Arthur Is the next strongest man,

Mr. Jos. W. White, well knowu all
over the South, at the efficient travel
ling passenger agent of the Georgia
and South Carolina railroad*, took
abontadoaon newspaper men from
along the lino of Uto Georgia road on
a most delightful trip to Charleston
and Sullivan’s Island. AH of our
loaders know what a fine road the
Georgia rood la. The South Caroli

road bedls In magnificent order, and
Om train moves with remarkable
smoothness, making the distance or
IST miles, from Augusta to Charles

trains make close, connection and
there ia no delay in Augusta. It was
an hour later when w# got across tbs
Savannah river than whan we start
ed, although it took us less than five
minutes to cross. We simply passed
from the 90th to the 76th meridian
time; this new system is the finest
systom of lime ever conceived. Wo
coached Charleston iu time for a fine
nights rest. The Charleston hotel Is
the embodiment of the grandeur of
old style architecture. Tho front

entirely surrounded by the building,
where gram sari fountains form tha

its proportions, and cost away up

the exquisite Corinthian style, and its
interior Is truly palatial with its mar
ble floors and beautiful frescoing. It
Is near the waters of the harbor, but
its approaeb is very unprepossessing.
Tbs intention is to build granite
wharvasoaths water front.
Thera is much to interest and at
tract about Charleston. SI. Michael's
church is a grand old pile, with its
sweet sounding chime*. Every brick
inlhi* building was brought from
England. “Tho Battery,” with It*
water views on two sides and flue
park is a strikingly attractive place.
Tbc ferry boats make trips every
few hours out to Sullivan's Island.
Here Mr. J. T. Burnham ha* just

On our return heme we took an el

Great credit is due Mr. Joe W.

Mr. Ti. A. Hemphill write* this to
hi* paper, the Atlanta Constitution’
from Washington: slnp my last
visit to this charming, historic place
I find many ebrnges. I note the com -
pletion and still In progress of many
general improvements looking to the
permanent aggrandizement of the
town. The wide-awake and energetic
city fhthers have removed the olden
time Wooden pavement formely run
ning around the and are
rapldry replacing it with handsome
brick pavement. The new store
rooms' jest finished by Mr. T. Bur
well Greon, one of Washington’s most
enterprising citizens, wc found occu
pied first by Postmaster Ware, who
justly boasts that he has one of the
neatest postoffices In the state. The
other on* we fonnd occupied by Mr.
1. Av H. Harper, formerly of Coving
ton, Ga., who has fitted up one of the
tastiest retail drug stores In the stats,
conveniently irrnnged and kept
stocked with a full lino of pore, fresh
dregs, patent medicines, chemicals,
eta, carrying atto a splendid line of
stationary and fancy goods. His es
tablishment proves a valuable addi
tion to Washington. Having known
Mr. Harper intimately for many
years, I feel that Washington Is to be
congratulated that the polite and
gentlemanly proprietor of the “New
Drug Store” has located in her midst,
and I commend him as a citizen, and
competent and axpsrt druggist to his
poepto. His many friends on the
road are cordially Invited to call ou
him, when visiting Washington.
Several new residences are now com
pleted or In process of completion,
ospocially the houses of Messrs. H.
Colley and R. Toombs Du Bose. Mr.
W. W. Simpson it filling a long felt
need by the erection of ulce cottages
for renting. Mr. A. W. Dozier, form
erly of Atlanta, is now managtr of
the Arnold house, of this place. He
is oibrlng every inducement to his
many friends aud the travelling pub
lic.
Last Saturday Mr J. M. Wolf
and wito wore in Washington
and made many purchases,
while on their way home that
afternoon crossing Fishing creek the
water was so high as to wash them
some distance down the creok. Mr.
Wolf came very near losing her life.
They lost all of their packages. A
few hours afterward Mr. Lindsey
made a very narrow escape at the same
ford. He floated In hfs wagon body
a considerable distance.
Messrs. T. Burwoll Green, M. P.
Reese and Jaa. W. Jackson have re
turned from the blue grass region of
Kentucky, where they have been to
purchase seme fine stock for their
ewn use. Mr. Green brought home
three very , fine animals. Colonel
Reese’s fine marc exeites universal
comment ami praise. They also pur
chased for Mr. Henry Colley, a
splendid family horse. Wilkes conn

found In the state.

Dr. A. B. I*ope, a recent graduate
