Setmlor Cameron, of Tonnaylva
nil), announce* that ho is opposed to
unconditional repeal, and favors re
moving the tax from state bunks.
Not many months ago Mr Car
lisle asserted that, the act of Con
gress which practically demonetised
silver was a gross and Inexcusable
crime. We heartily concur in this
assertion.
A death in Jessup on Sunday last
from genuine yellow fever caused
much excitement. Eight other cases
have since been announced, and the
physicians ha e warned tho peoplo
that they may expect the fever to
bccomo epidemic.
The national bank association
threatens to plunge tho country into
still deeper financial distress unless
tho Senato speedily passes the re
peal measure. If there over was an
institution that richly merited an
nihilation it is the national banking
system.
Fatal accidents on railroads run
ning into and out of Chicago have
I men distressingly frequent within
the last few weeks. About one bun
died persons have been killed and
twice that many injured Tliero is
something wrong in tho management
of those roads which needs Ventila
tion.
Thiity-nino Senators favor and
thirty-six oppose unconditional re
peal. The others are doubtful. The
President’s letter to Gov. Nortlien
has intensified the opposition to re
peal, and it is now generally ad
mitted in Washington that the mens
ure, unamended, cannot puss the
Senate.
If Southern Democratic Senators
and Congressmen, who advocate un
conditional repeal, and at the same
time declare their devotion to hi
tnctulism and free coinage, ever ex
perienced the surprise caused by
the embraoe of a vet blanket, the
I’l'issidehl’t letter to; Gov/'Sorthim
must give them a rather chilly, shaky
sensation.
Without some sort of a compro
mise the Sherman act will continue
to be the law. But Mr. Cleveland
stubbornly, even defiantly, opposes
any compromise, and it now remains
to be seen whether or not tho execu
tive department of this government
of ours can control the legislative
department aud fore tho ropoal mens
ure through the Senate-
On Friday last, five negro murder
ers were hanged on tho same gal
lows Rnd at the same time at Mt.
Vernon, Montgomery county Throe
of them were tho men who assassin
ated Mr. Alex I’eterson. The rail
roads ran excursion trains for the
occasion, and an immense crowd
witnessed the execution. There
ought to ho n law forbidding public
executions of criminals.
One feature of the silver compro
mise proposed in tho Senate author
izes tho issuing of 8200,000,000 of
interest bearing lionds, for tho pur
pose of replenishing the gold res r. o
There is no necessity for this. An
issue of greenbacks, which do not
bear interest, would Borve tho same
purpose. This bond issue business
is a transparent snare, and the
Southern Democrat who walks into
it is going to have trouble in cx
plaining himself to his coustiuonU.
The New York Financier says that
the most favorable hank statement
that lias boon issued for six months
is that exhibited for the week end
ing September 3th, which is a sure
iudicatiou of returning confidence
and revival of business. And yet the
Sherman law is still in force The
people will learn after awhile that
the Sherman law haß not caused our
fiuancial troubles. It has been mude
the scape goat for a villianous con
spiracy formulated by giant monop
olies to oppress and rob the people.

ferod most, though details of tho and -1
aster in remote places have not been j
received. Enough is known, howev-1
er, to assert that this storm was far ■
worse tlinq the Atlantic coast cyclone j
of several weeks ago. Nearly two
thousand people were killed and $5 -
OtiO 000 worth of property destroyed.
More limn half of the entire popula
tion, in the region over which the
hurricane swept are dead. Not more
than one bouse in twenty ia left j
standing, and the surviving popula- j
tion are in a pitifully destitute con
dition. Most of them are without
clothing, for they were asleep when
tho wind and waves crushed their
houses upon them. It is known that
the list of dead is already far above
eighteen hundred, arid only a part of
the devasted country has been heard
from. Those who escaped give ter
rible accounts of their sufferings.
Most, of them escaped on driftwood,
rafts or logs, and were floating from
twenty to forty hours in the water,
driven by the wind which was blow
ing at the rate of one hundred and
twenty niilca an hour. More than
one hundred and fifty small vessels
aro missing and are no* doubt lost
with all on hoard. 'The entire Gulf
coast and bayous, lagoons, swamps
and streams aro strewn with wreck
age and floating dead bodies, furni
ture, dead cattle and horses Huge
tidal waves twenty feet high, driven
by tho hurricane, surged over tho
>Vo ids and farinto tho interior, car
rying death and destruction in their
wake. It is not probable that the
number of tho killed will over be
known, nor that a correct estimate of
tho property dcstroeyd can ever be
made.
Mr. Walter Rhott,, a prominent
young lawyor of Atlanta, committed
suicide in that city on Wednesday
Tho motive assigned is that his mind
was unbalanced by financial troubles.

To tiioso who enro to know wo’ wili
stato that Congress is discussing tnc
bill to ropoal the Federal election
laws, and tho Senate ia wrangling
over tho silver problem. It won’t
pay you to stop work to read either
discussion.
Just how long tho people of tho
United States will permit England
to dictate the character and quan
tity of their money and regulate the
prices of the products of their labor,
is ono of the interesting questions of
the day.
Editor T. It. Gibson, of tho Au
gusta Evening News, has a-c -ptod
a consular appointment to Beirut,
Syria, and will leavo for his post of
duty in a fow weeks The appoint
ment could not have been more do
sorvodly aud worthily bestowed;
and, to the scores of congratulations
which arc pouring in upon the
Judge, we add our own, with the as
surance that none are more hearty
and sincere.
Our worthy neighbor, the Gibson
Record, lias been considerably on
larged uiid much improved, and now
ranks among the largest and best
weeklies in the State. I'ho local
pago is a complete mirror of events
transpiring in that progressive town
and county, and the vigor aud bold
ness of tho editorials are always at
tractive. The people of that section I
should be proud of the Record, and 1
should give it a generous and en
thusiastic support. Wo heartily con
gratu'ate tho editors upon their com
meudablo enterprise, and wish them
unbounded success.
If any doubt as to the President’s
opposition to silver as a money met
al remained after bis message to
Congress, it is certainly dispelled by
his lettei to Gov. Northern He is a
strong, unyielding moninetnlist, and
be will exert all of bis influence to
force the gold standard upon the
country. Those who have advocat
ed the unconditional repeal of the
Sherman law. with the belief that,
after that act is out of tho way, a sil
ver coinage law would be enacted,
had as well abandon such a hope.
It is not probable that any act, even ,
remotely friendly to silver, could pass I
either house of Congress; and. it
such an act could be passed, the j
President would certainly veto it. I
The only hope now left to the advo
cates of silver is the defoit of un
