A RUNAWAY TRAIN.
Jk Thrilling Situation Tbnt Wm Experienced
00 The Virginia Midland KsilronA
Sunder Morning.
■A,,—
Last Sunday morning about day
light a train on the Virginia Midland,
got beyond control because the air
brakes failed to work, aud dashed
with lightning speed down grade.
When it struck the bridge ever James
river, two sleeping cars containing
about forty persons fell through into
the water. The following Is an ac
count of the disaster given by a pas
senger te the Atlanta Constitution :
“1 have been in many perilous po
sitions, but I confess I was never so
thoroughly aroused as to jtemonal
danger as I was yesterday morning
whon I turned over in my berth and
found myself on a runaway train
fairly splitting the air as it dashed
down a grade wholly beyond the
control of the train man. I havo beon
on trains that made a mile a minute
and I know that tho runaway train
was fully making that speed. I could
hardly stay in my berth as tho sleeper
rocked from side to side or swung
around the sharp curves iu the road.
We wore not notified that anything
was wrong but tho wildly flying
train and the tended shrieks of the
engine as the wb®e rang out oh tW
‘‘gray dawn air me that some
thing extraordinary was tho matter.
1 afterwards learned that the air
brakes refused to work and that
the train was ou a down grade runa
way. The englnoer was calling with
frantic screcj*p for brakes, but the
train men could hardly stand 011 the
platforms, much less put ou tho
brakes. It was a wild ride, aud I
soon realized that oqr pn)y hype was
to strike an up grade. I did not
know where we were, but I knew
that unless we did get on an up grade
a frightful accident would bo our por
tion lit a moment. I think wn wore
going at that comet-like speed for
throe minutes, when suddenly there
was a jar, a crash, ami the two sloop,
ers plunged through the bridge and
fell into James river. Willi the first
shock I braced myself against the
berth, but In an Instant that was
smashed and I went out into the car.
At that Instant the car struck the wa
ter aud began filling rapidly, The
passengers were all undressed. There
wore only gentlemen in the car I oc
cupied, which was tho rear sleeper,
hut Iho slee|>cr In front had tiro ladies
iu it, llpih sleepers were In the riv
er and were sinking. Mr. Koniz, of
this city, the superintendent of the
Pulltnau car company, was in a berth
opposite mo. He sprang up as tho
crash came, and as tho car struck the
water bo raised a wiudew to jump
out, The wator was then half way to
tho top of the window, ami gushed in
in a perfect sheet. Mr. Koutz es
espod however. For my own part I
escaped through a bole In the lop of
the car, which was smashed in by
failing timber*. . Tho car filled bo
rapidly that I had to swim part ofthe
ray to the hole. All tho passengers
succeeded in escaping from the car
and wl an It settled It stood just above
tho surfif; 1 of tho water. Wo all
then shivering In our night clothes
set about getting the ladies out of
their ear. They wore scrcemlng
with fright hut I niuet confess thoy
did not do any more of it than tho
situation warranted. Wo could aeo
the situation olcarly by that time.
Only the two sieeimrs went down. Tho
•thorcars wore off tho track hut tliey
wore still on the bridge and suffered
no serious damage. Between tho
piers, however, it seemed that the bot
tom had diepi>od out whon tho sleep
ers got on and they wont down into
tho rlvor ono behind the other just as
they had stood on tho track.
“Among tho ladies in tho nearly
submerged sleeper were Mrs. l’lant,
of Macon, and her two daughters,
ono of them au invalid who has not
walked any in two years. There
wore two other ladies, ono of them
with an infaut only five wocks old.
Thoso ladies, with the car portor,
were shut off from escape ami wo did
not knew how soou the car would
sink lower and tiioy he lost. Mr.
Koutz acted with groat coolness and
good sense. Mr. W. S. Withers, the
Atlanta feumlrymau, was m the front
car, and Mr. Koutz, who was stand
ing amid the debris, called to him to
look in a forward car, ami he would
find an ax. Mr. Withers (lashed off
and found the sx. It was locked to
the wall but by main strength ho tore
it away aud seizing the bell cord fhs
tened it to tho ax anjl lowered it to
Mr. Koniz. Tho wator was then in
two feet ofthe top of the car and at
once vigorous work was begun to
cut a bole through the top. In ten
minutes the hole was cut and the la-,
dies helped mil, placed in bateaux
which the people living on tho banks
had brought aud wore safely carried
to Ihe shore. It was quite an amus
ing spectacle lo see so many undress
ed ami half-dressed jieople stalk
ing around. Mr. Koutz bareheaded
and barefooted enveloped himself in
a liiiou duster aud struck out down
the track for Lynchburg, a milo and
a half away. As the last ef tho la
dies was lifted from the hole the por
ter came up and wanted lo knew why
they had been so long cutting Mic
hole. The mau who had stung the
ax so industriously, replied: “I
didn’t make that hole for you and I’m
aaiiutl to knock you iu the head aud
throw you in Iho river.” While the
car containing the ladies was al
most submerged, ono man swam
around it a few times shouting to tho
ladies lo keep their seats that all was
well. It was then all they could do
to keep the! r heads above water. The
lady with the infant was up to her
neck in water, aud was holding her
baby above her head. She clung to
tho baby until she was safely lauded
on shore. One passenger clung lo n
car la a perfectly safe place, agd
called lustily for aid on the ground j
that lie could not swim, but he got !
no aid until the ladies were safe. An- j
other man whose shoulder w.B B dido-1
catcd had to stand in the wator up to
his neck for quite a while. The con
ductor, white standing on the plat- 1
form trying to put on brakes, went;
down and was painfully injured.
Captain Altord Tollison,ol Spartan
burg, 8. C., was an the train aud
was the first to escape, although he is
over seveuty years eld. Wo were
landed on tho shore, ladies and all,
with no clothing beyond our night
clothes, and all got into a little ninc
by-ten store, where a fire was built
up and wc were made comfortable.
Soon blankets wero secured and we
were wrapped up in them Fi
nally clothes of various sorts and si
zes were procured, and wo went into
Lynchburg in omnibuses that the
road sent out, and wo were tho most
comical looking crowd you ever saw,
I had on a pair of pantaloons that
would fit a ten year old boy and a
coat that I vainly tried to button
around my corporosity. Ratios,
bootless, and felorn wc went into
Lynchburg, whore wc were put into
tho hotels and duly cared for, leaving
thore at 4, p. m., in slightly improved
condition/ Ido not know the cause
of the aceldcnt. I understand the
bridge was condemned some time
ago, and two weeks ago a contract
for anew ono was Jet opt but po
bridge could have withstood tho ter
rible velocity of that runaway train.
It was the most wonderful escape
from death that I aver experienced.”
It is said that only one small herd
•f buffaloes remains in Texas. This
has been feeding on tho Pocos river,
in tho Slaked PU|i region, but a
band or hunters is hovsrlpg pbput it
continually, killing the animals as
fast as the moat can ho caml for, and
its days arc numbered. This Is the
rcrananl of what was known a few
years ago as "the groat Southern
herd,”
