upou a uoto given for a com
mercial fertilizer, iu wbioh tlie defense
set up was that the fertiliser had not
been legally inspected. It appeared that
the Commissioner of Agriculture had es
tablished a rule nllowiug fertilizers to be
insjieetisl aud branded by bis agents
outside the Stale, and in bulk. In this
esse tlie iuspeotiou was made in South
Carolina.
The Supreme C-onrt rules that the of- j
floial i -spectiou of fertilizers, provided j
by the laws of this Hi de, cannot be per
formed outside the S, do. Tito Commis
sioner of Agrieuitii’u bis no p woe to
authorize extra territorial iuspeotiou, or
to dispense with iuturterritorial inspec
tion; and, without tlie latter, aui sale
of commercial fertilisers mudo within
tlie Htate is unlawful, and a ooutraot for
price trill not Ihi enforced.
Home of tlie ablest lawyers in Georgia
Were employ'd on each side of this ease,
but, of those retained by Witcher, Mr.
T. E. Watson, of Thomson, alone ap
peared in its liusi adjudication before
tlie Supreme Court; and it was npoo
bis able and exhaustive brief that tlie de
cision was baaed. This is a High com
pbuieut to Mr. Watson’s professional
skill and courage, aud ia a victory of
whiob himself and his numerous friends
may be justly proud.
