Montreal is a c'ty of cliurohcr, and no
wowicr since it was faundod by reli
gious cnthnsias.s who sought to estab
lish a veritable •‘Kingdom of God.”
Mark Twa’n once rema-kod In a
speech at a public dimer at the
Windsor, that “he never was In a cUy
before wnere he cou’d npt th-owa
brlel -bat without breaking a cbr.-ch
window." But the m mber of .ho
churches (near'y HO) it surpassed by
(heir beauty and mag-ilflcebce. They,
as well as all the public build
ings and very many of the residences,
are built of grey stone, and are both
substantial ana tasteful. The Interior
of many of these chu-che* Is too Tlch
(or word-painting. Notre Dame de
Lonrdes, with its Virg'uo'matchless
form enthroned npon aclouvt,“clothed
with this hud, and the moon under her
ftset" (according to Revelations), and
flooded with vestal light, Is an object
of profound admiration. Mtch might
bo said of the churches, notably the
cathedral of Bt. Peter, a reproduction
of St. Peter’s at Rome; the parish
church of Notre Dame, and the An-
glican cathedral.
To one from tho States, there Is
much that Is quaint In this Cknkdlan
metropolis. The winter sporis, many
of Indian origin, as tobogganing, the
game of Lacrosae and snow*shoelng,
as well as tho old games of skating
and curling, give cheer andglkdneis
to the long, cold months. Tho shop
windows filled with Indian aud Can
adian wares, such as bows and arrows,
baskets of swcet-scenicd gtasß, tobog
gans, biroll boats, snow shoes 'and
other “curios” and “ositieß,” attract
the atlenUou of visitors. The lie
Palace, creeled every winter bn Do*

sor, with Its usual festivities,"is a
carnival of rare interest to Montreal
ers and strangers.
But I must close with the promise
of giving you another loiter on “The
Thousand Islands,” If you'think that
It will interest? your readeis.

In 1878. The writer lived In tho dis

they broke up tho convention wltliut

then mado the race, and the people

wc think it was less than one hun

how the two men aro estimated by
the people Who k.tflw them best. If

Mother’s
Friend!
A Precious Boon to Woman.
WORDS OF PRAISE.
I most earnestly entreat every female ex*
pectin;? tube confined to use Mother’d Be
lief. Coupled With this entreat* I will add
that during a long obstetrical practice ( for
ty-four years). I have never known it to
fail to produce a Eafe and quick delivery.
H. J. HOLMES, M. I>.
A lady from one of the counties of Middle
Georgia, who has been acting midwife for
many years, writes : “1 hare diapo*< and of all
the Mother’s Friend yon sent me, and I am
delighted with it. In every instance where
it has been used, its effects have been all
that 1 could ask. I consider it a great
olessmg.”
A gentleman writes : ’‘My wife used your
Mother's Friend at her fourth confinement,
and her testimony is that she passed through
it with one-balf the suffering of either of her
former and recovered from it
ie much less time. She also recommended
it to a lady friend who was about to be con
fined for the first time, and she says: ‘I have
never seen any one ; ass through this great
tcial with so little suffering.’ ”
A QUICK AyD EASY TIME.
A distinguished physician of Mississippi,
writes: “Every one expecting to he confined
should use the Mothers Friend, for during
Blong obstetric practice 1 have never known
it to fail to produce a quick and safe delivery.”
This remedy is one about which w© cannot
publish certificates, but it is a most wonder
ful liniment to b* used after the first two or
three months.
Send for ohr treatise on the Health and
Sappiness of Woman, mailed free which
gives all particulars.
