The English language is net studied
in France, on the assumption that the
French vernacular is destined to be

in spito of the recently published fig

French-speaking people is decliuing,
and that French is not now spoken by
more than 50,01)0,000, whereas Eng

The superstition against the num

he sat next to a cabinet minister, was
quite equal to the occasion.

The United States cemmissioner of
agriculture has presented to the Brit
ish minister at Washington, a report,
in which it is stated regarding the
butter of New York, that out of 100,-
000,000 of pounds annually sold in
New York city, between 10,000,000
and 60,000.000 pounds are bogus.
Oleomargarine has, it is said, cut
down the price of average butter 10
cents a pound, involving a loss of 1-1,-
000,000 annually to the farmers of this
country.
DISOBEDIENT CHILDREN AND
BUNAWAY OIBLS.
Gath says :I was talkiug yesterday to
a prominent man, in New York, about
the apparent disobedience and ir
reverence of American children. He
said: “A hundred different things
have affected that matter. I have
lived many years in New Mexico aud
in Spanish countries, where I went
when a hoy. Among the Spauisli rev
erence for parents has been in
wrought by a thousand years of prac
tice, untif it had got into the very
physical systom and blood of the chil
dren. I have seen men forty years
old lake their hats in their hands aud
stand up at the cutrace of their par
ents. In this country the hoys of four
vt-ars old have not that much respect.
The Spaniard at forty years of age, if
he is smoking, will take his cigar out
of Ids mouth and hold it in his hand
half concealed, when his fgther comes
in. The American boy at four years
old may offer Ins father a cigar. We
are not to consider our civilization
apart from the conditions which
bronght it about. The nation began
in a certain iusiiuordtuatiou,of which
Washington himself was the leader.
It Is useless, therefore, to measure
this race of yesterday’s formation, or
indeed, not formed yet, by the old
Gothic race which has inbred a few
ideas until they have become iustiuc
tivc."
KfSAWAY GIRLS.
On this subject I may say that the
papers are now full of tho stones of
runaway girls, some going on the
stage, some marrying the hostler,
some tired of school. This seems to
me to show that insubordination has
to the frailer sex. How
be otherwise when for thirty
years or more we have had agitations
on women’s rights? American life In
its newness has o)>eued to women
themes and apparent careers which
unsettle them very early, especially
with the miscellaneous reading which
wc now have, of which the novel and
the newspaper are greatest. Besides
our school girls pattern after their
mothers. The girl comes home from
school and her mother clothes her in
a beautiful dress and uses her lor a
companion on Chestnut street or
Broadway. The girl is admired and
the mother encourages the admira
tion. Some day they all wake up aud
'find that the girl lias been man-led
because she could not harmonize the
two sides of her life—the capitivity of
the child aud the freedom of the wo
man.
AS TO VIRTUE.
As to the degree of virtue existing
now and in former times, lam in
clined to think each time and family
arrogate too much of it to themselves.
It is another man’s home we suspect.
British civilization began with an
illegitimate son, whose mother was a
tanner's daughter; William the Bas
tard was also William the Norman
Conqueror. The present queen of
England was the last hope and re
source of the House of Brunswick ;thc
sons of George 111 had thrown their
vitality away iu early amours and
Unstresses, until the daughter of a
poor widew discovered iu Germany,
as being of a*proliflc line, held in a
child's grasp the sceptre not wielded
bra womau since Queen Antic. Both
the House of Stuart and the House
of Brunswick exhausted themselves
by political and physical disipations
until each Hue finally settled in fe
males and they of the poorest branch.
