TIM oarlil Drill of NcDiAe Cnaaty.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 4. 1901.
The commercial failure* in the United
State* for the year 1900 were 10,690, and
the l ebilitioa were 8137,000,000.
During the year 1900, $10,000,000
were inweated in new cotton milli in
North and South Carolina.
Griffin suffered from a disastrous Are
Monday by wbiob the large warehouse,
with 800 bale* of ootton, and a number
of other boildinga were oonanmed, in
flicting a loe* of about SIOO,OOO.
The Volunteer* in the Philippine*
will be given an opportunity to reiuliet
when their term* of aerwioo expire, but
nearly all ot them hare had enough, and
are anxiona to return to home aod
friend*.
The Trnateee of the Soldier*' Home
are oillod to meet in Atlanta on Janu
ary 10th. It la announced that oonaid
•rable money mnat be expended iu re
pair* and improvement*, and that the
Home will not be opened before Maroh
let, if then.
The familial and friend* of U. S. Vol
nnteer* now in the Philippine*, will re
gret to learu that, until Congreaa ahall
•upply their place* with other troop*,
they will be retained in the service and
not brought home. Thi* will b a aid
dirappoiutment to many.
By the way, what ha* become of thoae
intellectual giant* who o strenuously
contended that the twentieth oontury
began last January? Prom the blood
thirsty vigor of their argument we oon
fldeutly expected the preeeut New Yeer
to open with a universal riot.
A Chicago statistician announce* that,
for tho laat tan ycara, an average of 10,-
000 murders have been committed iu the
United States eeoh year, being more
then 97 for eeoh day. The number
ascribed to Georgia ia 881, or more tbsu
1 for each day.
The Georgia l’satenr Institute in At
lanta discharged on the 25th inet., as
our and, Mr. S. J. Lovelace, of Mouut
vitla, tia , it* first hydrophobia patient.
Two rabbtla ware itmoouiated with serum
taken from the brain of the nog that hit
Mr. Lovelace, and, on the sixteenth day,
they died of hydrophobia.
An experiment wai tried last week the
resalt of wbleh it far-reaching. Tele
phone wires at Key West and Havana
war* connected with the Gulf Cable
wire and conversation dearly transmitted
betweeu the two points. The success of
this experiment clearly demonstrates
that the new century will witness the
marvalont aooompliehraent of humuu
conversation witli foreign oouutriea.
It has always been believed and asser
ted that a wound in the Jirart was ncoes
eaii'y fatal. But a* least one exception
to this rule ba* beeu tumid. Charles B.
Nelson, of Cadillac, Mioh., received e
pia'ol ball iu his heart in July, 1890,
where it bee remained evi r since. A
few days ego the doctors examined him
with an X-ray instruiueut and the bullet
oonld be plainly seen rising and falling
with every pulsation af the heart.
The trustees of the State Normal
Bohool at Atheua met on Friday last,
and elected a faculty with S. D. Brid
well as Preaideut. Miaa Ida Yonng, for
merly a re Mi lout of Thomson, and an ex
perienced and accomplished teacher ia a
member of the faculty. The trustees
obenged the oonrae of studies from two
to three yean, begioulng next Maroh,
whioh will make e marked improvement
in the teachers of Georgia.
The Department of Agriculture makes
the following report of. the enormous
crop in the United States in 1900: Wheat
600,000,000 bushels; Corn, 2,000,000,-
000; Oats, 1,000,000,000; Barley, 69,.
000,000; Bye, 24,000,000; Buckwheat,
10,000,000. The potatoe crop is 210,-
000,000 bushels, aud the hay crop 60,-
000,000 tout. When wo add to these
the immense number of hogs, beef cattle,
etc., annually produced, acme idea may
be formed of the almost inexhaustable
food resources of this oouutry.
Charles Johnson, a white man, of
Borne, Ga , and Eleanor Moody, a bright
mulatto woman of Atlanta, were married
by magistrate Cook of that eity last
week. When the facts became known
both parties were arrested aod carried
before Reoorder Broyles, who, after ex
amining the law, dismissed them. To
bis surprise and to the surprise of the
public generally, the Reoorder found
that the law, ts it now stands in Geor
gia, while it forbids the marriages of
whites with person* of negro blood, aud
provide* * punishment for the officer
who issues the iioeuee end the one who
performs the marriage oeremoDy, does
not prescribe any punishment fur the
partita who oootraet euoh meeoegenous
marriages. Thi* evident oversight in
framing the law will doubtless beoor
reoted by tbe next Legislature. Magis
trate C*u>k, wbo married tbe oouple, says
that be did ao not knowing that the wo
man was of negro blood.

Somo mouths ago State Entomologist
Soott destroyed a large number of fruit
trees, which had been sold in Georgia
by the Cumberland Nursery of Nashville',
Tenn., and which wire found to be in
fected with tbe San Joee aoale. Wide
publicity was given to tbia summary ac

Nuraery were shipped to Woodstock,

not be sent into this state.
Dr. David T. Day, of the U. S. Geo

ful increase of our mineral produota in
1899, says that their value was two and
a-balf times that of Great Biitain; nearly
three times that of Germany; abont
seven times that of Russia, aud nearly
