SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL.
William Johnson, a wealthy fanner
of Southwold, near I'in gal, ‘Ontario,
owns a milk-white, mild-eyed steer
weighing 8,200 pounds, and standing
fully nine feet high. Mr. Johnson is
very fond of his "pet,” and rather than
part with him has refused some liberal
offers.
Water saturated with alum is recom
mended by a French scientist as a
speedy and effectual remedy for ex
tinguishing fires. His proposition is
based on the theory that the alum
would coat tlie objects wetted with it,
intercept the access of atmospheric
oxygen and thus stay combustion.
The belief is common that during a
considerable fall a person must be as
phyxiated by ttie rapid rush through
the air, which constantly acceleratesa3
the distance fallen increases; but the
weight of scientific opinion seems to
favor the view that, if asphyxia ever
results during falls, the distance fallen
must he very great.
It takes two hundred and fifty
bushels of potatoes to make a ton of
potato starch. It, manufacture, which
is very simple, is as follows; After
being thoroughly washed and freed
from dirt the |x>tatoes ara reduced to
a pulp by means of a grater. The
pulp, pla ei in a sieve, is washel by
streams cf falling water, the starch be
ing carried through the sieve into a
proper receptiicle and the fibeArashed
away as waste. The starch is carried
with the water passing through the
sieve into a stirring-tank, in which it
is washed from the finer particles of
waste, and, being heavier than water,
sinks to tho bottom. It is then fur
ther cleansed in other tanks by wash
ing and stirring, until the water is
clear and is drawn off. The starch is
then removed to a kiln, where it is
dried and rendered fit for market.
A correspondent of the London En
gineer makes a curious suggestion:
Men have not yet learned to By
through space like birds; but why
should they not take a hint from the
Engineer, and construct an aerial line
worked by elcotrhlty? Locomotives
are almost useless off the rails, and
aeronauts may lie well content if they
learn to lly along wires. The projec
tor would substitute for the unwield
ly balloon a light, stout plane, shaped
like a kite, balanced by a car, and pro
pelled by a screw, driven at a good
speed by a dozen or more Trouve ma
chines arranged in couples along the
propeller shaft. By a line of stou t tel
egraph wire led on poles from Berlin to
i’uris, or from Pekin to St. Petersburg
he would transmit a 100-horse power
along the wire by powerful dynamos
at stations, say a hundre 1 miles apart,
which would be taken to the Hying
plane by two light wires, having con
tact carriages at the lower ends. Tho
wire would have to be strong to stand
the strain of a heavy wind on the
buoyant kite, but it is much more
probable that men will learn to fly
along wires before they are able to fly
alone promiscuously through the air.
A portion of the ancient wall of
London is still to be seen in excellent
preservation near the town station of
the Metropolitan railroad.

Childhood, Manhood and Hoary Ago Ex

Conqueror.”
Daring a brief visit to the undent town of Warwick,
R. 1., recently, our agent extended his trip to tho
southeastern extremity of the town, to look abou
•mou* tbe wonderful Improvements which have been
made in the appearance of Warwick Neck during a
comparatively brief period, and while conversing on this
subject with Col. Benjamin 8. Hazard, the popular
proprietor of tbe Warwick Neck Hotel, he learned that
tbe greater part of the handsome summer residences
h*d been erected inside of a dozen years; and he also
learned that CoL Hazard had been a great sufferer from
a chronic disease of tbs kidney* tad bladder over fifteen
years, the most painful forntaf it being a stoppage or
retention of the urine, which was so very severe at times
•• to disable him for his accustomed work, and even
confine him to tbe bed, when a surgeon’* assistance
would be required to relieve hi*. He was being doc
tored a large part of the time, but oould get no perma
nent relief. At times his sufferings were terrible from
sharp, cutting paias through tbe kidneys and bladder;
and he had suffered so long and so severely that he had
become discouraged of getting well again, especially as
the doctor stated that it was doubtful if a man of his
age, with sucbssomplicstod disease of longstanding,
wmld be cured. But last summer, when he wee suffer
ing intensely from one of these attacks, a gentleman
who wae boarding at hie hotel urged and persuaded him
to try s bottle of Hunt’s Remedy, as he had known o#
some wonderful cores effected by it.
Mr. Hazard says he had no faith in it, but consented
reluctantly to try it; aud after taking it only two days
the intones pains and aches had disappeared, and he
commenced to gain strength rapidly, and in leas than a
week wae attending to his accustomed work, and ha*
never had a return of the pains. Mr. Hazard is over
seventy years of age, and on the 36th of November, 1883.
when our agent met him, although it was a very cold
and blustering day, bo was in the held with his team at
work pulling and loading turnips, ae hale and hearty a
man as yon could wish for, whereas last August he was
unable to stand up to oversee the work then going on in
this same held.
Hunt's Remedy had given. him health and strength
again, and he recommends It Cos his relatives snd friends,
several of whom are now taking it, as he considers it a
moot excellent remedy fur ail diseases of kidneys or
bladder.
