heres to the inside rurfoev and tints holds
tho points. A In.kj is left in the ■ enter of
the c) limit r for the axis. The points aro
then filed down boa to l*i of equal
length. Tlio comb Is tunrsl by a tuner,
wlio flint files the tenth, without
excewivo care, to give them tho
prqper flexibility, and tlicn files
them near tho base to lower tho tones
and near the point to sharpen tho
tones. Tlio operation of fastening tlio
cylinder and comb to tho lied plate re
quires much accuracy, so that tlio points
of the cylinder and tho comb will ex
actly moot. A woman following tho
music then licnds tlio jaunts on tlio cylin

more strength, but more especially to
make the cords drop simultaneously and
cause tlio runs or rouladts to play evenly.
Hire in music boxoa Increases both
their volumes and their richness in tone.
A cylinder ton inches long can lx> made
to i.lay six, eight, ton or twelve airs
well, hut it will play six or eight airs
bettor and with more sweetness and har
mony of sound than it can lie made to
play a greater number. Tlio reason of
this is that more points on tho cylinder
and more teeth In tho comb can ho used
for naeh air if there aro fowor airs. Tho
Space between tho tooth decreases witli
tno number of airs. If tho cylinder is
increased In diameter the airs may bo
firolonged. A music ts>x is like a watch,
t will last a lifetime if it is good to liegin
with, and is treated well and with euro.
Moat owners of music boxes object to
uelng them except for company. Tha
fact is, a music liox should lx> used every
day, just na a watch should bo wound up
every day Jewelry Nows.
ttwchary Taylor's simplicity.
President Taylor was probably the only
president to whom the j'residency was an
uncovotod and unsought for lioou. Mrs.
Taylor waa so averse to public life tliat it
■was said she prayed every night during
bis candidacy for ids defeat, and when
told of his election said: “Why could
they not let us ulone? wo are to happy
here. Why do they want to drag us to
Washington?" Who that over saw Gen.
Taylor at a levee could forget him? lie
grasped every now comer cordially by the
Land, and saluted all, high and low, old
maids, brides, young girls, all with tlio
Words: “Gladtoseo you! Glad to soo
you! How's your family? Hope the
children are all well." Ills greeting was
almost equal to Hip's toast: “Here's to
you and your family. May you live long
and proeperl" Ho hardly ever opened
his mouth without making a mistake,
and people laughed heartily. Still they
loved him, trusted his judgment, and
knew his heart, and hand were true ns
steel; and when he died tho whole na
tion was a mourner at Ids gravo.—Bon:
Perley Poore.
Chinee RuHnl OuHti'ins.
Kites to the dead make up a large jinrt
of a Chinaman's religion, in the spring
they visit tlio graveyards, carrying food
ana wine, and burn incense and utter
prayers over tlio graves. In tho autumn
tlio same ceremony is repented, only in
stead of food paper clothes anil roils of
tissue paper, representing fabrics of
linen, aiilt and cotton, as well as what ia
known as till j>ln po, or “large flat
money, “ are sutwtitutod for the food. If
wine ia offered, a j>art is poured out agd
thrown tmekwardtoward the i iglit. These
burial customs aro much the same here as
lu China—owing to the I Iliitg-mid
often consume a large part of their sav
ings. Tho people of Sinning often put a
jnek of ranis—Chinese, of course—upon
tlio coffin ns a charm against evil spirits.
No symbol of mourning is worn for those
who die in America. For the death of a
parent in Chirm they jilait a blue cord in
lire queue or wear blue shoes for a certain
period.—New York Commercial Adver

A Peculiar Wood In Nevada.
A Nevada paper descritiosn remarkable
kind of wtxid which is said to grow there.
The trw do not grow large, a tree with
a trunk about a feot in diameter Ling
much alxivo the average. When dry the
wood is nhout as hard us boxwood, and,
being of a very fine grain, might no
doubt be used for the same purposes. It
1s of a rich red color, and very heavy.
When well seasoned it would lie a fine
material for the wood carver. In tho
early days it was used for making boxes,
ft shafting, and in a few instances for
si' and dies in quart* batteries. Used
os a fuel it creates an Intense heat. It
burns w ith a blaze os long as ordinary
wood would let. and is then fu'.md, al
most unchanged in form, converted into
charcoal that lasts twice as long as ordi
nary wood. For fuel a cord of it brings
the same price as a ton of coni. Unfor
tunately, it burns out stoves foste r Hum
