THE APPLE-TIIEE BOIiKK
A writer in the Boston Cultivator
recommends tho following course of
treatment to ward off tho attacks of
the boror: To prevent their attacks,
it is important that tho young trees
should be planted in rich soil, that ell
sprouts, suckers, and grass'should be
carefully removed and kept away
from the roots. In the next place a
composition consisting of one pint of
sulphur, one gallon of soft soap,
with tobacco water sufficient to
make it of the consistency of paint,
should be applied to the tree in May,
with a brush, so as to extond a little
below the surface, and perhaps a foot
or two above ; or take a small quantity
of ashes or sand and 6cour the bark
gently at tho surface whore the oggs
aro deposited, by clasping tho tiee
with the hand and passing it and
down, using the hand round the tree ;
this should be done once a work du
ring May and June. Either of these
remedies will effectually protect the
trees from tho borers, and tboy, or
some similar remedy, must not bo
noglcctcd, if wo expect to grow apples:
The Carelessness and inattention to
young and eveti old orchards is tho
cause of tbo prevalence of this insoct,
and so long as wo neglect using the
proper moans to prevent their rava
gos, so long they vfril! inevitably des
troy our trees. Many deftiro to raise
good fruit; they purchase and plant
choico treos, Hntl in nine cases out of
ten they think they have nothing
more to do until they pluck the ripe
golden fruit. Such persons havo yet
to learn that fruit-trees cannot now
be successfully grown iu that manner,
and unless they mean to bestow sorno
bate upon them even as mu< h as they
would bostow upon a field of corn,
thoy bad better abandon tho idea of
growing frnit altogether.
WEE DAVIE’S A BOOT.
A Scottish gentleman, more famous
in sports than- in morals, ofton Kauri
fiotd truth when bi rs ing of his hor
ses and hounds; priding himself that
“no man North of Kdinboro’ could
show tho like in a ctaaso.” When vis
itors wero gone and no bettor listener
was present ho would repeat to his
wifo the marvelous feasts of “Bonnie
Bride” as he rode her down on the
deer, cheerod on by tho pampered
hounds “Flash" and “Sly” both of
whom ho doelartd understood overy
Word he uttered to them. And these
wild boasts, ho felt necessary to senl
with a round itighlnud oath, they
wero so hard to be believed ! One
who was ignorant of the powors of
horse flosb, or who was wi>o enough
not to wound hit pride by contradic
tion, was sure to hear tales which
threw Munohuiisen ‘hr into the shade.
Now the wife of this man was a
meek, gontlo, truth-loving woman;
and as she dared to do so, she rebuked
both his lying und profanity. Ofton,
when sho could do no more, sho would
touch his shoulder and .ay, reproving
1/, to shield her boy from sin.
“Hush, dear, wee Davitt'i^Loot
It is probable that tho littttb High
lander had lio,rd tbis caution more
times than his parents were awuro of.
Ono day aftor the ladles had left the
table and tho wino fl >wvd fr ely
nmor.g the guests, his fathtr’s tongue,
stirred by' its powors, gave a fabulous
histoiy of “Boimie Bride” and her
ancestors, lie vowed that ho bought
her of a gypsy’ w ho stole her from the
Duke of L., who had purchased her
mother of an Arabian prince, and th it
lately tho thickheaded duke, seeing
and admiring her the more for her
resemblance to his lost ono, whon up
from tho midland counties of England
had offero 1 him fivo thousand pounds
for her 1 While hs ran on thus, all
unconscious of the winks und smiles
passing round ihe elide, his boy, who
had lingered in tho dining hull, stepp
ed up Softly behind! him, and laying
his liny hand on his shoulder, said,
saltly.
“Hush, faiher, wee Davie’s abool ” j
Tho roars of laughter w hich follow
ed this innocent reproof startled the
boaster so as to destroy the effects of
tho wine; and he blushed doeply as
ho saw what a fool ho liad boon ma
king of himself. This simple sentence
from lips he loved did more for him
than the kirk, the .Assembly's Cato- j
chisin, or tho pure hearttoU ’ wife had
boon able to do. There is mighty
iu words ultcied from tho in
stinct ot a child.

DWAKF PEARS.
Many pear-trees are worthless for
want of suitable attention. Unlike
any other tree, tho dwarf year de
mands a high stato of culture by hav
ing a rich, loose soil, but not supplied
with green manure. Old lime and
ashes in moderate supply are benefi
cial. If tho tree still throws out heal
thy shoots, head them in by the 20th i
of July, at loast ono-balf, und give the
tree some old manure well worked
into the soil in autumn. If it will not
produceaftersuch treatment wo should
despair of ever receiving any profit
from it. Wo have a largo, healthy
looking apple-tree that has been graf
ted noarly twenty years, yet it has
never produced half a bushel of ap
ples. Wo havo tried overy thing to
t ear, but in vain. We have not nerve
enough to cut it down, it looks so
well. We know a grape vine, a Di
ana, taken from a fruitful stock, yet
it has never produced mote than half
a dor,on clusters, tfcmgh it is a large
vine. There is sometimes something
unaccountable in tho conduct pf trees
and vines, which ho device of man
can remedy. Wo have a large and
Washington plum that lias never
borne,'which other varieties in the
same row have produced abundantly.
