Superior Court-
The Spring Term of McDuffie Supe
rior Court oonvened in Thomson, on
Monday last, the 17th inst.. his Honor,
Jndge H. 0. Roney, presiding.
The Grand Jnry was organized byjthe
election of John S. Watsou, Foreman,
and J. P. Lazenby, Clerk. The oharge
delivered by the Court was, as usual,
clear, strong and forcible.
In addition to the local bar the follow
ing named visiting attorneys were in at
tendance :
W. M. A M. P. Reese and F. H. Col
ley, of Washington ; Maj. J. B. Cnm
miug. W. I. Miller, Bryan Gumming,
Solicitor-General Wright, and Court
stenographer Richardson, of Angustn ;
Messrs. Davis and Cusou, of Warrenton,
Barton Smith, of Atlanta, acd Strick
land, of Athena.
The dockets were not as full as they
formerly were, showing a gratifying a--
crease of litigation. The most import
ant oases on the civil docket were the
cases of the Lamar hetra vs. Willing
ham, which were continued.
A oase on the civil docket, which has
grown to be famous, is that of Win. J.
Crawley vs. the Georgia Railroad. This
is a suit for damages for killing a pair of
mules many years ago. Including the
trial at this term, this case has boon
tried six times and six verdicts reudered.
New trials have been granted five times,
and a motion for the sixth is now pend
ing.
On the orimiual docket the oase of the
State vs. Deuuis Reese, colore,l, charg
ed with murder, attracted most interest.
But the State failed to make out a case
aud the the jury returned a verdiot of
not guilty. This result was a surprise
to the public.
There' were two other orimiunal cases
iu which the sympathies of the Court
and spectators were considerably arous
ed. Allen Sturgis, an old Negro, drawn
ont of shape by rheumatism and al
most helpless, was carried into the Court
room to answer the oharge of selling
whiskey. He acknowledged his guilt,
and plead in extenuation that he was
destitute aud unable to work. The
Court suspended judgement aud dismiaa
ed him, Vic Clark, a poor emaciated
colored woman, with a babo in her arms,
was arraigned, together with her little
son, charged with stealing provisions.
She plead guilty, and said that she and
her ohiidren were suffering for food, and
she committed the theft to feed her
hungry children. Tho case against the
little boy was ordered dismissed, and tie
fioor mother was told to go and sin no
more. But there were somu warm
hearts in the room, and when Tom Wat-
Hon called for coutributious a sum suf
ficient to relieve the necessities of the
Womau and her children was promptly
donated. The attention of our County
Commissioners is respectfully directed to
these coses.
Following are the caseß in which final
action was taken :
