QtJANTRELL.
Some Interesting Information About the
Notorious OhtelrUla.
In talking with an old citizen some
veara ago, while at Cumberland
(whither I tarried awhile in thoae
journeying*), he had aitured me that
Quantrell, the notorious guerrilla
chieftain of Missouri, at one time
lived at Cumberland. Quantrell,
for over a year before the close#f (be
war, was repudiated by the Confed
erate Government. He then raised
the black flag and he took no prison
ers. He perpetrated the most fiendish
act In the history of the war—the
massacre at Lawrence, Kansas. On
(his occasion ha look the town by sur
prise and actually murdered every
man in the city that coold lie found.
I think the number was one hundred
and eighty. When a Southern lady
upbraided him with this act be cool
ly said “lie wanted to kill Jim Lane,
who lived there, and as be hadn’t the
honor ef his acquaintance and no
time to make nuw.acquaintances so he
killed ail the men he could catch.”
He pursued General Blunt and body
guard across the prairies for over fif
ty miles and killed ninety-two out of
one hundred and eight men at that
time. AtSedalia lie captured a train
loaded With wounded soldiers and or
dered them all to be shot which was
done, the late Jesse James taking an
active interest in the horrible afTair,
killing it issatd, with Ins own bands,
eighteen men. I met a man some
years ago in Ohio who told me pri
vately that lie belonged to Quantrell’s
gang, lie said he was a finely
formed, handsome man, with a pleas
ant, soft voice. He was, “lu truth,
a* soft a mannered man as ever cut a
throat or scuttled a ship.”
OUANTItELI. t JAIL,
I have traced this man’s history
carefully. As to the place of his birth
it it uncertain. When very young he
came to Washington county, Mary
land, and there married a lady of
excellent family and beauty. At this
time be read and studied much, ta
king a deep interest in general litera
ture, especially in poetry and novels.
Altor living happily OTer a year with
hi* wife, becoming embaraased, he
took boneflt ot the bankrupt act, waa
arrested on charge of fraudulent in
solvency and placed lo jail. His de
voted wlfo shared his confinement
during the six months in which lie
had lo remain In Jal! awaiting trial.
Upon final trial he was acquitted'.
qUANTJtBt.L’I WAMUROS.
But after this there began to appear
on the surface some of the tigerish
element which lurkcdinbia system.
Ho went to Bt. Louis, was arrested
there; his wife, still loving and cleav
ing to him, effected a compromise by
which he wa* released. Then he
went to Cincinnati, but got into
troub|l<, aud taking his wife with him
ho Here
mfc.
camo shamefully
nogleoted illness called
him back apparently to old time
kindness and tenderness; he aban
doned tho use of liquor and started
to take her back in Maryland.
mbs. qiiANTuaLi/a nivoaca.
She revived in solrit and with re
newed happiness she was looking for
the return to the home of her child
hood. But whiio on the Mississippi
river ou their way homo ho commit
ted a forgery on a Cincinnati bauk.
Ho was again put in Jail—this time
in Ci|tiu*tl, After several anxious
mouths his devoted if tfo secured his
release on ball j which he forfeited.
Ho then deserted her and she returned
home. But she soon heard of him
near liagerslon, Md„ whore be man
aged to commit anethev forgery, but
escaped conviction. Not long after
ho was eouvieted of forgery In Penn
sylvania, sentenced t* the penitentia
ry and served in that institution three
years. His wife whiio he was in the
penitentiary, at the earnest solicita
tion of her relatives and friends, pro
cured a divorce. When Quantrell
heard of it he made furious threats
against her. Upon bis release from
prison he quickly married a Philadel
phia woman, but in a few weeks was
again arrested for forgery aud waa
sentenced for some years.
QUARTRKLL'S BKVKNdI.
Mrs, Quantrell then married Mr.
Oowlon. She wa* still young, for
Quantrell had managed to commit all
these crimes in leas than twelve
years and the was married when she
was only eightoen. She took up her
rcsiileuco with her second husband in
Cumberland In 1848, and they were
both highly esteemed. On the fifth
of March, 1840, she waa sluing alone
in her sitting room In ill* hotel, of
which her husband was proprietor,
just as the evening train came in. A
servant soon afterward showed up to
her room a pleasant lookiug gentle
man who had just arrived on the
train. Astoou as with a smilo ho
dismissed the sorvant he entareil the
room and immediately locked the
door, and to her horror and despair
Mrs.Cowlop saw that it was her first
husband, Quantrell. She immedi
ately screamed aa loud as she could
for help, for there was murder In his
eve anil be told her her hour had
oeme. He caught her bv tho throat,
threw her down on tho floor, placed
his kuce on her breast and attempted
lo shoet her; providentially the pistol
missed fire. Just a* he was in the
act of drawiug a murderous knife
when screal stalwart gentlemen
broke through the door, baviug heard
her screams, rushed in. They caught
him and bound him before he could
further harm the beautifol woman
who had liceu in day* goue by au an
gel of mercy t# him.
MARRIED SIX TIMM.
He was convicted and aoutenced at
tbe next term of the court. His man
nefg and appearance were so ’pleas
ant that he captured the hearts et
the jailors and was permitted more
favors than any other; in fact, acting
a sort of assistant jailor. He was
pardoned In 1831 by the Governor
on condition that he would leave the
state and never return. Tho man I
met at Middleton,Ohio, who belonged
to Quantrell’s command, said that
Quautrel! told him'he had been mar
ried six times and “always to pretty
women of good families,” and he
laughingly added, “I believe they are
all living now.” This was in 1864.
Ho said, also treat Quantrell asked
him to guess his age, for he was still
a young-looking man, not lookiug
over thirty-five at the most, and he
said: “I never tell my age. but yon
have not come within ten years of it.”
QUANTRJCIX’S CHARACTER.
Even during the time he was com
mitting most horrible atroeities, in
hu moments of leisure he would en
joy the reading of books and maga
zines and was accustomed to borrow
such things near where ho camped, if
he dared let his presence be known.
000 l and polished as any gentleman
in the land, he was cruel, crafty atid
determined, so that though he com
manded the most desperate, dissolute
tit of outlaws ever collectedTdgeth
cr, they obeyed his slightest com
mands with promptitude. Ills only
punishment was sudden death.
“Why,” said this man who had be
longed to his gang when he spoke of
what a dangerous man Jesse James
must have been, “why, Jeseo James
was nothing to him; he would have
been Mug be among a thousand men
braver than Jessce James.”
There have been some doubts as to
when or where Quantrell was killed,
or cveu that lie is dead, but my in
formant, who bad the mean* of
knowing, rays he was killed undoubt
edly in Kentucky in 18(16. I have the
names by which he pasted at seveial
times during his career, bnt for ob
vious reasons do not care
them. One, however, hjflhrcatly

(Tram the Bbertoa. so., South.)
On the night of the 26th ult., a
man by tile name of Tom Harris, ac
companied by two negroes, came
over from (fouth Carolina and drove
up to a house In the upper portion of
this county, where his wife, Mrs.
Harris and her six little children
lived, and just after supper, whiio
Mrs. Harris was washing dishes. Har
ris, with ono of the negroes, went to
the kitchen where Mrs. Harris was—
took her by force, bareheaded ami
barefooted, and put he*- in the car
riage, which tho other negro had in
waiting, and. left in great haste for
South Carolina, The osrilggu was a
double-seated one, and and
ono of the negroes took the back scat
while the other uegro did tho driving,
which was done at the full speed of
the horsos most of tho way. Mrs.
Harris was placed ou the floor ef the
oarrlage, with her head drawn back
between (lie kueea of Harris, who
kept his hands over her mouth to
prevent her from making a noise,
while the nq'roon the seat him
held Mrs. Harris’hands in evoer to
keep her in the posilithq desired. It
is stid she begged her most
pltoously not ta smother her/ and to
lot hor get her breath, but his only
response was an oath pml command
to keep quiet, ft is the
whole country for a mfrflon each
side or the road heard the Ambling
noise of his flying team as W passed
through, *Hf4 that it wcnlßiav* ta
kou a large number of moHEto have
stopped bint In his fright. He
reached tho Savannah river and
crossed over before the people of the
neighborhood knew what was going
on, but left one of the negroes on this
side who lias been captured and
lodged iu jail in this place,
Harris took his wlfo, leaving the
little ohildren, (ono of which Is a
suckling babe) aloue In the dark*
They werb so badly frightened that
one of the largest ones took to the
woods, and had not been found at 10
o’clock, a. m* the next day, whiio the
others commenced screaming and
cryiug, which brought in some of Hie
nearest neighbors, The children
were takon iu charge by some of the
neighbors am] cared for as well as
could bo by any oue else than a
mother.
The chlldreu aay that Harris and
the devlisli negro seizod their mother,
bareheaded and car
ried her, cryiug and praying for help
to the carriage. She prayed and
begged that she might bo permitted
to get her little nine months-old babe,
but they forced her away heedless ef
her cries,
This, if we have hoen correctly in
formed. is one ot the most brutal aud
oowardly affaire that has ever oc
curred in this section, and domauds
the closest investigation and prompt
punishment.
AVe are informed that Harris is a
native ef Hart county, aud married
In the upper portion of this county;
that he lias always treated his wife
most cruelly, often whipping and
hosting per, He w* prosecuted In
Hartcqunty |stycrf#r wire whip,
ping, and through the intervention
of some friends tho court was in
duced to let him off with a light pun
ishment, after which he took his fam
ily and went to South Carolina, where
ho soon commenced his old practice
of whipping his wife, and treated her
socruolly that she took her little chil
dren some time ago and came back
on this side of the river near her
mother’s, where she was living whon
taken away. Harris, it is said, went
to the livery stable at Anderson on
Monday morning and hired the team
and carriage in which lie carried his
wife away, paving six dollars for the
same. |Jc is sa|d to be a very worth
less, bad character, and that on ac
count ofcruol I real incut, his wife has
left him several times befere.
We hope the next grand jury will
investigate the case thorou*. hly, anil
if an Indictment it found that tile vil
lain will be brought to justice.
