A Birthday Djnnrr,
Wednesday, July 4lb, waa one of the
most enjoyable days X have spent in a
long while. Mr. and Mrs, O. G. Uanter
celebrated the day at their pleasant homo
near Grovctown, witli a splendid barboue
in honor of the twenty-first birthday of
their only son, Mr. John Oaoler, who is
a trusted employe of the Georgia Rail
road, and very popular with all who
know him, tup! especially so with the
young ladit-s,
The barboouo was flue and the bash
just splendid. Mr. Hooper, of Augusta,
will testify to thin, for he kept one busy
bringing him hash, and Mr. Joe Hogan
wanted hash world without end. Blue
Bello ought to bavo keen there to see my
better half enjoy the dinner. Ho only
needed Afr. Johnson to help him.
To add to the pleasures of the day, we
had with us Mrs. N, L. Evans, of Thom
son, and a number of ladies from uear
Grovetown. I wns pleased to meet all of
them. Long may Mr. and Mrs. Gnnter
live and prosper, and may they huvo
many more such happy oooaaious.

The church is row approaching com

subscriptions or parts of subscriptions
are yet unpaid, mid we earnestly request
all who can pi ssibly do so, to help us.
Eneli one knows the amount promised to
the Denting Methodiat church, and they

THE WHITE PRIMARY-
To the People op McDoppie Cocnty :
Borne weeks ago, after repeated con
ferences among Populists and Demo
crats, the conclusion was reached that,
for the good of onr pcaple, and to har
monize elements that for years bad es
tranged neighbors, embittered families,
and that had woiked evil, and only evil
continuously arnoug the two races, a
White Primary should be called to se
lect our Representative and county offi
cers. And, in order to ascertain the
feelings and sentiments of onr people, a
petition was circulated, copies of which
went iuto all parts of the county, giving
every man who desired to do so, an op
portunity to declare himself. About
three-fourths declared in favor of the
White Primary by signing said petitions.
The call waa for June 23d, on which day
a good company of representative citi
zeua met and organized by eleoling a
campaign committee to properly arrange
for holding said White Primary on the
first day of August next,
Now, strango as it may scorn, there is
an element among ns, which includes
nearly all ootmty officers now in service,
who oppose the primary movement, with
no expressed teasou save that “they had
not been fairly treated,” while they had
the same opportunity thatothers had nnd
were urged to give the movemout their
support, They met at the Courthouse
just one week before the massmooling lo
nrrnugo for a White Primary wns to
mei t, and determined to oppose that
movement, and so declared on the streets
of Thomson the same afternoon, and
used their infinence to keep away every
man they could from the meeting that
had been called. And uow, still moro
strange to tell, these same gentlemen, in
three days thereafter, were seeking, ns
they claimed, to compromise, by having
the raassraoetirig to meet and declare off,
and then osli a mnawneeting of all the
wltito citizens to assemble two weeltß
later, and then they would agree to abide
by what that meeting might do. If this
proposition meant anything it was that'
every one of tho Qvo or six hundred
who aigued the petition, as well as every
other white voter In the county, must bo
on baud or it tumid bo no go. Hurely
that must strike all thinking men its
being exceedingly cheeky. But this is
uot all, These gentlemen now claim and
declare that they did not hold the meet
ing aforesaid ; they nil just happened
to meet at the Courthouse on that occa
sion. Will wonders never cease ?
To ouo who can calmly viow tho situ
ation and toko measurements, it sizos up
about timely : The hoys have been driv
ing tho political bund wagon now some
six or eight years, and they seem deter
mined not lo ride if they can't continue
to drive. The ouly plnoe for them now
is with tho white man's orowd or over
with the Republicans—the party that,
lias fought the South and her iuetitu
tiona for oars, and continues
to fight them. Ouu they, will they do it ?
If they do the blood of the fallen aona
of tlio South will ory out from the
ground against them,
