The Austin Globe admits with re

compensation in the reflection that
she is the home of Tom .Ochiltre and

Georgia now has over 1,700 con

increasing. For the arrest, trial and
conviction of this army of malefac

to pay heavy bills of costs, while tho
lessees make sn average clear profit
of 9100 on each convict It ia only
a question of a very short time
when the people will pat a atop to
this one-sided business. They will
themselves take charge of the con
vict#, work them on the public roads
and reap the profits of their labor.

The following eloquent and beaa
tiful tribute to Freemasonry was de
livered by Bishop George F. Fierce
in a Masonic address in Warren ton,
on the anniveraary of St. John tbe
Baptist in June, 1865. Bishop
Fierce, like many other great and
good mianiatera of all denomina
tions, was an enthusiastic Mason,
and a man in whom there was no
deceit Uis ardent and hearty en
dorsement of the ancient Order
ought certainly to satisfy the most
skeptical, and entirely dispel that
groundless prejudice which yet un
accountably exists in the minds of
some good men:
" To the outer world I am glad to say,
Hist tbe prieiples of our Order repudiate
-very vice sod ally themselves with every
nrtae. Ass system of Benevolrnoe, the
record of Masonry is known and read of
all men. Ia society she is known ass
peace-maker, and you know who hath
said, “blessed are the pence-mr-kcra.*'
In her own family, her voice is potential
to bid the angry passions down—to
qneneb the sparks which threaten with
explosion the qniet of the neighborhood
—to stay tbe uplifted hand of violence,
end to bring Uie trauagreosor to a better
miud. She guards with watchful ten
derness and scrupulous fidelity domes
tie vtrtnc and female helplessness. Htr
signals are as potent as a magie wand,
Introducing the stronger to kind consid

the prisoner in his unngeon and the ex
ile in his loneliness. An angel of mercy
to the sick, the widowed and the orphan,
the house of tnonrniog grows bright ud
der the beneficent beam of her eye, and
drooping poverty revives at the sound of
her footsteps. Her cry of distress would
peel like the trumpet of battle or the
alarm of a fire bell npon tbe dnll ear of
midnight ainmber, and tbp Widow's Bon
can summon aid and friendship in the
midst of hostile legions, when eoarage is
no shield and power is defenceless. In
ibe world of trade a selfish, cheating
fraudulent Mason ia a speckled bird,
whose plumage tells of miaoegenstion
with fowls of snollier feather than hit
native geuna; and he ought to be, sod if
s brother eomplaius, will be, pecked and
picked till be moults and oomes forth
anew, reformed in oolor, taste sod hab
its. In aoeiety, the law of kindness
dwells upon her tongue, and her heart
pulsates with warm, generous, expansive
eharity. -Slander stands rebuked before
tier frown, and a brother’s good name is
preoions in her sight as the apple of ber
