Bdbinxm Cbanglc*.—The East side of the pub
lie square is about to become the business cen
tre of our town, instead of the South and We-<t
Messrs. Foreman A Cos. have bought and refitted
the building heretofore know, as the P<*s Os
fioe, on the southeast comer, and will open their
new stock of fall and winter goods there on Ist j
October. Arnold, Green A Cos will dissolve
partnership on that date, and Mr. Arnold with
Mr. James R. Dußoae, will open iu as*-or tn«-nt
of groceries and general family supplies, on th»*
East side, in the building heretofore owned and
occupied by Judge Reese as a law office, recent
ly bought by these gentlemen, and adapted to
their business
W. L Edmundson A Cos, also, we understand
Will soon remove their extensive drug establish
ment into ohe of the wooden tenement stores be
tWeen Norton's and Crenshaw's stores, and in
the same range Mr. J R Smith is about to open a
small but choice assortment of goods
Marcus A Franklin will remove to the fine
stand vacated by Foreman A Cos And alto
gether, on or about the Ist October, there will
be such a changing about, that we shall proba
bly find it necessary to issue a city directory, or
publish a guide book. We ten ierour courte>ie«
to our friends from ths country on their first visit
to town, and will show them about cheerfully,
and if any one gets lost, let him cry out, and we
will oome bo his relief. The Gazette Office wiil

owes us for subscription or advertising let him
remember that we are easy to be found and very
approachable on that subject.
Lawlessness. — H’e learn that a mixed party
of whites and blacks, all in disguise, visited Mr.
Roberts'and Mr. W. W. Hill’s plantations on
Sunday night, 6th tost., and there perpetrated
violence upon several negroes; one at least, if not
more, having been beaten and badly hurt. The
cause of this infamous assault we do not know.
That ignorant and vindictive negroes should re
sort to such a means of retaliations not surpris
ing—but it is surprising and shameful that white
men will degrade themselves to engage in such
acts. The whole white race now is banded to
gether for the preservation of Government and
Law in the South The oppressors of the South
have but one hope of victory and of the election
of Grant, and that hope is of riots, violence and
bloodshed among our people. lEhen we engage
in any form of lawlessness we hut give them the
weapon hy which all our plans and hopes may
be defeated
