to hare figure in the difficulty. Cox
is a cousin of the Rogers and John
Rogers is a brother of Brit, with dark

Hi Thinks at (he Colored People.
Mr. Beecher has relumed to his
home in Brooklyn afleriijaiiiit of 18,-
000 miles. Hi- was mot by a number
of the members of bis congregation,
ami was warmly welcomed and coii
gratuluted 11 {toil his improved health.
In Ids conversation about bis journey
and his reception nt tin-South, ami in
expressing Ids opinion about the
South's progress, etc., lie said: ‘*l ii
all the lovvus whole I spoke there
was an under classiliut was disposed
to lj irritable, but the respectable
classes were court eons mill disposed to
listen with respect to my lectures.
My general impression in regard to
the Smith it very favorable. My own
experience has confirmed what I had
heard from otliers—that the South is
developing, and in the most hopeful
way, all round. Several gentlemen to
wham I put tho question, ‘Have tho
mischiefs of the war been substantial
ly repaired in material tilings?' re
plied llmt (lie South was as well or
lictter off to-day than before din war.
Properly had changed hands,,lad il

“In regard to the 'colored people,”
continued Mr. Becehcr. "I lldnk that
according to their light, they areen
dcavoring to do their duty. Of course
there is yot among the people of di
Sbutli a good deal of the old feeling
whieh was begot l en by slavery. They
are especially jealous of anything that
looks like an enforced social equality,
or tenileuev thereto. I found among
tho colored people no undertone of
desire to raise themselves by intellect
ual ami moral culture. In my lecture
I very freely discussed the fuiidn
mcnl’al questions U* to labor, educa
tion, the war and its results, and no
where met with a single markpfdisap
probation. Ou die contrary, there
were many marks of approval. I
did not find a single man who
did not protest that if lie hud
the power of introducing slavery
to-day he would not ilo it, I found
the feeling general among all classes of
people that the South was it vast deal
belter off to-duy without slavery than
it had been before die war with it.
