ICEBERGS LK FBOCXSSION.
How Mountain# of loe Float oth with
the Artie Owrent
During the lest week, ear* a Bt.
John (N. F.) letter, we harewituess
ad a most unusual phenomenon at
this season of the year. Long proces
sion of iceburgs has been pasting our
shores, slowly pursuing their south
ern march on the boeom of the Arc
tic current, and we ha vs not seen the
Igsf *f these glittering wanderers of
the deep. Frequently 60 or 70 were
visible at the same time from the top
ot Signal. They are of *ll shapes and
sizes—some lofty and tnrreted, some
domathaped or fiat, some having a ae
rie* ef beautiful crags and pinnacle*.
A few were of immense size—low,
flat island of Ice. I saw one al the
eniraoce oi Conception Bay, near Bac
calien Island, which was not leas than
two miles in length. Another in the
same neighborhood was estimated to
be over three quarters of a mile. One
peculiarity of theso was that they ap
peared to follow bach other as if ar
ranged In a single line of march, but
at irregular distances. ThU U ac
counted for by the supposition that
the bulk of them are fragments of an
enormous 1 comas* which was seen on
the Labrador coast acme time ago. It
the account* of two captains who
were close to it can be relied on this
was the largest iceberg ever teen in
northern latitudes. One of the cap
tains estimated it to he fifteen mile* in
length and three or four in breadth ;
the other made it thirty mile*. Al
lowing a margin for the excited im
agination of these worthy skippers
this must have been astonishing Is
land ef ice. As it did not make its ap
pearance off our shores in Its full di
mensions the great probability is that
it grounded on some reeky ledge.
By the action of the summer son its
joints had become loosened, and by
the rising and falling tides and the
foreeef the waves, aa it hung on the
ledge great fragments were snapped
off, and failing, one by ene, with sul
len plunge into the wives, floated off
as ieebergs,th* in part
creating a ghostly proces
sion wbleh has been filing
along oar shores for the last ten days.
All of the immense group, however,
could not hare had tho same
origin. “The oldost inhabitant" doss
not remember anythiug appeaching
to tba ice phenomena ot this year. In
ordinary years a few iceberg* are
dfceu after Ang. 1.,8at now we have!
a huge fleet of them sailing past in
fte middle ef September and chilling
onr atmosphere. Since the beginning
of February a stream ef icebergs and
floes have been passing at intervals.
Soma great ice movement must have
occurred in the Arctic region of an un
usual character to cause such an ab
normal disgorgement and call into ex*
istencethe vaat ice argosies ofthe last
seven months Asa consequence, the.
supply of the next few years may be
comparatively small, and we may l
have but few of these mighty wan
derers of the deep, the Arctic ware
houses being temporarily exhausted.
DEATH AT A COTTON 01 A.
A few days ago near

man was dashed and jerked anl
Whirled, bis head and limbs beaten
